Curling's Olympic attendance

Its Olympic history dates back to 1924, but it wasn't until 1998 in Nagano that curling was given full medal status. Take a look at curling's Olympic medal winners through history.
1924 Chamonix
Until 1994, host nations would hold demonstration events at each Olympic Games. Chamonix showcased men's curling and the military patrol race (a precursor to the biathlon).
Gold: Great Britain
Silver: Sweden
Bronze: France
All games were 18 ends in length
1932 Lake Placid
The demonstration sports at this Olympics were curling, dogsled competition and three speed skating competitions for women. Gold: Canada Silver: United States Eight teams competed in a round-robin tournament four from Canada and four from the U.S. All games were 16 ends. 1988 Calgary Curling was re-admitted as a demonstration event a half-century later in Calgary for the 1988 Games. The 21,000 tickets to see the six days of the tournament were sold out long before the skiing events. Men Gold: Norway Silver: Switzerland Bronze: Canada Women Gold: Canada Silver: Sweden Bronze: Norway 1992 Albertville Curling, along with speed skiing, were the demonstration events in Albertville.

The question of how many sports are included in the Olympics is a bit tricky, because the International Olympic Committee doesn't define a sport in quite the same way that most people do. The IOC recognizes a hierarchy of sports, disciplines, and events. To the IOC, a sport is represented by a single international governing body. To look at a concrete example, most people would say that swimming, diving, synchronised swimming, and water polo are four separate sports. However, the international governing body for all three is the Federation Internationale de Natation. In Olympic terms, therefore, the sport is aquatics. Swimming, diving, synchronized swimming, and water polo are aquatics disciplines. An event, in Olympic terms, is any competition for which medals are awarded. So men's platform diving is an event, diving is the discipline, and aquatics is the sport. It should be noted that, for many sports, the sport is also the discipline. That's true, for example, of badminton, baseball, and basketball. It's not true of archery, though; the sport is archery and the discipline is target archery. Target archery happens to be the only archery discipline included in the Olympics, but the International Archery Federation also governs competition in field archery and ski archery, which are considered separate disciplines.

Lost in the mysteries of time, curling's origins are always a good subject of debate between the Scots and contintenal Europeans, all of whom claim the sport as their own. From medieval Scotland there is evidence that curling was played as early as the 16th century. Examples of the sport can also be found around the same time, in paintings like Hunters in the Snow , by Pieter Bruegel. Afterwards, curling soon caught on big throughout Europe and later was introduced to North America by Scottish immigrants. Today, Canada has more curlers than any other country. Curling was a demonstration sport in the Olympics four times (1924, 1932, 1992, 1994) before being admitted as an official Olympic sport at Nagano in 1998. In the 2006 Winter Olympic Turino games, the Italians compete in their very first Olympic curling competition at Pinerolo.

    WINTER OLYMPICS CURLING
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1924 CURLING originated in the 16th century in Scotland, where games were played during winter on frozen ponds, lochs and marshes. The earliest-known curling stones came from the Scottish regions of Stirling and Perth and date back to 1511. The earliest reports of curling came from Paisley Abbey, Scotland, in 1541. In the early days of the sport, stones were taken from river bottoms. In the 1600s, stones with handles were introduced, allowing a delivery style similar to what is used today. The key developments in the sport in the 20th century have been the standardization of the stone and the use of indoor, refrigerated ice facilities. Curling for men was included in the program in 1924, and was a demonstration sport in 1932. At the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Winter Games, it was a demonstration sport for both men and women. In 1936 and 1946, German curling (Eisschiessen) was also a demonstration sport at the Olympic Winter Games. World Championships have been held for men since 1959 and for women since 1979. Curling made its Olympic debut at the 1998 Nagano Winter Games with the men's and women's tournaments. Canada, led by skip Sandra Schmirler, won the inaugural women's gold medal, defeating Denmark 9-5 in the final. Switzerland, skipped by Patrick Huerlimann, upset Canada 9-3 to earn the men's gold medal.

—Robert Burns, "Tam Samson's Elegy" (1787) —Sir John Sinclair's Statistical Account of Scotland" (1781-1799)

Today, curling is an international Olympic sport played by more than two million people in thirty nations, but its ancestral homeland is Scotland. Curling dates back to before the 16th century, when it was first mentioned in Scottish records. In 1838, Edinburgh's Royal Caledonian Curling Club (RCCC) was established and the rules for play standardized. During the 20th century, curling increasingly became an indoor sport as ice rinks were built throughout Scotland. Curling is played on a sheet - a lane of ice 46 yards long and 14 yards wide. At each end of the sheet, a house of concentric circles is painted around a center button. The goal of the game is to slide the curling stone as close as possible to the button. A curling team consists of four players, who deliver (slide) two stones each in alternate turns with the opposing team. When all sixteen stones are delivered, it constitutes an end. Matches have 10 and sometimes 12 ends. Each stone that winds up within the house and closer to the button than the other team's stone scores a point. The team with the most points after 10 or 12 ends wins the match.
