Curling's great tradition began in 16th century Scotland. The Scots added zest to their winters with a game originally played outdoors on frozen ponds and lochs. The earliest equipment included curling stones formed by nature each one Unique. The stones often curved, or curled, as they slid across the ice, hence the name "curling". Brooms were used to clear snow from the path of the stones. Scottish immigrants brought the game with them to North America in the 18th century where it spread across the northern US and Canada. By 1855 curling clubs flourished in New York City, Detroit, Milwaukee and Portage, Wisconsin. The modern game evolved by the 20th century, with its standardized equipment and facilities and indoor, refrigerated ice. Many innovations over the years have resulted in a game of fitness, precision and finesse. During the curling season, October through March, over a million curlers take to the ice in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, most European countries and 25 of the United States. The World Curling Federation governs international competition; the United States Curling Association is a member of the WCF and the US Olympic Committee.

CURLING HISTORY Origin: Curling is believed to be a Scottish game. This is purely a winter game. However, the technological explosion that shook the world, and still at it, has made this winter sport playable not only in summer but also in tropical countries! It was recorded that as long back as in February 1541, curling teams matched their wits in a small time town in Glasgow! How it was played in ancient times? The game was played on icy surface. Standard field dimensions existed. On an icy surface you have to hurl specially designed rocks, more in the line of a bowling game where you hurl the heavy bowling ball to knock off the pins at the other end. Here there are no pins but you have to glide your rock so that it stops right at the center of the ‘circle‘ at the other end. There was no specification on the size or weight of the “boulder” as the rocks were known those days. The “boulders” used were very heavy, and, in fact a “boulder” named “The Jubilee Stone” weighed almost 59 kgs!

Shaun Botterill/Allsport HISTORY Curling, marked by a strong code of sportsmanship, developed in Scotland during the 16th century. The Scots originally used brooms to clear snow from the stones' path, and the sport took place on frozen marshes, ponds and lochs. The game's rules resembled modern day competitions. Holland's Peter Breugel paints “Hunters in the Snow” and another work depicting scenes that resemble modern curling. The game arrives in North America with participants in Canada. Scottish immigrants bring curling to the United States. The Orchard Lake Curling Club appears in Michigan. 20th Century: Curling develops in the remainder of Europe. The United States Curling Association is founded. American curler Raymond “Bud” Somerville skips the team to a bronze medal at the Albertville Olympic Games, where curling appears as a demonstration sport. Curling joins the Olympics as a medal sport at the Nagano Games. Switzerland captures the men's gold and Canada wins the women's event.

WCF History
A short history of the World Curling Federation
It is recorded that international curling events were staged in the 19th century in Europe and North America, but it was not until the first Winter Olympic Games at Chamonix in 1924 that any form of competition was identified. Great Britain defeated Sweden and France in a three-country demonstration of the sport. In 1932 at Lake Placid, curling again was listed as a demonstration sport at the Winter Olympics, and Canada was a winner over the United States in a two-country competition in which each country entered four teams. Another 25 years passed before a meeting was held in Edinburgh in 1957 to consider the formation of an international organisation which would be required in order to apply for Olympic medal status. No progress was documented, but two years later, in 1959, Scotland and Canada reached a major milestone by launching the Scotch Cup series between their national men's curling champions. Interest in other countries was generated, and the USA (1961), Sweden (1962), Norway and Switzerland (1964), France (1966) and Germany (1967) expanded the Scotch Cup entry. The 1959-67 results now are recognised in the curling history of the men's world championship.

History of Curling and Its Place in the World
Curling has come a long way from the 16th century when hardy Scots slid odd-shaped rocks called 'loafies' on the frozen lochs and marshes of Scotland. Today the game is played indoors on meticulously prepared ice with polished 42-pound granite rocks that gleam like jewels as they rumble their way down towards brightly colored houses. It became an Olympic medal sport in 1998 at the Nagano games in Japan and proved to be extremely popular at the Salt Lake City games in 2002. Curling in the United States dates back to the 1830s when Scottish soldiers and settlers brought the game to Michigan. From there it spread northward into Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and other other states in the Curling Heartland of America, where it remains popular. Today there are over 15,000 curlers and 135 clubs in the U.S., most in the north central US. but also in about 20 or states. Still more clubs are forming in the wake of the Olympic popularity. Around the world, over a million participate in the game in 35 countries, though 90% of those million curlers are in Canada, where the sport is an important part of the social and community fabric. Since many Canadians have found their way southward, a number of American clubs (especially ones outside the north central area) were started by Canadians, who continue to make major contributions to the development of the sport.

So oder so Um im Curling zu bestehen, braucht es technisches Geschick, taktisches Können
http://www.ccstoos.ch/infos/curling_historie.htm
