BaRAS Finds
The Toy Gun This is a fairly well preserved example of a copper-alloy miniature toy gun, modelled on the ‘Petronel’ matchlock musket of the late 16th to 17th centuries. Similar examples have been recovered in several counties from Essex to Glamorgan and from Yorkshire to Somerset. This seems to be the first one to be found in Bristol.
Originally a working model, the gun was cast in a two-part mould so the barrel would have been hollow. The end of the ramrod has broken off and the shaft now seals the barrel, the touchhole at the join of the butt and barrel is blocked by corrosion. The butt and barrel have ring-and-dot motifs on both sides, this is also a common feature on other toy petronels. The gun was recovered from a 17th century rubbish pit during an excavation to the rear of nos. 26-28 West Street, Old Market in July 2004.

MUSEUM International MUSEUM International N°227 Cultural Diversity and Heritage
Read this issue's content
MUSEUM International , published by UNESCO since 1948, is a major forum for the exchange of scientific and technical information on museums and cultural heritage. It is a unique space in which readers and contributors can partake of cultural diversity through heritage around the world. Now taking a fresh editorial approach, it addresses issues relating to cultural policy ethics and practice at national and international levels. It fosters exchanges of expertise in the context of interdisciplinary research (anthropology, archaeology, history and art history, sociology, philosophy, museology and economy), best practices for the safeguarding and protection of the cultural heritage, and political decision-making in a cultural environment undergoing deep-seated changes. The journal highlights the role of museums as places for reflection and production of knowledge of the heritage and culture, and provides information on debates taking place in international bodies. The experience and knowledge of all cultures are presented around selected themes, thus developing a pluralism of practices and strengthening international solidarity. It is a basic instrument of international dialogue about museum and cultural heritage. The journal is published quarterly in five languages, Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish (e-journal). Special editions in national languages are produced according to theme and distributed to academic institutions in the countries concerned.

135. National Association For Interpretation: Advancing Natural, Cultural And Heritag
NAI is a private, nonprofit, international association for professionals in natural and cultural interpretation (onsite informal education programs at parks, zoos, nature centers, historic sites, museums, and aquaria).
http://www.interpnet.com/
The National Association for Interpretation (NAI)
is a professional association dedicated to the advancement of the profession of interpretation with an emphasis on professional development and certification. The craft of interpretation is often characterized by on-site informal education programs at parks, monuments, zoos, nature centers, historic sites, museums and aquaria. Such programs and activities are often referred to as "natural interpretation", "cultural interpretation", "resource interpretation", or "heritage interpretation". Our mission is inspiring leadership and excellence to advance heritage interpretation as a profession. What Is Interpretation?
Interpretation of natural and cultural heritage is probably as old as the human species. The shaman, storytellers, and elders of tribal groups carried the oral history of their people from generation to generation. Before books and modern methods of recording stories, these oral traditions were key to the survival and evolution of heritage and cultures. In the modern context, interpretation is the term used to describe communication activities (such as environmental education) designed to improve understanding at parks, zoos, museums, nature centers, historic sites, cruise companies, tour companies and aquariums. The definition provided by the National Association for Interpretation is: "Interpretation is a communication process that forges emotional and intellectual connections between the interests of the audience and the meanings inherent in the resource."
