Our core aim is to maximise the contribution from the museums and galleries sector to our four strategic priorities (children and young people; communities; the economy; delivery), as well as to other Government Departments' priorities on education, social inclusion, regeneration and community cohesion. We aim to:
  • Broaden access for all to all museums and galleries, including through free access to our sponsored museums and galleries
  • Ensure that our sponsored museums and galleries continue to retain their reputation as world class institutions in terms of research and collections care
  • Develop and promote the educational potential of all museums and galleries, including those we do not fund directly, working in partnership with the Department for Education and Skills
  • Improve standards of training and encourage diversity in the museums workforce
  • Ensure an adequate skills supply for the museum and gallery sector
  • Promote best practice in the museum and gallery sector in all areas

Sign up for our email alert Privacy Policy FEATURE When Materials Matter "Material Matters: Three Masterful Approaches to Fiber, Wood, and Glass" is a very personal look at the work of three Bay Area artists working in the field of crafts. Karen Hampton loves stories. As a child she sat at her auntie’s knee listening to stories about Jamaica and her family long ago. Now, as an adult, she has become the storyteller. Her medium is cloth. She burns, stitches, dyes, paints, and makes photo transfers on hand-woven cloth to create unique pieces that convey the spirit of her African American roots. "I document the ‘other’ in society," she states. "The ‘other,’ the forgotten emotion of race; stories from the lives of women and children left out of the American record and consciousness. …I am their translator, their historian." Philip Agee’s furniture creations could not be more different from Hampton’s fabric pieces. Elegant, simple, linear, architectural – all these words describe the sleekly functional chairs and tables, cabinets and credenzas he creates. Agee was trained as a painter and printmaker, and printmaking’s capability of making multiples carries over into his furniture crafting."…I almost never make a single chair," he says. Agee only uses native, sustainable woods, often recycling old pieces and "giving new life to pre-used materials.’
