Our advice is to open them up, place them into your word processor, and format them in a more user friendly format. These files are GREAT for handouts in classes on the cults. Defining a Sect or Cult Defining a Cult or a Sect is often more difficult than we think. Cults have positive, neutral and negative meanings. On the other hand Sects seem to arouse less emotional response. Tracing the root origins and the different ways scholars have used the terms Sect and Cult help in understanding what is meant by them. What is a cult? Who joins them? Is it hard to get out of a cult? What's mind control?

How To Be An Evil Cultist: Recently, the Society For Evil Overlords has noticed a regrettable decline in the availability and quality of fanatical henchmen, evil priests, and willing sacrificial victims. We wish to correct this growing problem by submitting the following general guidelines for Evil Cultists.
    • 1. Pick one faith and stay with it. Dilettantism is the mark of the amateur.
    • 2. Avoid needless embarrassment. Practise the correct pronunciation of your deity's name in the privacy of your own room before chanting it in public. Flash cards are often helpful.
    • 3. Never invoke anything bigger than your head.
    • 4. Avoid all cabalistic jewelry over ten pounds in weight it attracts unwelcome attention from tourists, policemen, various supernatural creatures, and can be downright dangerous during thunderstorms.
    • 5. Citronella candles may not be used in rituals. I cannot stress this enough. Pastel-colored candles in the shape of cute animals are like beacons to the Powers of Darkness.
    • 6. Always keep your kit with you: candles, chalk, incense, silver knife, Thuggee cord, service revolver, garlic, Yellow Sign, cabfare, condoms, and change.
    • 7. NEVER be the cultist that goes to rough up the hero(es). Ransacking hotel rooms is probably safe, but going 'round to beat up the good guys is a sure route to the bottom of the Thames.

    Mormonism on the decline
August 5, 2005, 11:08 pm Originally pulished in the Salt Lake Tribune, this article has some interesting insights into the commonly helf myth about the rapid growth of the Mormon (LDS) church. Keeping members a challenge for LDS church Mormon myth: The belief that the church is the fastest-growing faith in the world doesn't hold up. The claim that Mormonism is the fastest-growing faith in the world has been repeated so routinely by sociologists, anthropologists, journalists and proud Latter-day Saints as to be perceived as unassailable fact.

Where is God? Is he/she really out there? If there really is a God why did he/she allow me to get hurt as a child? These are very common question amongst survivors of childhood sexual abuse. But why should we care? After all, Jews don't abuse their children! Or do they? Unfortunately, in the past many Jewish survivors of sexual abuse have been met with denial, rationalizations, and blame from various "trusted officials" in the Jewish community when they'd reached out for help. It's still not uncommon for a survivor to go to various rabbinical authorities with their questions; and end up feeling rejected when they disclosed their abuse histories. Time after time adults who, as children, were subjected to sexual criminal activities, were told that the mere fact that they were disclosing their victimization was considered lashon hara ('derogatory speech, that is true'). Basically meaning the fact that they were speaking out, was wrong. Statistics in the United States depict that one out of every 3-5 women and one out of 5-7men have been sexually abused by the time they reached their 18th birthday. General research about cult and cult-like groups indicate a high percentage of members who have been victims of childhood abuse. Unfortunately, at this time there is no data specifying the percentage of "Jewish cult victims" who have histories of childhood sexual abuse.

    Suggestions for General Inquirers
The cult phenomenon is a difficult area to understand. Popular press analyses tend to offer limited insights. Cultic groups often deliberately obscure their actual goals and practices. Few groups have been studied scientifically. Affected persons are often reluctant to talk about their experiences, frequently because doing so involves much pain. There is no simple, easily understood explanation for why people join and remain in seemingly destructive groups. And public misconceptions about cults and cult joining tend to invite misinterpretations of the available information. The central public misconception about the cult phenomenon is that only "sick" people from troubled families would join "weird" groups. Tragedies, such as the Heavens’ Gate or Jonestown suicides political psychotherapeutic , and even commercial , as well as religious. And few people realize that research studies indicate that several million Americans have had at least a transient involvement with a cultic group, although many, buying into common misconceptions, may not recognize the cultic nature of the involvement.

For apocalyptic cults, especially biblically based ones, the millennium is viewed as the time that will signal a major transformation for the world. Many apocalyptic cults share the belief that the battle against Satan, as prophesied in the Book of Revelation, will begin in the years surrounding the millennium and that the federal government is an arm of Satan. Therefore, the millennium will bring about a battle between cult members - religious martyrs - and the government. While predicting violence is extremely difficult and imprecise, there are certain characteristics that make some cults more prone to violence. Law enforcement officials should be aware of the following factors:

The two student cult organizations, University Bible Fellowship (UBF) and a subgroup of the Moon cult , are currently increasingly advertising on the campus of the University of Bonn, in the cafeterias and dormitories. They promise to break through the trend of isolation and loneliness among students and offer the overcoming of problems by imbedding them into their communities. The Work Group Against Destructive Cults in Bonn has organized together with the Protestant Student Church, the Catholic Student Church and the Student Services Department of the Student Union an information evening about this problem, on this Tuesday at 8pm in auditorium 8 of the university. The findings of the work group show that joining these groups means the loss of the spiritual self-determination and emotional dependence. Often joining the cults goes along with aborting university study as well.

The Truth Shall Set You Free
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32
    What is a Cult?
In order to be anything in this world there are certain criteria that must be met. A person would not call you a carpenter if they knew that you did not know the first thing about working with wood or tools. No one is going to refer to you as a rock star (unless it is a joke) if you hate rock music and simply love country. A cult is any group of people who differ substantially from the main beliefs of the group which they claim to be a part of. With this definition it should be easy to figure out that cults can come from any religion and unfortunately they do come from groups claiming to be Christian.
    What Does a Christian Believe?
Though we discuss much in Christianity and there is a lot that we belief, when you try to summarize it all, you find out that Christian belief really comes down to four essential beliefs (in no particular order). 2. Christians believe that Jesus Christ is fully God with the Father.
