This is a collection of essays about the involvement of cubism in architecture. The Interpretation of cubism. Philadelphia The Art Alliance Press, 1985
http://tiger.towson.edu/~scardi1/cubism.html
Research Focus My research for this project consists mainly of a basic history and definition of the art form known as Cubism and some of the artists involved in it. I will go into detail about the lives and work of artists such as Picasso and Braque, and a few others. I will also go off on a few tangents that I have found interesting, the involvement of music in Cubist art and Cubism's influence on Architecture.

Cubism, Stieglitz, and the Early Poetry of William Carlos Williams
    Bram Dijkstra
    Shopping Cart
Reviews Table of Contents Search within this book at Google Print Previous studies of William Carlos Williams have tended to look only for the literary echoes in his verse. According to Bram Dijkstra, the new movements in the visual arts during the 1920s affected Williams's work as much as, if not more than, the new writing of the period. Dijkstra catches the excitement of this period of revolutionary art, reveals the interactions between writers and painters, and shows in particular the specific and general impact this world had on Williams's early writings. Review: "Dijkstra has demonstrated beyond any doubt that Williams was enormously influenced by experimentation in the visual arts and that he attempted to emulate the Stieglitz group in focusing on the object itself, delineating it as precisely as possible and letting it represent the moment of perception without intruding personal comment." Comparative Literature Endorsement: "Georgia O'Keeffe's reaction when I told her in 1973 that I was starting a book on Stieglitz went from 'What for? Nobody who knew him could write about him' to 'Go ahead' because it would be fun for her to see what I had to say, and finally to her powerful instruction: 'Read Bram Dijkstra's [

Lucerne Media, 37 Ground Pine Road, Morris Plains, NJ 07950, (800) 341-2293. This new release, with its many images of paintings, traces the roots and origins of Cubism, the radical new way of painting that began in 1907 with Picasso and Braque at the helm. As a revolutionary way of seeing, it opened the door for the totally abstract paintings and sculpture that followed and thrived after World War II. Cubism's broken and rearranged images had their roots in African art and works of Paul Cezanne. Though shocking at first, Cubism's brutal power and primitive images, which were often fragmented and flattened, broke traditional rules and influenced a host of followers including Chagall, Duchamp, Feininger, Gris, Loger and Delaunay. The progression from Analytic Cubism to Synthetic Cubism is explained as well as shown in numerous images.-B.H. For information about this program, circle No. 395 on the Reader Service Card.

    Cubism
T IMELINE Picasso and Cubism An early 20th-century school of painting and sculpture in which the subject matter is portrayed by geometric forms without realistic detail, stressing abstract form at the expense of other pictorial elements largely by use of intersecting often transparent cubes and cones. Cubism, highly influential visual arts style of the 20th century that was created principally by the painters Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris between 1907 and 1914. The Cubist style emphasized the flat, two-dimensional surface of the picture plane, rejecting the traditional techniques of perspective, foreshortening, modeling, and chiaroscuro and refuting time-honoured theories of art as the imitation of nature. Cubist painters were not bound to copying form, texture, colour, and space; instead, they presented a new reality in paintings that depicted radically fragmented objects, whose several sides were seen simultaneously.

    Cubism, Camouflage, and Cultural Change
What do Picasso , a French telephone operator, and the British navy have in common? Each used cubist-painting techniques to make objects in a field of vision appear to be equal in distance with their background. In doing so, they forever changed how people perceive space and also invented camouflage in the process. While the Picasso made his breakthrough to Cubism in 1907, it wasn't until 1914 that Guirand de Scevola conceived of camouflage . Working as a telephone operator for a French artillery unit, de Scevola (a painter himself) realized that there was a way to conceal artillery guns using a net splashed with earth colors in a cubist manner . Quickly adopted by the French army, it took three more years for the British navy to devise a way of painting the sides of ships with geometric patterns to make them more difficult for German u-boat captains to judge a ship's distance and speed when looking at it through a periscope. As Stephen Kern points out in The Culture of Time and Space 1880-1918 , this example is not only intellectually interesting, but yields a deep insight into the nature of societal change "In cultural histories the causal arrow usually runs from technology to culture. In the case of cubism and camouflage, however, it went the other way, from cubist art to war technology."

Rustic Cubism: Anne Dangar and the Art Colony at Moly-Sabata , by Bruce Adams University of Chicago Press There are many fascinating historical figures in this account of a search for universal laws in art, but the main ones for our purposes are French cubist painter and theorist Albert Gleizes (1881-1953) and Australian expatriate artist Anne Dangar (1885-1951). You could say that, as in a typical cubist painting, Sydney writer Bruce Adams' very readable text fuses objects and people with their surroundings and combines in one work several views of his subject, an art colony in rural France in the 1930s and '40s. Also, in line with the hybrid nature of many cubist images, Adams' perspectives are developed from both abstract elements (of philosophy, art theory, social theory) and representational ones (personal accounts, photographs and correspondence). Where was Dangar living and how did she eventually come to have a street named after her in that out-of-the-way place? Why is her memory cherished; why is her functional earthenware held in major French collections?

A Simple Explanation Of Fractal Geometry
While the classical Euclidean geometry works with objects which exist in integer dimensions, fractal geometry deals with objects in non-integer dimensions. Euclidean geometry is a description lines, ellipses, circles, etc. Fractal geometry, however, is described in algorithims a set of instructions on how to create a fractal.
The world as we know it is made up of objects which exist in integer dimensions, single dimensional points, one dimensional lines and curves, two dimension plane figures like circles and squares, and three dimensional solid objects such as spheres and cubes. However, many things in nature are described better with dimension being part of the way between two whole numbers. While a straight line has a dimension of exactly one, a fractal curve will have a dimension between one and two, depending on how much space it takes up as it curves and twists. The more a fractal fills up a plane, the closer it approaches two dimensions. In the same manner of thinking, a wavy fractal scene will cover a dimension somewhere between two and three. Hence, a fractal landscape which consists of a hill covered with tiny bumps would be closer to two dimensions, while a landscape composed of a rough surface with many average sized hills would be much closer to the third dimension.
