Castro: Election reaffirms Cuban system
Castro votes Sunday January 11, 1998 Web posted at: 9:33 p.m. EST (0233 GMT) HAVANA (CNN) In a ballot hailed by President Fidel Castro as a reaffirmation of Cuba's communist system, voters went to the polls Sunday to choose members of national and provincial assemblies. "It's the world that's changing, not Cuba," said Castro, after casting his vote in El Cobre, in the island's eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, where he was standing for election. "On the contrary, (Cuba) is reaffirming its position, its ideals, its objectives." The results of the election, expected to be announced Monday, are not in doubt. While not all of the candidates were members of the Communist Party, all support the government's policies and there were no known opponents to Castro on the candidates' lists voters were asked to endorse. But worried about possible voter apathy, the government had staged an extensive campaign to ensure a big turnout. Party officials and members of neighborhood committees made house-to-house calls to persuade people to vote. The campaign apparently worked, as election officials said at least 7.6 million of the island's 7.8 million eligible voters took part in the elections.

The Cuban Spy Page
Introduction
Cuba, unlike Israel, is a hostile nation. It is considered in the same category of hostile nations as Libya, and Iraq. In spite of the status of Cuba as a hostile nation and in spite of the enormity of the crimes committed by the Cuban spies - including the murder of American civilians - the sentences currently being meted out to the Cuban spies are shockingly light. For example, Alejandro Alonso, one of the Cuban spies, was recently sentenced to only 7 years. Compare and contrast this to the life sentence without parole that Jonathan Pollard received for espionage on behalf of Israel - America's strong friend and close ally. To better understand the seriousness of the Cuban Spy case, the following excerpt from the Congressional Record is an excellent primer. The speaker is Senator Jesse Helms:
Clinton Administration Must Respond Forcefully To Cuban Espionage

Cuban political prisoners leaving for exile in Canada
The Canadian Embassy in Havana In this story: April 6, 1998 Web posted at: 9:19 p.m. EDT (0119 GMT) HAVANA (CNN) Cuban political prisoners whose release was sought by Pope John Paul II were to be freed Monday night and flown to exile in Canada. Although Canadian immigration officials and a Cuban human rights group differed on the number being released the Canadians said 11, the Cuban group said six they were to fly late Monday night from Havana to Toronto. Canadian officials said more prisoners were to be released later. "What we have today is the departure of the first group ... which is going to travel to Canada," said Elizardo Sanchez , head of the Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation. The Canadian government originally announced it would accept 19 Cuban "prisoners of conscience" who would be freed by the Cuban government on the condition that they leave the communist-ruled island. But Sanchez said the Canadian authorities have since rejected five of the 19 because of the violent nature of their offenses, including hijacking and unspecified terrorism charges.
