The Cuban Flag
The colors represented the aspiration for freedom that all men share: red, white and blue. Three blue stripes represent the states into which the island was divided at that time; two white stripes imply the force and dedication of the idealistic soldier for independence; a red triangle for equality, fraternity and liberty, and the blood shed in the pursuit of freedom; a white five-sided star, inside the red triangle, as a symbol of freedom between nations. The flag is twice as long as it is wide. Related

The Cuban Missile Crisis, October 18-29, 1962
Listening to these audio files requires installation of the free RealAudio Player. It is available from RealAudio. Please note: The source tapes for these audio materials are poor, requiring higher quality streaming at a minimum modem speed of 28.8 kbps. Macs with 040 processors will not be able to stream these materials.
In October 1996, The John F. Kennedy Library released a set of tape recordings documenting the crisis for the period October 18 to 29, 1963. These recordings were made in the Oval Office. They include President Kennedy's personal recollections of discussions, conversations with his advisors, meetings with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and members of the president's executive committee. We are releasing four tapes in this series now. Others will follow. The tapes are unedited and represent digital copies of the materials distributed by the Library. The recordings were made using early technology (Dictabelt and similar devices). Microphones and placement also add noise and distortion. In short, these recordings will prove challenging to some listeners. At first, the voices may sound like honking geese. But if you persevere, you will become a first-hand observer to one of the most important events of the cold war.

An educational site dedicated to the cuban tres. Includes history, players, recordings, and description of the instrument.

Welcome to CubanTres.com
The Cuban Tres
The Cuban Tres is a guitar-like instrument with three double strings (six strings in all). It played a key role in the Cuban "Son" musical style and continues to play a part in many Afro-Cuban inspired bands. It is sometime referred to as "Cuban Tres Guitar", "Tres Cubano" or "Tres Guitar". Some instruments from Puerto Rico have three triple strings (nine strings in all).
CubanTres.com is an educational site dedicated to the instrument and its music. It will offer profiles/interviews of contemporary New York and Cuban Tres players.
Note: In the above photograph Mario Hernandez is playing a Puerto-Rican style Tres. One of the most common forms of the Tres is a retrofitted guitar, i.e. a typical acoustic guitar strung with different gauge strings and tuned like a Tres (g-c-e)- See picture below. The Cuban Tres is sometimes referred to as the "Tres Guitar".

A Marxist analysis of Fidel Castro and Castroism, written by Albert Weisbord.
http://www.weisbord.org/Castroism.htm
CASTROISM - DEADLY DANGER TO THE CUBAN REVOLUTION
By Albert Weisbord
(From the magazine "La Parola del Popolo" December 1962) IN TWO relatively recent articles La Parola del Popolo has pointed out certain dangerous tendencies existing in the adoption of Castroism by the Cuban Revolution. In the June-July 1961 issue in dealing with Castro's ransom proposals we wrote: "Castro may be denounced as a communist stooge, but he can never be acclaimed as a Marxist. He is a mere Jacobin, a man who has attached himself to the people from the top and who essentially looks at them from the mountain peak of his intellectual contempt and Spanish pride as a rabble without great brains or historic initiative." The article concluded: "Let the Cuban revolutionary workers and peasants learn the bitter lessons from this episode. Let them put a bridle on Castro and force him to act not like a catholic savior but like a modest leader of the working class training and developing them for leadership and decision making in a Marxist manner." We followed this up with a longer article entitled "Perspective of the Cuban Revolution" appearing in the December-January 1962 issue: ". . . . it is absolutely essential to raise the question of general elections in which the workers and toilers will be entirely free to vote to make their choices and to participate actively in all government and political activities.

United Nations: Cuban Missile Crisis Debate, 1962
Between Adlai Stevenson and V. A. Zorin in the United Nations Security Council, October 23, 1962 Mr. STEVENSON (United States of America): I have asked for an emergency meeting of the Security Council to bring to your attention a grave threat to the Western Hemisphere and to the peace of the world. Last night, the President of the United States reported the recent alarming military developments in Cuba. . . . In view of this transformation of Cuba into a base for offensive weapons of sudden mass destruction, the President announced the initiation of a strict quarantine on all offensive military weapons under shipment to Cuba. He did so because, in the view of my Government, the recent developments in Cuba - the importation of the cold war into the heart of the Americas - constitute a threat to the peace of this hemisphere, and, indeed, to the peace of the world. The time has come for this Council to decide whether to make a serious attempt to bring peace to the world-or to let the United Nations stand idly by while the vast plan of piecemeal aggression unfolds, conducted in the hope that no single issue will seem consequential enough to mobilize the resistance of the free peoples. For my own Government, this question is not in doubt. We remain committed to the principles of the United Nations, and we intend to defend them. . . .

Produced with unprecedented access to Cuban national archives, this book assembles nearly 150 of these powerful but little-seen works of popular art. From the 1960s through the 1980s, the posters rallied the Cuban people to the huge task of building a new society, promoted massive sugar harvests and national literacy campaigns; opposed the U.S. war in Vietnam; and celebrated films, music, dance, and baseball with a unique graphic wit and exuberant colorful style. Includes an introduction illuminating the rich social and artistic history of the posters and biographical information on the artists themselves.
"Does for the golden age of Cuban poster art what Ry Cooder and Wim Wenders' Buena Vista Social Club did for the country's aged and neglected musicians."

    QUOTE OF THE DAY
