Cuban History
History Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Cuba on October 28, 1492, during his initial westward voyage. In honour of the daughter of Ferdinand V and Isabella I of Spain, his benefactors, Columbus named it Juana, the first of several names he successively applied to the island. It eventually became known as Cuba, from its aboriginal name, Cubanascnan. Colonization by Spain When Columbus first landed on Cuba it was inhabited by the Ciboney, a friendly tribe related to the Arawak. Colonization of the island began in 1511, when the Spanish soldier Diego Velazquez established the town of Baracoa. Velázquez subsequently founded several other settlements, including Santiago de Cuba (1514) and Havana (1515). The Spanish transformed Cuba into a supply base for their expeditions to Mexico and Florida. As a result of savage treatment and exploitation, the aborigines became, by the middle of the 16th century, nearly extinct, forcing the colonists to depend on imported black slaves for the operation of the mines and plantations. Despite frequent raids by buccaneers and naval units of rival and enemy powers, the island prospered throughout the 16th and 17th centuries. Restrictions imposed by the Spanish authorities on commercial activities were generally disregarded by the colonists, who resorted to illicit trade with privateers and neighbouring colonies. Following the conclusion in 1763 of the Seven Years' War, during which the English captured Havana, the Spanish government liberalized its Cuban policy, encouraging colonization, expansion of commerce, and development of agriculture. Between 1774 and 1817 the population increased from about 161,000 to more than 550,000. The remaining restrictions on trade were officially eliminated in 1818, further promoting material and cultural advancement.

Term Paper #26585 Add to Cart (You can always remove it later) The Analysis of History
Examines quotations by historian Thomas Carlyle and philosopher Karl Marx regarding history and the study of history. 1,423 words ( approx. 5.7 pages ), 4 sources, MLA, Click here to show/hide Paper Summary
Abstract
Historians approach the subject of history from different perspectives and interpret their findings according to underlying beliefs, attitudes, methodologies and even ideologies. Whatever method is used is usually found to be adequate and most correct by the person using it, but not all methods are equal. This paper examines two quotations regarding history and the study of history to show different views of what history is and how it is to be analyzed - "The history of the world is but the biography of great men" (Scottish historian, Thomas Carlyle) and "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggle" (German political philosopher, Karl Marx).
From the Paper:
"The kind of history envisioned by Carlyle would focus on individual leaders and their exploits as the subject matter of history and would define how history is studied. The lives of great men would be examined in detail, and the events of their lives would be attributed to their actions as warriors, statesmen, political leaders, and so on. History is organized around this idea when we talk of different regimes, as when we order British history according to the succession of kings and speak of different eras as Elizabethan, Victorian, Edwardian, and so on."

Presenting cuban history through the Spanish, African and American jazz influences on its dance and music
http://www.genting.com.my/en/live_ent/2003/ladysalsa/preview.htm
Accessible using Windows Media Player PREVIEW " Lady Salsa " is sexy, energetic and good fun! Presenting Cuban history through the Spanish, African and American jazz influences on its dance and music, " Lady Salsa's " main contribution is an innocence that makes the show fresh and endearing. Not to be left out is the strong musical side, with a 10-piece band led by a handsomely bespectacled singer who wins hearts in every direction, as well as firing up the exuberant melodies. Trinidad Rolando, the " Lady Salsa " of the title, is a cigar-smoking septuagenarian of immense charm. Some of her story is wound into the action, particularly her joy in the social changes of Fidel Castro's revolution, but essentially she is a pivotal figure for the high-energy action of eight dancing couples. They hardly draw breath as one sequence follows another, each demanding a change of vibrant, close-fitting costume that makes the most of dancers' attractive physicality. The high-stepping girls and loose-limbed men don't have much in the way of interesting or varied choreography in movement that is based on social dances such as the rumba, mambo, cha-cha, macarena and salsa.

HAVANA - The American group Audioslave broke decades-long barriers with a thundering concert before thousands of Cuban fans — who knocked over barriers to get closer to the first U.S. rock band to play an outdoor concert in Cuba.
Chris Cornell's scream — "I won't do what you tell me!" — boomed off the high-rise apartment buildings on the south side of the stage Friday night as feedback shrieks from Tom Morello's guitar drifted into the night breeze.
"This is the best thing that has happened here this year," said 25-year-old rock fan Omar Juanes.
It was a distinct difference from the orderly, clean-cut crowds who march in massive anti-U.S. protests along the Malecon waterfront at the same venue: the Jose Marti Anti-Imperialist Tribunal before the U.S. Interests Section, or diplomatic mission.
Even before the concert, hundreds of fans were so eager that they sent metal security barricades clanging to the pavement and rushed forward to fill a 50-yard-long area that had been reserved for special guests.
Police allowed the fans to stay in the invaded space, and several joked with tattooed youths in Metallica T-shirts swigging rum.

ChickenBones: A Journal Home The Quest for the Cuban Christ: A Historical Search By Miguel A. De La Torre "A sweeping and stunning interpretation of Cuban religion and culture, from the religious fervor that surrounded the recent Elian Gonzalez saga in M iam i to a religious view from the underside of Cuban history." Luis Daniel Leon, Arizona State University "A f ascinating [and] controversial interpretation of Cuban history and religions that should be read by anyone interested in understanding North American Latino religions and culture." Gaston Espinosa, University of California, Santa Barbara In The Quest for the Cuban Christ , Miguel A. De La Torre examines symbols enriching the Cuban experience through a highly creative historical and cultural framework. he argues that for all Cubans, Christ must be understood through the historical analysis of the Cuban culture and that God saves Cubans in a quintessentially Cuban way. De La Torre juxtaposes two disciplines long considered mutually exclusiveliberation theology and postmodernityto test the relationship between the faith of marginalized Cuban groups and the overall Cuban identity. His approach challenges the Latino academic religious community to consider seriously and acknowledge how vastly the Cuban religious experience differs from that of other traditions. he also confronts the proposition that Christ can be understood through a general Latino social location.
