A brief history
of Cuba
Originally inhabited by Ciboney and Arawak Indians, Cuba was colonised by the Spanish following the arrival of Columbus in 1492. In the 1600s European powers struggled to control the country. After two wars of independence the Cubans won their freedom from the Spanish in 1899, only to be ruled for another 60 years by governments in the hand or pocket of the U.S.A. Independence from the US domination was finally won in the late fifties after more than two years of fighting between the Batista regime and revolutionary forces led by Fidel Castro, Che Guevara and others. US hostility to the new order culminated with the implementation of an economic embargo. This left Cuba getting all its support from the Soviet bloc, and by the mid sixties communism was taken on as the official ideology. With this political concordance came also the reliance on Soviet technical support and guidance. By the mid eighties criticism of the way the Revolution was developing reached a level that the government declared the need for an Era of Rectification. This involved a number of measures designed to answer popular discontent, and to assert a more indigenous path of development. Bureaucracy was cut back, a new elected local government structure was created. Surplus labour was directed into the construction of new housing, hospitals and schools. Some state farms were broken up into a number of workers co-operatives. In 1965 Che had left Cuba, critical of the island's wholesale adoption of Soviet influences. After 20 years his perceptions made sense to sufficient Cubans and a reaction took place.

Must-Sees for Cuban History and Culture
By Chelle Koster Walton, Member of the Society of American Travel Writers
Way before the sensationalized Mariel boatlift made "Cuban" synonymous with Miami, the Spanish Caribbean island and Florida had sealed a bond. By dint of close proximity, trade between the two was happening well before Europeans arrived. Later, Florida fishermen swapped smoked fish for rum during Prohibition days and when trouble struck in 1868, Cubans grabbed their tobacco seeds and headed to Key West, 90 miles away. In 1886, Vicente Martinez Ybor moved his cigar-making operation to Ybor City in Tampa, attracted by better trade deals and transportation. Today the Cuban influence has added spice and spark to cuisine, arts and

customs throughout the state. Here are some great places to trace this strong infulence on Florida culture.

Brendan Rivage-Seul Conducts Intense Study of Cuban History
Trip to Cuba preceded research experience with Richard Sharpless , professor of history.
EASTON, Pa.( www.lafayette.edu ), December 13, 2002 — Sophomore Brendan Rivage-Seul (Berea, Ky.) immersed himself in the rich history of Cuba this semester.
He worked on the project with Richard Sharpless , professor of history. Sharpless is coauthor of The Kingdom of Coal: Work, Enterprise, and Ethnic Communities in the Mine Fields
"Brendan became interested in Cuban history after a trip he took. He also comes from a liberal progressive background, so he wanted to pursue this topic," says Sharpless.
"I went to Cuba to take part in the 20th annual meeting of 'Philosophers and Social Scientists' for a three-week study," says Rivage-Seul. "My parents originally got me interested in it; they have both been to Cuba numerous times."
During his trip, Rivage-Seul visited much of the island, including Santa Clara, Santiago, Guanabacoa, Varadero, and Havana.
"In our studies at various universities and Cuban think tanks, we were exposed to historical, economic, political, racial, and gender issues concerning Cuba. We had a great time, not just studying, but also enjoying the culture. It was a time to brush up on some Spanish, meet very interesting people, and learn about a culture that would have otherwise remained rather foreign to me, as it is to most Americans," he says.

English professors Cecilia Rodríguez Milanés and Ivonne Lamazares will join Luis Martínez-Fernández, director of the Latin American, Caribbean and Latino Studies program, at the celebration from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Orange County Regional History Center, 65 E. Central Blvd., Orlando. Milanés, co-chair of the Latino Caucus of The National Council of Teachers of English will read her poetry, and Lamazares will read excerpts of her book, "The Sugar Island." Martínez-Fernández, who was born in Havana, will discuss how Cuba's geography has shaped its political history. He will examine issues such as why Cuba became a sugar island, why it developed a love-hate relationship with the United States and why Cuba's eastern and western areas evolved differently. Martínez-Fernández is the senior editor of the "Encyclopedia of Cuba: People, History and Culture."

http://www.cubasocialista.com/history.htm
A century to be remembered: a synopsis of Cuban History THE 19th century ended badly for Cubans. In 1898, the United States’ opportunistic intervention in the war against Spanish colonial rule, which Cuban patriots were on the verge of winning, frustrated hopes for sovereignty and independence. In terms of time, more than 100 years have passed since then; but in terms of history, much more took place in this Caribbean island than in the 19 previous centuries. FROM SPANISH COLONY TO U.S. NEOCOLONY Tomás Estrada Palma's assumption of power on May 20, 1902, with the consent of the U.S. military governor, Leonard Wood, who ran the electoral process, signaled the start of the neocolonial republic in Cuba. With the dissolution of the Cuban Revolutionary Party on December 30, 1898, two days before the official start of the U.S. military occupation, the delegate Tomás Estrada Palma, successor to José Martí in the post, delivered a mortal blow to the yet to be born republic. Cuba was already in crisis at this point, mainly due to Spanish colonialism, but also because of the U.S. military occupation and its consequences of hunger, poverty and unemployment. The fragmentation of the national revolutionary political organization and ideological confusion, with evident distortions in the revolutionary and anti-imperialist thinking of José Martí, exacerbated the situation.
