Introduction [Top of Page] Background: Fidel CASTRO led a rebel army to victory in 1959; his iron will has held the country together since. Cuba's communist revolution, with Soviet support, was exported throughout Latin America and Africa during the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. The country is now slowly recovering from a severe economic recession following the withdrawal of former Soviet subsidies, worth $4 billion to $6 billion annually, in 1990. Havana blames its difficulties on the US embargo in place since 1962. The island is situtated 180 km south of Florida, 140 km north of Jamaica, and 210 east of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and 77 km west of Haiti. The island extends 1250 km east to west and is between 31 and 191 km wide. It includes four groups of islands: Los Colorados, Sabana-Camaguey, Jardins de la Reina and Los Canarreos. Alexander von Humboldt compared the form of the island to a crocodile and the Cuban national poet, Nicolas Guillen, described the island in one of his poems as a long, green lizard. landscape A quarter of the country is mountainous and the highest mountain chain, the Sierra Maestra, reaches an altitude of almost 2000 meters at the Pico Turquino, the highest peak in Cuba. The mountain areas are very important for the Cuban economy, because coffee or tobacco is usually cultivated at moderate altitudes, while the higher areas are used to mine heavy metals. More than 200 rivers, of which none is longer than 250 km, irrigate the land, turning it into a green paradise.

GEOGRAPHY Cuba is the largest, most varied and most beautiful of the Greater Antilles islands. It is long and narrow, extending approximately 1,260 km east-west in length; its width ranges from 193 km to 32 km. No point in the Island is more than 80 km from the sea. Cuba's territory, or the Cuban Archipelago, includes the Island of Youth (Isla de la Juventud) and several coastal islets and cays; it covers a land area of 110,861 km2. Cuba, often called the "Pearl of the Antilles," has a subtropical trade wind climate, adequate rainfall, significant mineral resources, and vast areas of level fertile land suitable for mechanized farming. To the south of Matanzas is Cienaga de Zapata, known for its marshy lowlands where crocodiles are commercially raised. Also in this province is Varadero, known for its beaches of fine white sand, clear and transparent waters and comfortable resorts. Santiago de Cuba, also rich in tradition and architectural treasures, is located on the south coast at the island's eastern end. The rugged topography of the Sierra Maestra, with elevations of up to 1,980 m above sea level, is unique in the island and famous for its sceneries of breath-taking beauty and unbelievable variety. Cuba's rivers are not commercially significant. The Cauto River, draining the southeastern mountains, is the longest (roughly 240 km), but is navigable for only 75 km by small boats. About 80 percent of Cuba's soil is derived from the action of rainfall on limestone, producing deep, fertile, often bright-red soil.

Son del Son C oncerning popular music, leyends are useful. They have something missing in academic studies and in scienlitic analysis: clarity and synthesis. Cuban son leyends began in the intricate zones of East Province's mountains, by the middle of XIX century; but its origin and first steps are not clear. Old son musicians assured that son was a simple repetition of short refrains with inserted phrases called "inspirations'"; in othur cases, four, six or more graciously neglectcd rhymed verses. The old fashioned son music orchestra had a tres guitar and a percussion instrument such as the tumbadera and bongó. Valera Miranda family sang, in many stages all over Ihe world, some of the primitive songs like " ', considered one of the oldest songs. It is an endless "montuno son" that can be as long as eternity, just like Oramas Faustino's son "El Guayabero"; his scamped cuartets in repetition spaces like the most known and unalterable refrains: "A mí me gusta que baile Mariela" or "Cuidado con el perro que muerde callado".

by Alex Tiffany I. INTRODUCTION Cuba, largest and most western island of the West Indies. It forms, with various adjacent islands, the Republic of Cuba. Cuba occupies a central location between North and South America and lies on the lanes of sea travel to all countries bounded by the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. For most of its history, Cuba's fertile soil and abundant sugar and tobacco production made it the wealthiest island of the Caribbean. The Republic of Cuba is an archipelago, or group of islands. The main island of Cuba covers 105,006 sq km (40,543 sq mi). It is 1,199 km (745 mi) long and 200 km (124 mi) across its widest and 35 km (22 mi) across its narrowest points. The next largest island, Isla de la Juventud, or the Isle of Youth (formerly known as the Isle of Pines), off Cuba's southwest shore, covers 3,056 sq km (1,180 sq mi). Four sets of smaller archipelagosÑthe Sabana, the Colorados, the Jardines de la Reina, and the Canarreos archipelagosÑand numerous other islands are part of the Cuban nation. Havana is the capital city with a population of 2,184,990 in 1996. In 2001 the nation's population was estimated to be 11,184,023. Cuba's proximity to Haiti, the United States, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, and Jamaica has allowed people to migrate easily onto and off of the island. This movement contributed to the rich mixture of people and customs in Cuba and throughout the Caribbean area. Although agriculturally rich, Cuba exports only a few products, such as sugar, tobacco, citrus fruits, and several manufactured products.

CLIMATE
Cuba has a tropical trade-wind climate moderated by the surrounding waters. The moist northeast trade winds reach most of the island except the deep isolated valleys and parts of the southeast coast, making the summers bearable and the winters usually warm and pleasant. The temperature decreases slightly with elevation and exposure to open waters, but the mean annual temperature at Havana is 25o C.
