The Rehabilitation Provider's Guide to Cultures of the Foreign-Born
The Center for International Rehabilitation Research Information Exchange (CIRRIE) is supported by a grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to the State University of New York at Buffalo. The mission of CIRRIE, a Knowledge Dissemination and Utilization project, is to facilitate the sharing of information and expertise in rehabilitation research between the United States and other countries. As a part of this mission, CIRRIE has developed a series of monographs that are designed to disseminate useful information to rehabilitation service providers. These monographs address cultural issues of individuals who are foreign-born, especially those who may be recent immigrants, and who may have approached a rehabilitation agency for services or be in the process of receiving services. Issues raised in the monographs suggest areas that may be significant in achieving a successful rehabilitation outcome. The monograph series is called: The Rehabilitation Provider's Guide to Cultures of the Foreign-Born. Cultures selected for a monograph represent the top eleven countries of origin of the foreign-born population in the United States. Currently, a monograph is available for: China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, India, Jamaica, Korea, Mexico, and the Philippines. Monographs are currently in development for Vietnam and Haiti. For all currently available monographs see:

"Tourist Scenarios in a Changing Cuba"
Given that the average Cuban salary is between $10-$15 a month even a small sum from a tourist who paid $100 a night for a hotel would be substantial. Jealousies and anger flared up around this, and it was apparent in the small community where I stayed. And though given my location in Havana I could not compare this to the countryside, it was clear that people who lived in Havana had a greater likelihood of meeting foreigners than someone in the rural areas. This disparity had both negative and positive aspects for both the urban and rural settings. The contradictions of state-capitalism are numerous, especially in Cuba where the central commodity is tourism. These contradictions are felt in many intersecting and subtle ways by Cuban people. For the final part of my project, I will address the larger ramifications of capitalist transformation within a socialist society.

SOCIOLOGY: THE CARIBBEAN AND THE GUIANAS
BENIGNO E. AGUIRRE-LOPEZ
REFLECTING THE TREND FOR LATIN AMERICA as a whole, the literature on the Caribbean region is dominated by the study of rapid social change processes such as the Cuban Revolution, activities of social movement organizations, and instances of collective behavior, especially mass migrations. Recent UN-sponsored research on refugees and displaced women is particularly noteworthy (item bi 94000458), as is research documenting the declining quality of life in Puerto Rico (item bi 94000440). The US Department of Health and Human Services and the Pan American Health Organization have sponsored research on the impact of tobacco smoking (items bi 94000408 and bi 94005360), and there are also new publications on health status and health service utilization (item bi 94000429) and education (item bi 94000468) in the Commonwealth Caribbean. An important theme in recent scholarship is the demography of the Caribbean, with most interest focused on the dynamics of regional migratory patterns. Considerable research attention has also focused on the social and cultural effects of the economic transformations taking place in the region, particularly their impacts on individual economic well-being. Dominant themes in this body of research include the effect of the economic crisis on the region's agricultural systems, the family, and women.
