Protein crystallography: the human genome in 3-D
Feature: May 1998 Recent developments in X-ray crystallography at synchrotron radiation sources and progress in the production of good-quality protein crystals are leading to important advances in our knowledge of protein structure and function. Naomi Chayen and John Helliwell describe how recent advances in protein crystallography are providing new insights into their structure and properties.
It is impossible to overstate the importance of proteins to plant and animal life. Much of the tissue in the human body is made of protein, as are all of the enzymes that catalyse reactions in the body, the globins that transport and store oxygen, the antibodies responsible for the body's immune response and hormones such as insulin. Proteins are macromolecules made from combinations of the 20 naturally occurring amino acids. A typical protein contains about 300 amino acids, although some proteins can contain as many as 1000, and multi-macromolecular protein and nucleic-acid complexes represent further levels of complexity. Amino acids are small molecules that are made up mostly of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen, although two amino acids also contain sulphur.

Some Important Contributions
Comparison of the structures of ordinary and `heavy' ice.
With J.D. Bernal, published an early, and now classic, study of hydrogen bonding in metal hydroxides.
First determination of the crystal structure of barium titanate, BaTiO3 - one of the most important ferroelectrics used widely in industry for its dielectric properties. Discovered complexities in feldspar structures, and distinguished between unit cell and lattice disorders.
Impact on ferroelectricity theory through her research on titanates and perovskites. "Helen's impact on ferroelectricity was profound, especially in the early days. She brought to the subject a visual aspect embodied in the crystal structures of ferroelectrics, thus showing how this important effect arose. Her book, Ferroelectricity in Crystals , the first book on the subject, was for a long time just about the only book on the subject and became almost a "bible" for those working in ferroelectricity." Professor A. Michael Glazer, University of Oxford.

The Mineralogical Society of America announces the 2006 MSA Grant for Research in Crystallography, Mineral Physics or Chemistry, and Mineralogy from the Edward H. Kraus Crystallographic Research Fund with contributions from MSA members and friends. This is a $5000 grant for research in crystallography. The award selection will be based on the qualifications of the applicant, the quality, innovativeness, and scientific significance of the proposed research, and the likelihood of success of the project. There are no restrictions on how the grant funds may be spent, as long as they are used in support of research. The only restrictions on eligibility for the grant are that the applicant must have reached his or her 25th birthday but not yet have reached his or her 36th birthday on the date the grant is awarded, and that the person is not a MSA Counsellor. The next award will be made in January, 2006. There are no restrictions on how the grant funds may be spent, as long as they are used in support of research. Travel to meetings, conferences, short courses, non-research fieldtrips, etc. is not considered suitable use of research money. Application forms for the grant may be obtained
