26 miles up Minnesota's renowned Gunflint Trail
On the shores of beautiful East Bearskin Lake
Our Gunflint Trail resort is open year round. Located in Grand Marais Minnesota , Bearskin Lodge features some of the best canoeing, cross country skiing and most pristine wilderness left in the world. Plan your next Minnesota family vacation or winter vacation at our resort where each Gunflint Trail cabin is nestled in it's own secluded nook and features a private dock and cozy fireplace. Spring marks the yearly struggle between winter and summer. As days grow longer and warmer, the melting snow is replenished by intermittent bursts of unleashed fury as winter reluctantly loosens its grasp. Slowly, ever so slowly, the first greens erupt and winter has lost. In the summer families venture north to our Minnesota resort to share quality time together. Old friends reunite. Fishing lines are baited and the thrill of a fighting trophy dances in the minds of adults and children alike. Swimming, canoeing and lazy afternoons go hand in hand.

Franklin Creek State Natural Area is located in Lee County, one mile northwest of the village of Franklin Grove and eight miles east of Dixon just north of Illinois Route 38. The beautiful Franklin Creek flows throughout the 664-acre park. Several large natural springs, hardwood forests, bedrock outcroppings, and a large variety of flora and fauna comprise a pristine ecosystem.
History
Pioneer families in the 1830s found the Franklin Creek area to be an inviting new home on the sometimes unfriendly prairie. Large, cool springs provided ample amounts of pure drinking water and early refrigeration, hardwood forests provided construction materials, and the creek provided fish for food and water power to run saw and grist mills. The deep, pleasant valleys protected by limestone and sandstone bluffs made ideal homesites shielded from cold winter winds. The mill spring, the largest in the park, provided water power for the largest grist mill in Lee County, constructed in 1847. Still today, many ponds and rock outcroppings along Franklin Creek carry names given to them by pioneer families.

Located near the confluence of the Mississippi and Apple rivers in northwestern Illinois, the 2,500-acre Mississippi Palisades State Park is rich in American Indian history. Natural Features Palisades is the word used to describe a line of lofty, steep cliffs usually seen along a river, and Mississippi Palisades, 3 miles north of Savanna in Carroll County, handsomely lives up to its name. Caves are evident as are dangerous sink holes-limestone caves that go straight down. Erosion has carved intriguing rock formations, including Indian Head, with its aquiline characteristics, and Twin Sisters, a pair of humanoid figures on the bluff tops. The U.S. Interior Department recognized the remarkable nature of this area when in 1973 it designated acreage here as a national landmark. Animal life, within the park and the river areas immediately adjoining it, is varied. Waterfowl and shorebirds are numerous, as are wild turkeys. Striking pileated woodpeckers make their home in the park, and depending on ice conditions, eagles feed at the river in January and February. Because so many birds migrate along the river, their lyrical songs can be heard at the Mississippi Palisades each spring and fall.
