Fire and movement. A couple of combatants lunge forward during a battle in Saija, Lapland on 21 February 1940. The Finns used to say of themselves that they were born on skis, and the world outside believed them. They would not make the same claim so lightly now, as the ski has changed from being an everyday utility, a means of transport in rural areas, to its present status as an item of equipment for sports and leisure. That said, one should not forget the exception of the Finnish army, which still respects the ski as an effective aid to mobility and trains its soldiers to operate in snow. They did so to great effect in the Winter War of 1939-1940 against the Soviet Union and in the subsequent campaign against the same adversary between 1941 and 1944. A few years ago, in his book

This is a comprehensive guide to Washington's ski and snow-play areas. Washington has a number of ski resorts with excellent facilities for alpine skiing, snowboarding, and cross country skiing. There are hundreds of lifts and runs, and miles of Nordic ski trails to explore. The winter scenery is breathtaking, and the mountaintop views are awesome. Most ski areas can be reached in less than two hours from major cities. Washington's winter recreation also includes snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and dog sledding. Lodging is available at some ski resorts and in nearby mountain communities. Winter driving conditions often prevail, so check the Mountain Pass Report before heading up.

WASHINGTON SKI AREAS

For locations refer to the map above The mountains and terrain in Washington offer enough diversity to challenge any level of skier or boarder - relaxed slopes, steep runs, ungroomed glades, and rugged backcountry. Snow usually makes its first appearance in late October. Most ski areas open by mid-November, and close in mid-April, depending on conditions. Ski resorts offer a wide range of facilities, from night skiing, ski schools and rentals to day care, family packages, and on-site lodging. Vermont's Green Mountains make an ideal setting for most of the state's 40-plus cross-country ski centers. There is a choice of resort towns such as Stowe and the more typical New England towns such as Woodstock. The Catamount Trail runs for over 250 miles from the Massachusetts border to Canada. It is ungroomed except for where it connects to the several nordic centers along its route.

The Last Run for the Jackson Hole Tram
Is it possible? Can they do it? The word coming out of Jackson Hole is that this is the final season to ride the tram to the top. If you have ever waited in that line to get first tracks or jammed yourself in at the end of the day you will feel the sorrow. 40 years of faithful service and it soon will be gone with no real replacement in the works. What a shame, I guess it’s time to earn your turns on Rendezvous Bowl.
