Croquet goes far beyond the extreme
By Matt Barton, The Carillon Published: Tuesday, March 16, 2004 REGINA (CUP) - It is the latest in X-treme winter sports. Furious ball and mallet action coupled with all-terrain. It takes concentration, finesse and intelligence to become a master of croquet. Yes, we're talking about croquet.
Just outside the Riddell Centre's front doors on a Friday afternoon, facing a brisk wind and bitter cold, the University of Regina Croquet Enthusiast Consortium (URCEC) had gathered to engage in the latest match of croquet.
The cold was no match for these paragons of athletic prowess and goodwill. They were all smiles and sniffles between measured and calculated shots.
"We have been playing croquet since high school," said Ross Phillips, President of URCEC. "We'd play croquet on the front lawn during spares. It just kind of grew from there.
"We started playing at the university last fall in October when the Students' Union officially sanctioned us [URCEC] as a club."

But then we are delivered with the incomparable Claremont Croquet Classic, saving us all from the dregs of inactivity. The competition is heating up once again in the 29th edition of this island staple, with early-round tournament play being competed this week before culminating in the singles and double finals on Saturday, Aug. 6.
"Larry really got everyone involved in this tournament," said Rothman. "Pretty much everyone who is playing right now probably owes it to Larry."
"I'm really following Larry's example," said Rothman. "He won it two years in a row a couple of years ago, so he decided to sit out the next couple of tournaments. The last five years its only been Larry and me in the finals, so I think it would be a lot more fun for others to get a chance to come out and win."
On the doubles side, look for defending champs Dave Nelson and Paul Madeira to be among the favorites to take the title this year. The duo already picked up a victory on Monday morning, skirting past Jay Madeira and Jill Harkins, 32-29, in a match that was played in a heavy downpour.

Not the largest section at PoloFarm Sports Club ... but as enthusiastic and persevering as you'll find - out in all weathers the year round.
Most people imagine croquet to be a simple game involving hitting a ball through a hoop in the garden. There is, however, another side to it. Played to Association Rules, it is transformed into a highly competitive sport which not only requires excellent eye-to-hand co-ordination but also a strong sense of tactical awareness.
There are now over 150 clubs in the Croquet Association which organises national and regional competitions. 18 countries are represented in The World Croquet Federation.
THE CLUB
The Club was founded in a garden in the village of Chartham Hatch in 1991. It moved to the Polo Farm site in 1996 where it now has two full-sized lawns and its own pavilion. Most of the activity is during the summer months but play is possible throughout the year.
THE GAME
There are two types of croquet. We play both at Polo Farm. Golf Croquet is the simpler game and is more suitable for less experienced players but it nevertheless has an enthusiastic following.

87. How To Play - Association Croquet - The Game And How It Is Played

http://www.oxfordcroquet.com/coach/capubs/index.asp
http://www.oxfordcroquet.com/coach/capubs/index.asp Dr Ian Plummer Oxford Croquet How To Play Association Croquet - The Game and how it is played Association Croquet is a challenging and intriguing sport requiring tactical ability, judgment and still rather than strength and fast reflexes. And to dispel the myth that croquet is a vicious game of hitting your opponents balls into the shrubbery, any ball leaving the lawn is immediately brought back on to the 'yard' line. The game is played as singles or doubles but in either case the blue and black balls always play against the red and yellow balls. In singles, each player uses both balls, in doubles one each. The Object of the Game is to make both balls of your side pass through all the hoops in order and then hit the peg before your opponent. The first hoop has a blue top and the last hoop to be run, 'rover' has a red top. After the sixth hoop, you run the six hoops again in the reverse direction; hence they are named 'one-back, two-back', etc. until the 'penultimate' hoop and finally rover. See diagram for the route. Coloured clips are placed on the hoops to remind players (and show spectators) which hoop a has to run next. They are placed on top for the first time through, on the side for the return journey. To Begin a Game the balls are played onto the lawn one at a time, alternatively each side, from either A or B baulk (see diagram below). After that the player can choose which ball to play during each turn. At the beginning of a turn a player has only one stroke but, depending on what you do, you may gain extra strokes. If your ball hits another ball it is called a 'roquet' and you earn the right to take 'croquet', the stroke that is unique to the game of Croquet and where the fun really begins.

http://www.oxfordcroquet.com/history/american/index.asp Dr Ian Plummer Oxford Croquet History Croquet: Lore and Legend Extract from: " Croquet: The Complete Guide to History, Strategy, Rules and Records " by James Charlton & William Thompson The origin of croquet, like that of many other sports, is obscure. Although the game has been played in roughly its present form for about one hundred years, its antecedents extend back many centuries. As long ago as the fourteenth century, peasants in Brittany and Southern France amused themselves playing a game called Paille Maille , in which crude mallets were used to knock balls through hoops made of bent willow branches. This ancestral version of croquet persisted, and by the seventeenth century, Pele Mele , as it was called in England, had become popular with Charles II and his court. Diarist Samuel Pepys, in his entry of April 2, 1661, wrote that "I went into St. James Parke, where I saw the Duke of Yorke playing at Pesle Mesle - the first time that I ever saw that sport." Pall Mall, as the game came finally to be called, was played with a curved club, a wooden ball, and two hoops. The court was often made of powdered cockleshells, and the hoops were decorated with flowers. The game lost favor in the 18th and 19th centuries, and little was heard of it until the 1850's. In 1852 or 1853, croquet was introduced into England from Ireland, where a game called

Although croquet is a rather young sport, its ancestry can be traced at least to the 14th century, and there are a couple of stories about how it originated.
One is that lawn bowlers developed an indoor form of their sport to be played during the winter, adding hoops and mallets to make the game more challenging on the much smaller playing area. This indoor version of lawn bowling then moved back outdoors and become known in France as paille-maille ("ball-mallet").
The other is that paille-maille was originally a form of outdoor billiards. However, judging by what scanty documentation there is, billiards seems to have come along about a century later. It's quite possible that the movement went the other waythat paille-maille moved indoors and become billiards.
In any event, the sport existed for several centuries without becoming particularly popular. Scottish golfers seem to have taken it up, possibly as a kind of practice, during the 16th century and, when James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1604, he brought paille-maille equipment as well as golf clubs to his new court.
Played during the 17th century by Charles II and his courtiers at St. James's Park in London, the name of the game was anglicized to Pall Mall, which also became the name of a nearby street. "Mall" then turned into a generic word for any street used for public strolls. And now, of course, it usually refers to an enclosed area where people stroll from store to store.

Spotlight On Schools Featured Columnists Letters ... April 2001 New York City September 2001 Croquet: A Gentle Lawn Game
By Tom Kertes “There are only three resorts in the entire United States right now that teach croquet,” said Jerry Stark, who teaches this unique sport at the Meadowood Resort in California’s Napa Valley. “It’s a great sport but it has never achieved widespread popularity till this day.” Indeed, the game’s greatest fame came during Hollywood’s Golden Age when movie moguls like Louis B. Mayer, Darryl Zanuck, and Jack Warner would play daily and, dressed in impeccable whites, hold regular weekend croquet parties on their magnificently manicured lawns. “Of course, that is the crux of the problem,” said Stark with a smile. “To play the game as it’s meant to be played you do need perfect lawns. So the costs are exceedingly high. Also, this is a real difficult game to learn if you want to play it at the highest level.” The basic idea of croquet is to get two of your balls (colored blue, red, black, and yellow) into your hoops in a certain order before your opponent does by pushing them through strategically placed wickets with a mallet. But, according to Stark, “once you learn to play the game, you’ll realize that there are a lot of nuances to it.”

Origins and Ground Billiards
Mallet and ball games are thought to have been first played in England and Europe during the middle ages. Games would normally involve only one ball which would be struck through very wide hoops. A Croquet-like game is believed to have been played by thirteenth century French peasants who used crudely fashioned mallets to whack wooden balls balls through hoops made of willow branches. A variety of equipment has been found indicating that, as was typical, there were no standards and a variety of rules and types of game were in existence for several centuries. One type of game which this author calls Ground Billiards' featured a hoop and a stick, a point being scored for each time your ball was first through the hoop and onto hit the stick. At some point in the 15th century someone chose to invent an indoor variation of this played on a table which led to Billiards and that whole family of games
Closh
and hoops/rings? Mystery notwithstanding, from these medieval games sprang at least 4 modern distinct ancestors, all of which are still played today with varying degrees of popularity.
