North Florida Research and Education Center - Suwannee Valley Research Report 99-12
Robert C. Hochmuth, Lei Lani Davis, David Dinkins, Mike Sweat Abstract Small farmers throughout North Florida continue to seek information on high value specialty crops. A greenhouse hydroponic vegetable industry has been present in this region for over 10 years. As the population of the region continues to increase, demand for local production of high value crops such as strawberry also increases. Research at the University of Florida, North Florida Research and Education Center - Suwannee Valley was conducted to develop and demonstrate an outdoor soilless production system. This system utilizes the technology for soilless bag culture currently used by greenhouse tomato growers and frost protection via polypropylene row covers as used by field strawberry growers in North Florida. Harvest of fresh strawberries throughout the winter is possible in North Florida with the use of row covers. Soilless culture provides an opportunity for many small producers to intensively produce strawberries outdoors without the high initial investment of mulching and fumigation equipment.

C-119 THE AGRICULTURAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRY: REGULATIONS, TECHNOLOGY,ECONOMIC CHANGE AND NEW PROFIT OPPORTUNITIES
Heber Boulard
PROJECT ANALYST
INTRODUCTION
STUDY GOAL AND OBJECTIVES The study is designed to inform those with a stake in the agricultural chemical and related industries about: 1. Important trends in domestic consumption, production, and prices of fertilizers and pesticides; 2. Major shifts in worldwide fertilizers and pesticides trade; 3. How the industry is structured, and how it is rapidly changing; and 4. Opportunities for profiting from these trends and changes. It also provides information on forces influencing market trends and industry structural changes such as: a) Technology including the movement toward Low Input Sustainable Agriculture (LISA) and the role of competing methods of controlling pests and adding plant nutrients, e.g., biotechnology and physical methods such as bug vacuums and infrared weed control; b) Regulations such as the 1990 Farm Bill, the 1990 Clean Air Act, and various state laws;

In memory: Paul Steiner, Professor of Plant Pathology at University of Maryland, College Park, died at his home on Saturday, October 28th after a lengthy illness. Dr. Steiner was 58. Mid-Atlantic grape producers were familiar with Dr. Steiner through his tireless efforts at educating growers on grape disease management. A memorial to Dr. Steiner can be read at: http://www.marylandwine.com/mgga2/misc/ps_memorial_nn.html Commercial Grape Report for Virginia: The Virginia Agricultural Statistics Service is collecting their annual Virginia grape acreage and grape production data. Those with commercial vineyards should receive the survey questionnaire within the next 30 days. Please take a few minutes to complete and return the survey. State agencies such as Virginia Tech and Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services use the composite data to monitor industry growth, document program impacts, and justify fiscal and personnel resource expenditures. Your input is essential for accurate data! The 1999 Virginia grape production was 4560 tons, a 43% increase from 1998. New vineyards and increased production with existing vineyards may push that figure above 5000 tons this year. We are told that the Virginia grape data will make it into the federal crop report in 2001 or 2002. A review of the current, federal crop report (
