Crohn's Disease Information
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive tract and it can involve any part of it - from the mouth to the anus. It typically affects the terminal ileum as well as demarcated areas of large bowel, with other areas of the bowel being relatively unaffected. It is often associated with auto-immune disorders outside the bowel, such as aphthous stomatitis and rheumatoid arthritis. Crohn's disease should not be confused with a non-progressive and non-degenerative digestive disorder called irritable bowel syndrome. IBS is not an autoimmune disease. Ulcerative colitis is a sibling autoimmune disease to Crohn's but only impacts the colon while Crohn's can impact any part of the digestive tract. Furthermore, Crohn's tends to impact multiple layers of the bowel lining which can lead to many additional and hard-to-treat complications. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are quite distinct diseases but in practice there are sometimes difficulties distinguishing between them, especially in mild cases - these are usually simply classified as "chronic inflammatory bowel disease" or "indeterminate colitis".

Crohn's Disease , also termed ileitis, regional enteritis, or granulomatous colitis, is a chronic inflammation of the intestine, often involving the lower section of the small intestine called the ileum. Crohn's disease is relatively rare and can often be controlled with medical management. Around 70% of Crohn's sufferers will require surgery at some point, typically to correct obstruction, abscesses, or perforation. While surgical treatment can alleviate the symptoms it does not cure Crohn's disease.

Microbial foodborne illness is the largest class of emerging infectious diseases. In 1999, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released the latest figures on the incidence of US foodborne illness considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be the most complete estimate ever compiled. Seventy-six million Americans every year get food poisoning, more than double the previous estimate. In today's food safety lottery there's a 1 in 4 chance you'll get sick, a 1 in 840 chance you'll be hospitalized, and a 1 in 55,000 chance that an American will die from foodborne illness annually. The CDC estimates 97% of foodborne illness is caused by animal foods. The latest United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) survey, for example, found 9 out of 10 Thanksgiving turkeys contaminated with Campylobacter

Crohn's Disease
What is Crohn's disease? Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease. It is a chronic condition that may recur at various times over a lifetime. It usually involves the small intestine, most often the lower part called the ileum. However, inflammation may also affect the entire digestive tract, including the mouth, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, appendix or anus.
Crohn's disease is also called ileitis or enteritis.
What causes Crohn's disease? There are many theories regarding Crohn's disease, but none has yet been proven. One theory suggests that some agent, perhaps a virus or bacteria, affects the body's immune system and triggers an inflammatory reaction in the intestinal wall. Although there is a lot of evidence that patients with this disease have abnormalities of the immune system, it is not known whether the immune problems are a cause or a result of the disease.
Physicians believe that there is little proof that Crohn's disease is caused by emotional distress or by an unhappy childhood.

Riot Act Pearl Jam Music from Sony Release date: 12 November, 2002 Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready announced today that he is suffering from Crohn's disease. He admitted he's suffered from the debilitating stomach ailment for the past 15 years, and decided to do so after witnessing the strength of a young teenager who'd suffered through 6 surgeries and still had a long way to go. During his speech, the artist related a particularly embarrassing incident to demonstrate how Crohn's can strike at any time. "Playing onstage, I'm always aware of where the bathrooms are," he admits. "When Crohn's hits, I have to run, or it won't be pretty. Definition
www.nucleusinc.com Crohn's disease is a severe, chronic inflammatory bowel disease. It causes inflammation, ulcers , and bleeding in the digestive tract. Crohn's disease usually affects the small intestine, particularly the last section (called the ileum), but any part of the digestive tract can be affected from the mouth to the anus.
Causes
The cause of Crohn's disease is not known. Inflammatory bowel diseases ( ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) seem to run in some families. Some researchers think that a virus or bacteria causes the immune system to over-react and damage your intestines.
Risk Factors
A risk factor is something that increases your chance of getting a disease or condition.

Symptoms
Symptoms include:
  • Diarrhea Abdominal cramps and pain Rectal bleeding Anemia Weight loss Fatigue, weakness

When was the last time you had a stomachache? It's normal for all kids to get bellyaches once in a while. But some kids get bad stomach pain all the time. They are tired and even feel like they might throw up . Some of these kids may have what's called inflammatory bowel disease (or IBD About one million Americans have IBD, which can be diagnosed at any age, but it most often affects adolescents and young adults between 15 and 35. In the United States, it's estimated that as many as 100,000 children younger than 18 years have IBD. The disease has even been found in infants as young as 18 months. About 30,000 new cases of IBD are diagnosed each year. So, just what is IBD? How do you know if you have it? And what help is available if you do? What Is IBD?
Inflammatory (say: in- flah -muh-tor-ee) bowel disease is not a single ailment. It actually refers to a number of disorders that cause inflammation (say: in-fluh- may -shun) and frequently ulcers (say: ul -surs) in the intestinal (say: in- tes -tuh-nul) tract. Ulcers are tears or breaks in the lining of the intestines that can cause pain or bleeding.

Verified by National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) February 17, 2005 Sponsored by: National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Information provided by: National Institutes of Health Clinical Center (CC) ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Purpose This multi-center study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) for treating Crohn's disease symptoms. ECP is a procedure in which white blood cells are collected by leukapheresis (see below) and treated with ultraviolet A (UVA) light (a wavelength invisible to the human eye) in a process called photopheresis. The treated cells are returned to the body, where they cause changes in other similar cells. ECP is approved for treating skin symptoms in cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (cancer of white blood cells called lymphocytes), and it has been used experimentally in other conditions where white cells are involved in abnormal inflammation. In a previous preliminary study of, 8 of 10 Crohn's patients treated with ECP were able to stop taking steroids while keeping their symptoms under control. This study will assess this treatment in a larger number of patients. Patients 18 years of age and older who have had Crohn's disease for at least 6 months, have failed treatment with immunosuppressants, are taking corticosteroids, have active symptoms, are not pregnant, and weigh at least 40 kg (88 pounds) may be eligible for this study. Candidates are screened with a medical history, physical examination, electrocardiogram, blood tests, and urine pregnancy test for women who can bear children. Candidates also complete a 32-item questionnaire about how Crohn's disease affects their life and activities and fill out diary cards measuring the severity of their symptoms for 7 days.

About 3,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Crohn’s Disease affects men and women equally. People with Crohn’s Disease will have special health concerns which need to be understood by colleagues and employers, especially at workplaces with sickness absence policies. This leaflet is designed to raise awareness of Crohn’s Disease and the impact it has.
    What is Crohn's Disease?
Crohn's Disease is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the bowel. It can affect any part of the digestive tract and includes some or all layers of the gut, causing deep ulceration. Crohn's Disease is not infectious. There is no permanent cure, but with appropriate treatment it is possible to achieve long periods of remission. The cause or causes have not yet been identified. Both genetic factors and environmental triggers such as diet and infection are likely to be involved.
