What is Crohn's Disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines. It primarily causes ulcerations in the small and large intestines, but can affect the digestive system anywhere between the mouth and the anus. It is named after the physician who described the disease in a landmark paper written in 1932. It is also called Morbus Crohn's, Granulomatous enteritis, Regional enteritis, or Terminal ileitis. The disease is found in equal frequency in men and women, and usually affects young patients in their teens or early twenties. Once the disease begins, it tends to be a chronic, recurrent condition with periods of remission and disease exacerbation. The disease tends to be more common in relatives of patients with Crohn's disease.
What causes Crohn's Disease
The cause of Crohn's disease is unknown. Some scientists suspect that infection by certain bacteria, such as strains of mycobacterium, may be the cause of Crohn's disease. To date, there has been no convincing evidence that the disease is caused by infection. Crohn's disease is not contagious. Although diet may affect the symptoms in patients with Crohn's disease, it appears unlikely that diet is responsible for the onset of the disease.

What is Crohn's Disease?
There is a lot of confusion about what Crohn's disease is. The following information and the articles on this site will help clear up this confusion. What Crohn's Disease Is Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that can cause intense intestinal distress and can have potentially serious complications, such as fistulas and abscesses. Researchers don't know what causes Crohn's disease, but a number of theories are being studied. These include heredity, environment and immune response. Crohn's disease is a relatively rare disease affecting only an estimated 500 thousand Americans. What Crohn's Disease Is Not Crohn's disease in not contagious, nor is it caused by stress or emotional distress. And, while diet can certainly have an effect on severity of symptoms, it is not in itself a cause of Crohn's. Early symptoms of Crohn's can often be confused with other bowel diseases, such as irritable bowel syndrome. As the disease progresses, however, symptoms become more pronounced and distinctive.

Crohns Disease and Living Probiotics welcomes you. This page is created to be an informative stepping-stone to an awareness that not only focuses on Crohns disease and living probiotics but also reveals helpful information regarding many common chronic diseases and illnesses that our population is battling daily. Chronic diseases are on the up rise and no significant studies have shown a decrease in any future plateau. Pharmaceutical drugs are prescribed to treat the symptoms for those suffering from illnesses and chronic diseases such as Crohns Disease Ulcerative Colitis Acid Reflux Candida Yeast Infections ... Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) , and the list goes on. Treating the symptoms rather than treating the actual disease is causing a litany of side effects, many which may actually be exacerbating the illness itself. What is the result? More medications are prescribed to counteract the newly acquired symptoms from the original prescribed medication. To simplify the previous statement, placing a bandage over the original bandage. What we believe is that modern medicine has had many wonderful breakthroughs in the treatment of acute illnesses, which have been successfully, termed as modern miracles. Millions of people are affected by these medical marvels with little understanding of side effects or long-term usage.

What is Crohn's Disease?
Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease, IBD for short, that causes persistent or recurring inflammation of one or more parts of the intestine. Crohn's disease can affect any part of the gastrointestinal system, from the mouth to the anus. The disease was named after Dr. Burrill Crohn, who was one of the first to describe the disease in medical literature. There is no known cure for Crohn's disease. Even though this disease is common, it has not been talked about until recently. The causes are unknown and is not due to stress as was once thought. Inflammatory bowel disease can occur at any age, but usually begins in the late teens or early adulthood. It is sometimes associated with medical problems outside of the intestine, including arthritis, cancer, gallstones, kidney stones, and skin conditions. Other associated names are ileitis and enteritis.

Treatment Options for Crohn's Disease
Treatment for Crohn's disease depends on its location and severity, the presence of complications and the patient's response to medications. The goal of treatment is to reduce the inflammation that triggers symptoms. Treatment relieves symptoms and results in long-term remission. Treatment for Crohn's disease usually involves medication and/or surgery
Drug Therapy
Drug therapies must be custom-designed for each patient. Finding which medications best alleviate the symptoms may take time. When a patient with Crohn's disease undergoes surgery, it is important that the health care team (including the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and the primary treating physician) know which medications the patient is taking. Aminosalicylates (mesalamine)
Many patients with mild to moderate disease are treated with medications containing mesalamine. These medications differ based on what parts of the bowel are treated. The use of mesalamine to treat Crohn's disease, either to achieve or maintain remission, is sometimes controversial because not all studies have consistently shown that mesalamine is effective for Crohn's disease. Mesalamine is usually well tolerated and has no serious side effects. Patients may experience nausea, headache and diarrhea.

What is Crohn's disease?
Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are the illnesses called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) . These two diseases are very much alike. In Crohn's disease, inflammation can be found in the lining of the intestine. It can also involve the whole thickness of the bowel wall. Crohn's disease is usually in the lower part of the small intestine, called the ileum. However, it can affect any part of the digestive tract, from where food is taken in (the mouth) to where food comes out (the anus). Ulcerative colitis only affects the colon. The inflammation can cause pain. It can also make the colon empty often, which causes diarrhea. Some patients with Crohn's disease have long periods of remission (when symptoms disappear). This may last months or years. However, there is no way to tell when a remission will happen or when disease symptoms will return. There is no cure for Crohn's disease.

From: meph
Date: Sat, 03 Aug 1996 14:38:17 +0100 Here's a snippet from an article I found this week, may be of interest to some... Take from a supplement of a national newspaper dated 28 July 96 :- That Gut Feeling : Scientists at St Georges hospital in London are claiming there is a link between Crohns disease - a debilitating digestive problem that affects more than 40,000 people in the UK - and drinking milk. Professor John Hermon-Taylor, a surgeon, and his team have reported finding minute traces of an organism known as myco-bacterium paratubercolosis in two thirds of the intestinal tissue removed from Crohns patients after surgery and although the National Dairy Council has disputed such claims on the basis of its own studies, the hospital researchers say they have also found the organism in supplies of whole, pasteurised milk. Hermon-Taylor and his colleagues are suggesting mycobacterium, which causes Johnes disease in sheep and cattle (a condition similar to Crohns disease in humans), is being transferred through food and water systems and can sometimes survive the process of pasteurisation. The full results of the study will be published in September and these may be convincing enough for sufferers to be told, for the first time since the condition was originally diagnosed in 1932, that scientists have discovered a concrete cause. Although public awareness of the condition is still limited, 3000 new cases are diagnosed every year. Crohns affects both men and women equally. The incidence has doubled in the past 20 years.

Crohn's disease
Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory process which can affect any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus, but is most commonly seen (approximately 50% of all cases) in the last part of the small intestine Crohn's disease frequently has its onset in early adult life. Some people who suffer from Crohn's disease have alternating periods of relative health (remission), alternating with periods of disease (relapse or flare), while other patients have continuous symptoms from continued inflammation There are many theories about what causes Crohn's disease, but none has yet been proven. The most popular theory is that the body's immune system reacts to a bacteria or a virus by causing ongoing inflammation in the intestine.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are a group of chronic disorders that cause inflammation of the small and large intestines. There are two major members - ulcerative colitis which affects only the large intestine, and Crohn's disease which can affect the whole of the gastrointestinal tract from the mouth to the anus. Ulcerative colitis involves only the inner lining of the bowel whereas Crohn's disease involves the full thickness of the bowel. Usually in Crohn's the inflammation is concentrated to certain areas of the bowel. The gastrointestinal tract starting from the mouth is serially oesophagus (gullet), stomach, small bowel (duodenum, jejunum, and ileum), large bowel (ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon), rectum and anus. Crohn's disease most often affects the ileum and/or the large bowel and characteristically develops what are called skip lesions with normal bowel between two areas of inflammation.
