When I used to think of crock-pot recipes, I thought of cold winter nights, a fire blazing in the fireplace, the house and kitchen a refuge against the wind and snow outside. How cozy to sit down to a piping hot stew that had been simmering all day! Then I moved to Los Angeles where the temperature dips to the low sixties during the winter requiring (perhaps!) a light sweater and the only fire blazing is an artificial one. I had to rethink my slow-cooker use. I've come to realize that slow-cookers are very convenient. Not only are they good for Shabbat lunch but for weekdays as well. Throw everything in the morning, go to work or to fulfill other responsibilities, and come back at the end of the day to a delicious dinner. They're great on vacations too! Here are just a few of the hundreds of possibilities of recipes for the crock-pot. Most should be cooked on high for 8 - 10 hours. If you are making it for Shabbat lunch, cook on low instead, and make sure it is at least half cooked before Shabbat. All recipes are for a 6-quart crock-pot.

Way back in the dark ages my mother sent me a crock pot (they were just introduced). I had gone to work, had a DH and young DS and was bound and determined I would be SUPERMOM (LOL). Today I am retired on disability, my DS and DD have moved away and we still use our same crock pot once a week. In seventeen years of work I learned many recipe's, drew rave reviews for dinners, fed my son and daughters many sports teams after school, and sadly heard several refrains of "gee, I wish my mom had a crock pot". Preparation, understanding the process, and foods that work helps and anyone can do it. When I went on trips, my DH kept everyone at the table by using the pot. And it also provided lessons in responsibility as the children grew and had to make salad, set the table, etc. till a parent got home. Both children graduated to "college crock pots" and began their own recipe collections. Here is one of our favorites: Boneless(or bone-in) pork chops 2 carrots(peeled) 1 can cream of mushroom OR chicken rice OR cream of chicken soup. Generic brand works well.
