ABOUT COPPER DOTS
Being an avid knitter, over the years I have found it extremely difficult and frustrating to have patterns put into braille for my convenience; so when I decided to purchase a braille embosser, I thought it would be well worthwhile to compile several pattern books and try to help other people who, I am sure, have been in the same situation as I have been on many occasions. Therefore, I compiled several books with interesting patterns and designs which I have collected over the years. They come from far and wide: as far away as Australia and Scotland and several of these patterns have been designed by friends themselves. Although I don't crochet, I feel there is a market for crochet books as well as knitting books, so a couple of friends have kindly helped me to put some books together, in the hope that you will find something of interest to whet your appetite.

  • 125. Sweater -- Free Guidelines For Knit Or Crochet
Offers general instructions for a basic raglan sweater.

General Guidelines for a Basic Sweater
Okay, how in Kali's name can anyone give you directions for a sweater that work for both knitting and crochet? Well, the answer is that this isn't a pattern, but simply a set of guidelines with which you can get a general idea how to make a basic sweater. Many of the same basic construction guidelines hold for both knitting and crochet, even if the particulars differ. You can build a bookcase using either a hammer and nails, or a screwdriver and some screws. The particulars might differ, but many of the same general principles hold. The type of sweater I'm going to go over here is called a raglan sweater. There are variations on this, and I'll run over them lightly at the end, but for now, I'll be examining a very basic type of raglan sweater. (Here's a picture of one that I crocheted so you can see what it looks like.) The advantages to raglan sweaters are numerous, but the major one is that you don't have to worry about your gauge. Normally, when you buy a commercial sweater pattern, you need to make sure you stay in the gauge that the pattern calls for, or else you could end up with a sweater that will fit a seven foot tall penguin or a three foot tall garden rake but certain not you or anyone you know. Raglans are made from the neck down, and you can try them on as you go, so you just sort of keep going until you have to stop. Trying on as you go is a lot easier when you're crocheting than knitting, but you can manage with both.

Enlarge Photo Svetlana is from Latvia where people say that all Latvian girls are born with needles in their hands and knitting. She has crocheted and knitted since she can remember. At university, Svetlana received a degree in architecture and then completed a course at the Academy of Arts. That experience in colors, shades and shaping has been very helpful in her crochet and knit designing. She prefers to design her own sweaters or decorate ready-made garments with crochet to make them unique. Svetlana moved to Canada with her family in 1994 and has been employed with Coats Patons since 1996. Her crochet and knit designs appear in many of the Patons patterns books.
