Croatian Research at the Family History Library
by Thomas K. Edlund
The officers of FEEFHS, in their ongoing effort to encourage and assist genealogical research in Eastern Europe, have asked me to summarize the resources available from the Family History Library (FHL) which relate to the former Austrian kingdoms of Croatia and Slavonia, with marginal reference made to Slovenia.
Such a request is meaningful only when contextualized to the intellectual access systems provided by the information retrieval systems of the FHL. As with the holdings of other libraries, the collections of the FHL are inventoried and described in a catalog. Distributed yearly to over 2,700 Family History Centers worldwide, the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC) is the single resource providing information to the microfilming efforts of the Genealogical Society of Utah (GSU).
The intent of this lecture is to familiarize the researcher, in a general way, with the methods of locating materials of interest currently available at the FHL. The presentation is actually intended more as a "practicum" than a lecture. In addition to retrieval procedures, I will cover background history, size of the collection, the GSU's microfilming endeavors in contemporary Croatia and Slovenia, record types represented in the collection, research aids necessary to use them, and finally review specific examples.

http://www.ceu.hu/medstud/events/ev004/grgin.htm
Borislav Grgin (University of Zagreb, Croatia) The Impact of the Crusades on Medieval Croatia In this paper the author tries to analyze how the crusades influenced the Croatian lands, namely medieval Croatia and Dalmatia. The relevant sources for this attempt are connected with the First, the Fourth and the Fifth Crusades. The earliest event associated with the crusades in Croatia is the death of the Croatian king Zvonimir, in 1089. Namely, several later texts, mainly originating from the 14 th to the 16 th centuries, speak about the alleged murder of King Zvonimir, that occurred as a consequence of the king’s attempts to join the crusaders with his own army. This idea was, allegedly, violently opposed by the nobles and the rest of the population. Taking into account the facts that Zvonimir died several years before the start of the First Crusade and that the contemporary sources do not know anything about the alleged assassination, it will be argued in the paper that the later texts do not represent a credible source, but they reflect the ideas of a significantly different period. Reliable data about the First Crusades and the crusaders in Croatia derive from the contemporary sources, such as the report of Raymond of Agiles, the court priest of Count of Toulouse Raymond IV, who passed through Croatia together with the crusaders on their way to the Holy Land, in 1096. A second report regarding the transfer of crusaders through Croatia, mainly coinciding with Agiles was written by William of Tyre (around 1170). However, it contains some new and important data. Both sources agree on the basic facts that the Croats received the crusaders’ army with fear and mistrust and that skirmishes between the two sides frequently occurred.

Archaeologists Strike Gold With Major Bronze Age Discovery in Croatia

ARCHAEOLOGY, EUROPE Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Description Archaeologists have discovered what may be one of the most important archaeological sites of the last 50 years, in a riverbed in Croatia.
The site at the Valley of the River Cetina, which is geographically and strategically placed at a major European crossroads, holds the key to unlocking over 8,000 years of Balkan history. Dr Vincent Gaffney, Director of the University’s Institute for Archaeology and Antiquity and Cetina Project Leader says, “The Cetina Valley is certainly the most remarkable site that I have, and will ever, have the privilege of being involved in – a once in a lifetime discovery for any archaeologist. As the majority of the Cetina Valley site is waterlogged, the level of preservation is quite exceptional. I believe this to be one of the most important archaeological wetlands in Europe.” An initial survey of the site has uncovered remarkable finds spanning a period of history from 6,000 BC onwards. Timbers 3 metres in length are clearly visible through the clear water from the riverbank, showing evidence of late Neolithic/early Bronze Age wooden settlements that are comparable to the Swiss lake settlements. A large number of metal and stone objects have also been retrieved which appear to have been thrown into the river deliberately, possibly as offerings to river gods. Items include over 90 swords, a Roman legionary dagger complete with sheath, over 30 Greco-Illyrian helmets, plus numerous items of jewellery, axes and spearheads.

PloCe, 20.9.2005 var p=411; var w=728; var h=90; geographical position about ploce .: history tourist attractions sport links history :. Port of Ploce is first mentioned in a document written on 06.11.1387. In that document port of Ploce is mentioned as "a place on the estuary of river Neretva" (ad quedam locum dictum la porto Ploca que est in orificio fluminis Narenti). Document is written in Latin, and in the whole text only "Ploce" is in Croatian, which affirms its name in the 14th century and its historical meaning.
There are two more written documents. First of them is written in 1426 by the Senate of Republic of Dubrovnik, and other one is written by Vicenzo Maria Coronelli (1650.-1718.) in 1696, which includes historical map with Neretva region.
In the middle of 18th century, in the book "Cronaca della citta e teritorio di Narenta", written by reverend Luka Vladimirovic, there is an idea that the port should be built on the place where it is now.
The possibility of building a port of Ploce was first mentioned in the second part of 19th century, in plans of Habsburg monarchy. They started building piers from Neretva estuary to Ploce bay, that even today exist. Only that was made by Monarchy.
The first real discussions about building the port on the place where it is today were held in 1922, when first examinations of terrain were made. In the year of 1927 publication under the topic "Port of Aleksandrovo (Ploce) on Neretva estuary" was published, which includes main plans of building a port.

. The history of Medimurje shows that the destiny of that small piece of land, between the rivers Mura and Drava, not always obliging was. Even though Medimurje used to be under several occupations, under the influences of Austrian and Hungarian rulers, Medimurje kept it's national spirit formed by the traditional Croatian culture. One of the greatest Croatian poets, Ivan Goran Kovacic, said once: "There exist songs in Croatia from Medimurje, which are simply the best , most original and most beautiful products of that kind worldwide". The beauty of the nature, the zealous, unobtrusive, honest and hospitable people have contributed to, that Medimurje has been called now "HORTUS CROATIAE", the flowergarden of Croatia. After the fall of communism in 1990, Croatia became independent and the municipality got back the abbreviation Sveti. Archaeological discoveries showed, that in the near of local church, a military barrack -from Roman period- was settled. That means that Sveti Martin na Muri was located on the border between Dalmatia and Illiricum-Roman Kingdom of that time. The strategic road passed from Ptuj (Petovium - Slovenia) via Sveti Martin na Muri to Szomathely in Hungary. The church of Sveti Martin na Muri dates from 1467-1468 (you can see that on the beans in the church), which are written down with Arabic numbers. The church has been built in a

Croatia wowed the world in 1998 when it came out of virtually nowhere to claim a bronze medal in its first finals appearance ever. There has been a lot of debate recently on whether the nation still has the quality to contend with the best in the globe. Most of the stars from the past World Cup may be past their prime, but you can never ignore what the international experience of players like Robert Prosinecki and Alen Boksic can do at the game's highest level. Croatia may not be among the favorites, but it could surprise a few people again. As the countdown to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan continues, CNNSI.com's Pedro Pinto will take a close look at all of the nations that will contend for football's greatest prize.
