"Croatian" Serbs (Krajina Serbs)
One third of Communist Designed Croatia - is Serbian land
Reading Western press one gets impression that the Serbs settled in Krajina recently. The media keeps calling these Serbs "Croatian Serbs" and says that the Serbs "occupied", "grabbed", "conquered", etc. this land. As evident from any major reference book the Serbs were invited to settle in Krajina in 1578. Ever since Krajina was independent and separate entity from Croatia. Only since 1941 (during Croat Nazi occupation) and after 1945 (during Croat Communist Tito's rule) was Krajina assigned to be part of Croatia. Having in mind that the first Pilgrims set sail (from Southamton) for America (in the ship named Mayflower) almost half a century later - in 1620 - one can conclude that the Krajina Serbs have more right to the land they were expelled from (after NATO supported Croat attack) then the white Americans have on the land they reside on.
Where is Krajina:
The following map of Krajina appears in the book "Yugoslavia - A Country Study" issued by U.S. Government Printing Office, Headquarters - Department of the Army, Edition 1992, page 14.

One of the best, my personal favourite and in my opinion a must-have item for everyone coming to Croatia is The Rough Guide to Croatia. Ingeniously written by Jonathan Bousfield, who's been making regular visits to Croatia since 1975, this 460-page guidebook brings not only the comprehensive coverage of numerous destinations, informative and reliable info about transport possibilities and accommodation / restaurants / nightlife options but also a very authorative background on Croatia's history, culture and politics. It will give you a brief insight about different cuisines of Croatia's regions, tips where to have the best Saturday morning coffee or tips how to survive with names of streets that change in Croatian. Learn about Croatian history - from who was Diocletian and why he retired himself to the story of Uskoks, history of Hajduk soccer club or the facts about the creation of Non-Aligned Movement on Brijuni islands. There is also a lot of info about recent history, with background info of Serbian rebelion, details about siege of Vukovar and shelling of Dubrovnik as well as of the authorative Tudjman regime and its opponents, including the Radio 101 and Feral Tribune newspaper.

There were no reports of anti-Semitic incidents in Croatia in 1998.
Nevertheless, despite assurances by the regime to the contrary, the worrying
trend toward rehabilitation of the country's wartime fascist past continued.
In this context, a controversial figure in Croatian history, Zagreb Archbishop

The Federation of Jewish Communities is responsible for Jewish religious and cultural life, while local and international Jewish groups are active in educational activities for youth and other community needs. Introduction
Former 'New York Times' columnist Leslie Gelb wrote in 1991 that "Croatia is known more for its fascists than for its democrats". Ironically, 'The New York Times' may be contributing more to the promotion of the idea of Croats as fascists than any other Western medium. Its narrow focus on Croatia's history, repeated emphasis on the negative elements and exclusion of the positive, has become an issue of serious concern to the Croatian Anti- Calumny Project. 'The New York Times' has consistently reported on Croatian history in a simplistic manner, portraying Croatia within the framework of its World War II Nazi puppet regime, exactly in the way that Belgrade's war propagandists would have it portrayed. 'The New York Times' consistently refers to the traditional Croatian checkered coat of arms as a fascist symbol, just as Belgrade propagandists do, knowing very well that the letter "U", and not the checkered shield, was the unique symbol of the Nazi puppet regime.

A Short Survey of Croatian History Croatia is located in southeastern Europe and extends along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. This area makes up littoral Croatia . The Dinaric mountains extend parallel to the Adriatic coast, and this area is called Dinaric Croatia. In the north, Croatia comprises a large part of the Pannonian plains, and this region is called Pannonian Croatia . All three regions comprise a geographic unity, and the diversity of Croatia is such that the areas complement each other. Today the majority of the Croatian ethnic territory is administratively and politically included in two republics: SR Croatia and SR Bosnia and Herzegovina. Both of these republics comprise an entity historically, culturally, linguistically and economically. Their area is 107,667 km and their population is 8,692,000, according to the 1981 census. Historians and anthropologists trace the first home of the Croatians to a region called "Harauvat-is" located in present-day Afghanistan. 500 B.C.

About the exhibition: Both idea and realization of the exhibition 1848 in Croatia stem from the fact that the Croatian History Museum has a very large collection of material which might be called “authentic witness” of a period that was a turbulent watershed in Croatian history. Much of it has never in recent times been seen by the public. One whole section, in conformity with museum and collection practice is militaria , it shows collections of weapons, flags, uniforms, military orders. In this exhibition the Croatian History Museum is making its contribution to a whole gamut of cultural and historical exhibitions organized by European museums to mark the 150 th anniversary of the revolutionary change that took place in this part of Europe. More than three hundred exhibits are presented in seven groups the aim of which is to show the various streams that came together to form the 1848 movement in Croatia

The middle and the second half of the 19 th century in Central Europe was marked by the formation of nations and national programmes; this period in Croatia was socially and politically characterised by the National Revival, the rule of Ban Josip Jelacic, an the Bach regime. Through the establishment of scientific disciplines and greater knowledge, this age of enlightenment and romanticism saw the founding of numerous societies and professional associations, the creation of many scientific and cultural institutions, as well as new publications. In some places museum were founded early in the 19 th century; for example, the National Museum in Budapest was founded in 1808, and this was followed by museums in Prague in 1818, in Split in 1820, and in Zadar in 1830. The need for having a similar general museum in Zagreb had certainly matured in the first half of the 19 th It is interesting to note that the first contribution for the museum raised already in 1828 through the work of the Law School, which was at that time the highest scientific institution in Zagreb.
