The first known inhabitants of Korcula were Illyrian tribes who occupied a large area of Dalmatia. They lived from farming and fishing. It is still possible to see on the Island their stone burial mounds, roughly shaped as a blunt cone.
Upon the arrival of the Ancient Greeks, Korcula became a Greek colony
However, they made no attempts to intergrate with the Illyrians, who continued both their tribal lifestyle and their separate existence. It seems that the Greeks never associated themselves with the Ilyrians, possibly due to Illyrians being percieved as a part of a lower social standing.
An important document from this period is a stone tablet called 'the psephism from Lumbarda
Several centuries later, in 7th century AD, the

The name Croatia is derived from that of a people called Croats ( Hrvat, Chrobatos Velika Hrvatska Chrisitianity flourished in Illyria, Dalmatia, and the other provinces before the coming of the Croats. At the time of migration the Croats were heathens; they did not accept Christianity until the seventh century, when they and the Serbs were baptized by priests of the Roman Church. The Croats promised the pope to live in peace with other nations and he, in turn, to help them in case an enemy invaded their territory. Pope John IV (640-42) sent the Abbot Martin to the Croatians, and St. Martin I commissioned John of Ravenna to evangelize this vigorous and adventurous nation. He created John Archbishop of Salona (Solin), a city of Roman culture, whence, owing to the invasion of the Croats, many moved to the neighbouring Spalato. Here John laboured also, and the imperial mausoleum in the palace of

History The official American presence in Zagreb goes back at least to 1920, when the American Consulate in Zagreb, Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, was established. The Consulate remained open in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia until World War II began. At that time, the records indicate that American diplomatic personnel departed between May 1 and 14, 1941, in response to the German capture of Zagreb, and subsequent establishment of the Nezavisna Država Hrvatska (the fascist Ustašha government). ... However, problems remained. For example, in textbooks the history of the former Yugoslavia has been omitted in favor of a more nationalistic Croat interpretation, and new textbooks have used derogatory adjectives in reference to minorities. Government pledges to provide more balanced textbooks went unfulfilled. In July the Education Minister directed five county prefects outside the Danubian region to survey their students to determine how many would be interested in classes conducted in Serbian. [Intro] [ Brod na Savi Bridge Sava River From Granik to Granik
In the seventies of the 19th century, Brod na Savi (Brod on Sava River), with 3.398 inhabitants was a small muddy and dusty town of decreasing importance, the small town of handicraftsmen and farmers, with no industry and traffic connections with the other parts of Croatia.
Only twice a week, the boats of C.K. - Vienna privileged steamship company connected Zemun and Sisak with Brod, on the mid route, on Sunday from Sisak, on Wednesday from Zemun. Their thick smoke was seen from Poloj and from the mouth of Sava, and when the beared captain strongly pulled the steam-powered fife, the crowds of barefooted children ran to the shore to the Agency, to see "Galatea" and "Czigo" boats. The middle class in Brod was in a forming process. Their main representatives were handicraftsmen and traders, most of them Germans and the Tzintzars. The commercial register from 1878. had noted 86 traders in Brod, and the tradesman,s register from year 1877. 233 tradesmen. The "opanak"-makers were the majority. And then, it came the demilitarization of Vojna Krajina (1873), two years after the abolition of the free Brod military komunitet and the proclamation of Brod na Savi, a town (1871), the occupation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the shift of the boarder from Sava to Drina.
General count Josip Filipoviæ took Brod na Savi for a starting point from which he pontooned to Bosnia. In these days Brod was full of army. The old fortress, built during Karlo VIth has already been let out to the traders of Brod for storehouses, revived the days or glory again.

A Hrvstako Dombranstvo (Home Defense or Home Army) was formed. Many of the officers had been in the Yugoslavian military. Some German tanks and Hungarian CV 33 and CV 35 tankettes (originally purchased from Italy ) were supplied. By November 1941 the forces were expanded to 6 divisions, and by the end of the war they reached 16 divisions. Most were unreliable as desertion was quite high. Want to learn about a new vehicle? Across the coastal regions of Croatia, there are many monuments from early medieval times, dating from the periods of Late Antiquity to the Romanesque. This historic epoch in Europe has left us with little authentic monuments. However, this period is a very important part of the history of Croatian architecture and art. A hundred churches from Istria to Boka Kotorska bay are evidence of the Early Croatian artistic expression. In 1918, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became an independent communist state under the strong hand of Marshal TITO. Although Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, it took four years of sporadic, but often bitter, fighting before occupying Serb armies were mostly cleared from Croatian lands. Under UN supervision the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was returned to Croatia in 1998.

The first Scout units were established in late 1913 and 1914. The Scout Association of Croatia has been a co-founder of the World Organization of the Scout Movement in 1922.
Scouting almost vanished as a result of World War I. The Scout Association of Croatia was kept alive by being members of the Scout Association of the Kingdom of Jugoslavia, which was dictated by the law at the time. Although Croatian Scouts have been dropped from the membership rolls of WOSM in 1951, the organization did not stop its work. When communism fell in 1989, Croatia declared itself an independent nation and received recognition by numerous western nations. The Scout Association of Croatia did likewise. According to the democratic changes in Croatia, The Scout Association of Croatia returned to its roots as voluntary non-political, educational organization for young people. It became fully prepared to meet their needs in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential as individuals. Their goals are to help the youth of Croatia become responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities. Varied activities in nature, challenges and adventures, contacts to different people and different cultures enable them to respect those differences as a precious heritage of mankind.

Having this in mind, we believe you will understand our wish to give you a better insight into what could be called a Croatian cultural heritage, at least in a rapid and sketchy way. The connections with other European cultures are, as you will see, deep and longstanding. We shall also try to intersperse this hypertext with some interesting facts by which Croatia is recognizable. In short, we start by describing an extremely complex and interesting entity, unique in Europe - the Republic of Croatia, or in Croatian - Republika Hrvatska HR

During the Napoleonic years, Dalmatia and western Croatia had been part of France's ILLYRIAN PROVINCES and seen many of the benefits of the French Revolution. Zagreb itself with eastern Croatia and Slavonia had remained under Austrian rule.
In 1813 the French were expelled and Habsburg rule restored. The Vienna Congress allocated previously Venetian Dalmatia, including Ragusa, to Austria.
As elsewhere in Europe, the French Revolution had awakened the spirit of nationalism and liberalism. Croat nationals demanded that Croatia-Slavonia (an annex to Hungary), Dalmatia and Istria would be joined (1825) to recreate the historical Kingdom of Croatia, a step the Austrian administration in Vienna was keen to avoid.
In 1825 the Diet of Hungary and Croatia was assembled after 13 years of absolute Habsburg rule; the Hungarian nobility (dominating the diet) demanded the introduction of Hungarian as language of education in all lands of the Hungarian crown - which included Croatia, a measure fiercely opposed by the Croatians.
In 1829 a group of intellectuals from various national background emphasized the common basis of the languages of the southern Slav peoples (Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, Macedonians, Bulgarians), in the language of the time referred to as Illyrian. The most prominent figure was LJUDEVIT GAJ. Due to the historical development and complex geography, there were three regional, distinct dialects of the Croatian language alone. Gaj and his soulmates developed an orthography based on the Stokavski dialect, written in the Latin alphabet. While the concept of a standard language for all the south Slavs failed to gain the acceptance of the Serbs, Bulgarians and Macedonians, who stuck to the Cyrillic alphabet, and of the Slovenes, the 'Illyrian' grammar and orthography gained acceptance in Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia and thus formed the foundation of modern Croatian.
