In Croatian literature, for example, there are just a few exceptional novelists and playwrights, but many great poets. The tradition of Croatian art in the twentieth century is rich in experimental music, abstract and constructivist painting, sculpture and many other disciplines involving small tribes of educated intellectual insiders. But Croatia's modern cultural history, with few exceptions, seriously lacks populist impulses. Croatian film has had a similar destiny. Where Croatia has succeeded most is not with the "ordinary" feature film, as during the four post-World War II decades, but, rather, Croatia is known to be a strong source of experimental and alternative cinema and, more specifically, an animated film super power. Keeping up with the cartoons The so-called Zagreb cartoon school, which reached its peak between 1957 and 1968, is widely considered one of the most important modernist European animated film schools, and Zagreb director Dušan Vukotić (1927-98) was the first European to win an Oscar for film animation for his 1961 film

RUSSIAN CULTURE DAYS OPEN IN CROATIA
Russian Culture Days are set to open in Croatia Saturday. Sources in the Croatian Culture Ministry said the event is the first of its kind to be organized in the country since Russia and Croatia established diplomatic relations.
The Days will kick off with a gala concert attended by the country's President, Stjepan Mesic, and other leaders.
Culture Minister Mikhail Shvydkoi leads the Russian delegation.
A total of 80 people have travelled to Croatia from Russia as part of the delegation to the Culture Days. The program includes performances by the Moskovia orchestra, Beryozka dance troupe, and some soloists. In addition, the festival will feature a Russian Cinema Week and an exhibit of photos depicting the Russian way of life.
Three cities are to play host to the Culture Days events: the country's capital - Zagreb, Rijeka, and Virovitica.

    October 18, 2000
It is a pleasure to visit Zagreb and Croatia. Many of my constituents in Edmonton are of Croatian origin and I have attended many Croatian cultural events. I have learned about Croatian culture, folklore and the success and stories of Croatians and of Canadians of Croatian origin. The Croatian culture is strong and vibrant in Edmonton and throughout Canada. I am here meeting to assist with the development and increase business contacts, trade and investment between Croatia and Canada. Even since the most difficult days of the early 1990s trade between our two countries has existed and has been increasing. During this period, various Croatian products such as Vegata, Kras chocolates and wines have been and are available in Canada. At the same time, oil and gas equipment, even from my own constituency, and other products have been exported to Croatia.

Institutions, Culture and Identity, Nationalism, and the Built Heritage Croatia: Study Abroad Maymester 2006 (May 16- June 7) The Program: The focus of Croatia 2006 will be the tangible and intangible cultural elements of Croatia that help shape who Croatians are and where they see themselves in the context of Europe and European history. We will look at politics, history and elements of culture that shape Croatian society including language, literature, art, music, and architecture. We will examine how Croatians are preserving and using their heritage. The program will provide an opportunity for students to learn first-hand about Croatia's transition to democracy and renewed sense of national identity. It will use active engagement approaches that will take students into different regions and provide them with the opportunity to talk directly with Croatian faculty, non-profit leaders, and citizens from different walks of life. Participants will see and experience life in Croatia during this time of transition and social stress. All of the elements of the program will be designed to maximize the interaction of students with Croatians and to immerse students into the culture of Croatia. These experiences will be supplemented by readings that will provide context for student-Croatian meetings.

Culture in Croatia During the Transition Period
When Andrea Zlatar investigates the contemporary and recent history of Croatian culture and cultural policy she finds out that the most horrifying consequence of the transition and war is not the material impoverishment of Croatian society, but the utter destruction of value systems that used to apply to specific fields of human activity. Introduction Although there are many divergent opinions on Croatian culture of the nineties, and different material and spiritual traces, only one analytical document has appeared - Cultural Policy in Croatia, National Report , written for the European Programme of National Cultural Policy Reviews. This document was written in the mid-nineties, during 1996 and 1997, and it was published in 1998, in Croatian and English editions. A brief report written by a group of European cultural policy experts and entitled Croatian Cultural Policy: From Barriers to Bridges was published that same year. National Report, written under the supervision of project director Dr. Vjeran Katunariç, a sociologist of culture, was greeted by the Council of Europe as an exemplary document of its kind. The report shows that Croatian authors' views coincide in all essential points with the European criteria for understanding the place and role of culture in a specific society, and the awareness of the manifold nature of cultural policy in contemporary world, which should serve to

is a country with exceptional natural beauty , a rich culture and tradition as well as ecological preserved regions. The northern part has continental climate, in the mountains it is alpine and in the Adriatic region has Mediterranean climate. The Mediterranean coast has a length of 1800 km and presents with its subtropical vegetation and the steel blue water against the background of the mountain chains a breathtaking panorama. 1185 offshore islands invite to charming excursions. Especially the Island Korcula is a must if you are in this region. Korcula is a charming city on the island of the same name and is also called the "little sister of Dubrovnik", as both cities are very much alike because of their common Venice past. However aside from the all the tourist sights and attractions, which make the branch increasingly flourishing, this country still suffers from the aftermath of the war for independence against Yugoslavia and the living standard of the people is accordingly poor. The tourism is the main source of income; thus they do very best to make vacation for their guests most enjoyable and unforgettable beautiful.
    Dubrovnik
is a seaport and health resort with a remarkable history. As a merchant republic, which had its heydays in the 15th century, Dubrovnik traded with Turkey and India, had trade representatives in Africa and even had diplomatic relations with the English court in the middle ages. In this way the city was a serious rival against the powerful and rich Venice, which finally gained sovereignty over Dubrovnik from 1206-1358. Thus the old town presents unmistakable features of Venetian architecture.
