Last Update: April 2003 Theories of Social Change and Social Liberation Marxian Theory and Social Change in India (and the subcontinent) Introduction Ever since Marx first espoused his socio-political theories, his writings have attracted both die-hard supporters, and the severest of critics. But it was the unexpected victory of the Bolsheviks in Russia that led to the worldwide dissemination of his writings and to the strength of the social and political phenomenon that is broadly denoted as "Marxism'. However, the disintegration of the Soviet Union has led to the growing marginalization of Marxist currents. Marxian concepts and theories of social change (or social criticism derived from the writings of Marx, or other Marxists) have become exceedingly suspect. Whereas some social scientists have rejected the entire body of Marxist writings, others have placed them under the microscope and attempted to expose numerous flaws in Marx's view of world history. Some Indian critics of Marx have seized the moment by vehemently attacking the indelible strain of eurocentricism that plagued much of his writings (especially those concerning India, and the highly flawed theory of "Asian Despotism"). Internalized eurocentricism was a weakness that not only infected Marx, but virtually all the social scientists that grew up in an environment where European supremacy, or the centrality and universality of the European experience was taken for granted - even by very radical social critics. Although this has always been an impediment to the wider dissemination of Marxist ideas amongst certain sections of the Afro-Asian intelligentsia, the demise of the Soviet Union has only added to the burden of Marxists - especially those who (even as they identify with the essence and spirit of Marx's constructs), are deeply demoralized and plagued with gnawing doubts about the continued validity of the Marxian approach.

How To Write Reviews and Critiques
What is a review?
A review is defined as a "critical article or report, as in a journal, on a book, play, recital or the like." A critique is defined as "an article or essay criticising a literary or other work" (Random House Dictionary of the English Language) A review serves two major functions - descriptive and evaluative: it indicates to the reader some general idea of the contents and it offers an evaluation of the merit of the work. The overall purpose of a book or article review is to interest and inform potential readers and to give them a considered personal opinion of a work. It should evaluate the work from your perspective rather than simply summarising or describing the work's content.
Reading the Book/Article
Carefully read the whole book at least once (henceforward book is used for all items being reviewed), including the preface, introduction and cover (which often gives the reasons for its being written, who it was aimed at and background information about the author.) Take note as you read and consider some or all of the following points:
  • What was the purpose in writing this book, for whom was it written and is it appropriate to its audience?

Five Considerations before Joining a Crit Group
by Terry W. Ervin II Below are five areas to consider before taking the plunge and joining a crit group. 1. Motivated Writers Being around other writers can be infectious, but if one is going to spend time with a group of writers for support, insight, and advice, the focus should be the discussion of writing produced by group members. The writers in a crit group should have goals, and each member should be actively working to achieve those goals. A goal may be as simple as finishing a novel by a certain date, or achieving the submission of three short stories for publication by the New Year. 2. Minimum Requirements

Southwest Writers offers both members and non-members professional critiques of manuscripts at a price far below the usual market cost per page. Professional authors and editors critique your work with thoughtful, constructive insights with a quick turnaround. This process includes comprehensive, general feedback on your writing style and ability, as well as a detailed analysis of your work. We also offer specific suggestions for improving and marketing your manuscript. The critique for fiction includes a review of voice, plot, theme, conflict, pacing, hook, characters, setting, dialogue and structure. A nonfiction critique includes an analysis of hook, premise, slant, content, conclusions, voice, point of view, pacing and structure.
    Why You Should Submit
If you are a beginning writer, your work is likely to gain more serious attention from potential editors and/or publishers if it has been professionally critiqued. Most writers send their stories and novels to family members and friends. This type of feedback and encouragement, from people you trust, is entirely valid and immensely important to the fragile muse of a novice writer. But when you start thinking about submitting your work for publication, an objective, thorough critique from a qualified professional can mean the difference between writing a manuscript and actually selling it. A professional critique will not guarantee publication, but it will give you honest, constructive feedback on what's good about your writing and what you need to work on to make it better. Once you have this vital information, you can find other resources, such as books, audio tapes, college courses and even online tutorials and workshops to help sharpen your skills in these developing areas. In addition, SWW offers monthly meetings free of charge to members and non-members on a variety of topics to help you become the writer you want to be.

Part 1: The Theory of Critiquing
Who are these people telling me what to write?
    (Defining a Critiquer's Role)
Critiquing is a frightening experience for many, whether they have done it once or a thousand times. The Critiquer is going to tell someone else how to fix a story, and that means he has to know more than the writer, at least in some aspects. Many of us are writers just like the person whose story we are reading. So what makes anyone think that they're capable of fixing someone else's story? We can't. We can only offer pieces of advice to show where we think there could be improvement. Never start a critique believing that you are going to fix the material. That's not your job. Both you and the person whose story you read will deal with this process far better if you think in terms of advice. Generally people will find that there are two different types of critiquers. The first is the one you don't want to be and you don't want have look at your work. This is the 'agenda' critiquer, who will tell you exactly what's wrong with your story and how to fix it often without reading the full work. Agenda Critiquers have so rigid a set of rules that the story itself is of little importance, as long as it follows their definitions of rules.
