The Why: The Search Criteria: Note: Follow my own critique experiences, and those of others, in the examples below. Thanks to everyone who contributed information. However, due to space concerns, I had to trim some of the information provided. Face-to-face Critique Groups: Many writers form groups that meet in person on a regular basis. Small groups can meet in cafes, at private homes, local libraries, or during sunny days in the park. Join the SCBWI Examples:

In the early '90s I took a University of California extension class from the wonderful children's book illustrator Daniel San Souci. Some of his more serious students started meeting once a week and sharing work, making suggestions, and offering critiques. After a while, we dropped to once every two weeks, then once a month. We usually met at a cafe, but occasionally we met at an event, or at each other's homes. We had different styles, but enjoyed sharing work and encouraging each other.

See, "The Dirty Cowboy" was a true story supposedly reported by my great-grandfather (known in my family as Yi-Yi) in a newspaper called The Silver City Enterprise The story went something like this (and it was about this long): his cowboy. So no matter what the cowboy did, the dog would not let the cowboy take those clothes. The story goes that the cowboy had to walk bare-naked all the way back home. This was our favorite story. Brecht and his Friends: Writing as Critique
Amitava Kumar
September 22. First day of class. Fourteen in the morning class; sixteen in the afternoon one. Hand out the syllabus with course requirements. Spend most of the time discussing Brecht. Just three lines: "Ah, what an age it is / When to speak of trees is almost a crime / For it is a kind of silence about injustice." The point, of course, is not whether we speak of trees but the uses of our doing so. In other words, let's ask howrather, whywe speak about anything September 23. Writing cognition contestation I have these three words on the syllabus for today. I have a picture from an essay by Michele Barrett. It shows a billboard, an ad for a Fiat, which reads, "If it were a lady, it would get its bottom pinched." Beneath it, someone has spray-painted the words, "If this lady was a car she'd run you down." The students have ten minutes to respond. In the second class, three men sitting together chuckle at the picture. The women, almost uniformly, are angered by the ad. One of them, while reading out her response, explains that she is angry " because she is a woman." This happens a few times. I wonder whether this is because the students are nervous about the male instructor's response to what they so strongly feel. Later, I'm unable to decide whether I should have shared this point with my students; at that moment, I am only able to address the point obliquely by agreeing with a couple of the students that the person who spray-painted the protest could have been a woman

Q uite unlike the ordinary meaning of the word, argument I n short, the writer of an argument essay has several goals: the primary goals is to persuade and move the audience to accept his/her position on an issue, but that is often a very difficult challenge. A secondary, and more modest goal, is for the writer to articulate why s/he chooses the stance that s/he does on an issue. The secondary goal recognizes the fact that to persuade is a difficult objective but that at least the writer can explain his/her reasoning behind his/her position.
Writing Guidelines
F or those reasons, many rhetoricians describe the argument as a dialog, set in writing, between the writer and the readers. In this dialog, the writer introduces his/her subject, makes his/her claim, discusses any necessary background information, and then presents the evidence for the position and in rebuttal to other positions. W riters use different patterns to organize their thoughts as they compose the argument. Essentially, the two most common patters of development are the "clustering" and the "alternating" patterns of presenting evidence. In the clustering pattern, the writer collects the evidence in one place, the objections in another section, and the rebuttal in a third section. In the alternating pattern, the writer shifts between evidence, objection, and rebuttal for each separate piece of evidence before moving to the next piece of evidence.

Writer's Tips: joining a critique group, pro and cons
Many writers find support and constructive criticism by joining a writing circle.
Perhaps the one trait that all writers share, regardless of genre or reputation, is the need for constructive criticism. We all would like to know if our latest project is headed in the right direction artistically or our newest assignment is meeting the desired needs of the editor or publisher. Without some form of criticism, writers often find themselves floundering in a sea of rewrites and revisions. Self-doubt may also cloud a writer's vision without some positive or negative feedback to guide them through the rough spots. Clearly a more objective opinion is needed at every stage of the writing process, but where can a writer find such willing and able assistance? PRO: A good writers' group will tell you what you NEED to hear, not what you may WANT to hear. Many writers who haven't established professional ties with other writers often seek criticism and advice from friends and relatives whose enthusiasm may exceed their objectivity. While a fledgling writer may enjoy the strokes and praises of an admiring reader, he or she may also feel the need for an honest evaluation by someone more established in the writing business. This is the strong suit of a good writers' circle. If an established, skilled writer reads your manuscript and offers positive feedback, you can rest assured that your work does indeed have some merit. Conversely, any negative information gathered in a good writers' group is usually constructive and fair. Better to hear bad news from friends and colleagues now rather than collect rejection slips later from hard-nosed publishers.

Overview
As with the learning of any skill, getting feedback on your writing is ... well, "critical," and the Workshop is designed with this in mind. Our critique services make it easy to get personalized feedback quickly, while the writing is still fresh in your mind . Most importantly, your work is analyzed by Tom and his staff writers, all of whom have studied with him for years. So the evaluation and suggestions are geared to the principles taught in the Workshop Series curriculum . And in case you're the sensitive type (as writers often are), don't worry! Here at the Workshop we focus on the constructive part of the term "constructive criticism."
There are two types of critique service available:
  • critiques of exercises assigned in the course modules on CD-ROM, and
  • critiques of your own essays, short stories, novellas, etc.
In either case, you receive an email document that includes clear, concise and constructive notes. The critiques are designed to highlight the things you're doing well, while giving you pragmatic suggestions for sharpening your skills where there's room for improvement. Take a look at the critique sample to see how this process can turn a rough short story into a polished, publishable piece.

Writing Critique
Contributed by Bart Johnson, Landscape Architecture One of the essential ingredients of good research is the ability to communicate clearly and concisely through whatever media you use. Writing is usually the prime mode of communication, or at the least an essential component. Every writer can improve his/her writing style and everyone can benefit from thoughtful critique. In this exercise, we ask you to help each other by critiquing the papers you have exchanged, not only for content, but for composition and style using critieria described in Strunk and White, chapter 2, Elementary Principles of Composition. Be sure to read over chapter 2 carefully and then critique the paper you have received for Strunk and White items 12-18, using the form on this page. Writing Critique of Assignment 1 Your Name:

What is the Critters Workshop?
Critters is an on-line workshop/critique group for serious writers of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror. You get your work critiqued in exchange for critiquing the work of others, both of which are invaluable ways to improve your writing. It's run by Dr. Andrew Burt , currently vice-president of SFWA , and his army of software minions. Critters is free (except for the work of doing critiques!); if you find Critters useful, you may make a donation (appreciated but in no way required).
Want to know more?
A more detailed description is here . Here is a brief description of what it's like to send a manuscript through the workshop, including some sample critiques, and here are what some of our members think about Critters.
