Her plays have provided a showcase for local actors as well as nationally known and accomplished performers including Julie Harris, Tyne Daly, Sharon Gless, Mike Nussbaum and Studs Terkel.
Though she has lived in Chicago for much of her adult life, she retains a midwestern accent and an unpretentious manner that suggest her roots in Clare, Michigan.
In a recent conversation with Ms. Allen, I asked her why she prefers drama as a form of expression over such other forms as the novel or the short story.
"I don’t absolutely, never write short stories," she said. "But I can’t sit in a chair and watch people read a short story or a novel. It doesn’t get me going in quite the same way. I like to sit back and watch the actors and the audience. I like the collaborative aspect of the theater.
"Every once on a while, I get the urge to write a short story but it usually becomes a play."

    — By Michel Fortin Dear Friend, If your sales copy stinks, then you can learn how to double, triple, even quadruple your response rate simply by watching a million-dollar copywriter in action as he cranks out hard-hitting copy that sells like crazy. You see, learning how to write copy is easy. You can buy all the courses, attend all the seminars and read all the ebooks. But the "learning" part is not the problem. It's in the understanding Learning how to think like a million-dollar copywriter so you consistently mutate every salesletter, every email, every website you touch into an eyeball-grabbing, sales-sucking machine is a whole other ball of wax. My name is Michel Fortin. If you don't know me, it's because for years I've worked behind the scenes writing copy for many of the most successful direct and Internet marketers in the world. One of my salesletters produced over $1.08 million in sales in just the first 18 hours of its launch. Another generated $889,218 in under 24 hours. Recently, I've put together a private website where I share my most prized copywriting secrets and tips. Best of all, I do it "live" on video.

Basking in the support of people who love you is one matter. Being schooled by other writers who have a feel for the business is another. Getting critiques online is one of the easiest and best ways to start your first semester. Finding groups of people who would like to exchange opinions about each other's writing is simple. If you subscribe to a writer's newsletter, they may publish a list of internet critique groups to get you started. As e-zines become more numerous, those focusing on writing can also point you to critique groups. Friends you've already made in cyberspace might recommend others. Not to mention the excellent list at the end of this article! So the real challenge isn't in finding lists, but in not joining too many. Almost every list has a target audience. I recommend joining one or two that specialize in the type of writing you do and go from there.

    Step 1. Analyze the text

    Step 2. Evaluate the text

Step 3. Plan and write your critique
When college professors ask you to write a critique of a text, they usually expect you to analyze and evaluate, not just summarize. A summary merely reports what the text said; that is, it answers only the question, "What did the author say?" A critique, on the other hand, analyzes, interprets, and evaluates the text, answering the questions how? why? and how well? A critique does not necessarily have to criticize the piece in a negative sense. Your reaction to the text may be largely positive, negative, or a combination of the two. It is important to explain why you respond to the text in a certain way.
    Step 1. Analyze the text
As you read the book or article you plan to critique, the following questions will help you analyze the text:
    • What is the author's main point? What is the author's purpose? Who is the author's intended audience? What arguments does the author use to support the main point?

  • Content: Consider the topic (its appropriateness and interest for the assignment as well as a clear focus suitable to essay length) and the way the topic is developed (clarity sufficiency of its argument, its scope, subcategories, amount and type of examples, anecdotes, evidence, etc.).
  • Organization : Consider how the essay is introduced and concluded (especially looking for a "frame" to the essay, where the intro and conclusion refer to the same idea), whether the thesis is located in the most helpful place (direct or implied), how the essay is structured, whether the order or extent of development is successful, as well as how individual paragraphs are organized (clear topic sentences, appropriate and concrete evidence, logical organization of evidence).
  • Style: Style can refer to the overall style of an essay: whether the tone is appropriate (humorous, serious, reflective, satirical, etc.), whether you use sufficient and appropriate variety (factual, analytical, evaluative, reflective), whether you use sufficient creativity. Style can also refer to the style of individual sentences: whether you use a variety of sentences styles and lengths, whether sentences are worded clearly, and whether word choice is interesting and appropriate.

Do I Recommend that New Writers Join Writing Groups?
D epends. There are lots of reasons people want to be in a writing group. Some people want a friendly, supportive atmosphere which will help them build the self-confidence to continue writing or to try getting published. A writing group can help with this. Some people need for someone else to set their deadlines, so that they can complete projects they would otherwise put off or abandon. Writing groups can be structured to do this. Some people want a test group of readers on which to try out their stories. A writing group certainly provides this. However, some people want professional-level critique and editing to help them prepare a manuscript for publishing. I have not personally seen or read about any writing groups which offer this service to their members.
