  • Percy Principle #1 Avoid a sore thumb . Nothing in the composition should be so strong that the rest of the composition looks neglected. When you have a sore thumb, you don't notice the rest of your hand. Avoid the SORE THUMB . I study my composition to see if anything looks too important, I change that part to make it less important, OR I find something else in the composition and make it more important.
    Percy Principle #2 Keep everything connected. Every aspect of the composition should be connected to something else in the composition. I think of this as Theme With Variation. If I use a big red circle, perhaps I need another circle or another red or another big thing. I probably should not have another big red circle. If I use a black and white cow, I may need another animal or organic shape, or I may need another instance of black and white spots, etc., and so on.
    Percy Principle #3 - Include Secrets. Artwork is more interesting and expressive if it has hidden features and ideas that it only reveals to diligent observers. The popular arts , by contrast with fine art , make everything obvious at first glance.

As the Vermont MIDI Project approaches its tenth anniversary many lessons have been learned about music composition with students. Teachers in the Vermont MIDI Project know composition is a process involving multiple steps. Teaching composition is certainly more than learning how to use software or simply asking students to "create something". The following details of the process come from the collective thoughts of project participants as they strive to define their work with students.
Composition in the classroom in Vermont MIDI Project schools generally involves entire music classes. It often begins in third or fourth grade where students have access to notation software in the computer lab or music classroom. Students in the elementary and middle levels work in pairs or groups of three to create their original work. At the high school level, students usually work as individuals, often in a theory/composition class. Composition is gradually making its way into instrumental and vocal ensemble classes. Successful strategies for composition have been developed by project teachers and by the professional composer mentors.

Reflection and Critique in the Classroom
In a comprehensive music program, each aspect of the program informs the rest. Students bring to their compositions all of the musical experiences that they have, including singing, playing instruments, movement, improvisation, music literacy, exposure to different cultures and styles of music, as well as their personal preferences. If reflection and critique are a part of the culture of a classroom, with students critiquing their own and others' work, their ability to listen, analyze and describe music (National Standard #6) and to evaluate music and music performances (National Standard #7) is enhanced, and this in turn enriches their compositions.
Reflection and critique are skills that must be taught. They must be planned, guided by the teacher in the classroom and practiced. As students compose with technology, many for the first time, they are awash in possibilities and excited to be creating. Focusing on specific musical elements gives a direction and form to their compositions.

Little wonder, then, that a collective sense of what constitutes responsible scholarship remains fairly vague. Under the heading of "history," composition scholars may advance ideological arguments that ignore dissent. There are a variety of rules involved in the good composition of a photo. Some basic rules include "the rule of thirds", the "compositional triangle", the "circular composition", "leading lines", the "frame within a frame", "rhythm" and "negative space".
So what are all these rules? If you don't know what they are or how they work, then I suggest you take the time to read this lesson from Jodie Coston's class. She talks in layman's terms and shows examples along the way, making it very easy to grasp and apply.
Okay, so why do we need compositional rules?

Writing is usually the prime mode of communication, or at the least an essential component. Every writer can improve his/her writing style and everyone can benefit from thoughtful critique. In this exercise, we ask you to help each other by critiquing the papers you have exchanged, not only for content, but for composition and style using critieria described in Strunk and White, chapter 2, Elementary Principles of Composition. Contact Information Since the early 1990s, the "social turn" in composition studies has produced a growing body of provocative scholarship that seeks to unpack the connections between discourse and politics, language and power, representation and social agency. In books as varied as Left Margins, Reclaiming Pedagogy, Composition and Resistance, Social Issues in the English Classroom, Pedagogy in the Age of Politics , and Miss Grundy Doesn't Teach Here Anymore , compositionists have theorized how the writing classroom can become a site of both emergent political awareness and critique. With this in mind, however, Bruce McComiskey claims in Teaching Composition as a Social Process that many of the theories put forth in the above-mentioned books advocate for courses that are admittedly content-rich-but often at the expense of examining and integrating the writing process into the political critique. As McComiskey puts it, these books encourage the examination of "writing and texts as social and cultural phenomena, yet the pedagogies contained in these collections tend to focus more on the content rather than the language of reading and writing assignments" (86). Acknowledging the post-process critique that the writing-process movement may have (momentarily, at least) blinded students (and teachers) to examining the social and political content of their writing and composition processes, McComiskey nonetheless asserts the usefulness of process pedagogies, and he maintains throughout

The errors of inexperienced writers should be seen as the result of this effort to approximate and finally to control a complex and alien discourse. P orter, James, et. al. "Institutional Critique: A Rhetorical Methodology for Change." CCC Big Idea Institutions can be changed through rhetorical activism. Porter and company develop broad model for institutional critique driven by rhetoricians as agents for change and pomo geographical interrogations to stage institutional dynamics (needing change). The authors juxtapose "despair" as the unsatisfying alternative to a more hopeful and upbeat, even (re)visionary empowerment: the field must vigorously imagine its potential for changing institutions, for transforming them through language, and for thinking about rhetoric and writing as activisms beyond academe. The essay sets up a macro-micro paradigm for thinking about institutionality, then, invoking a model of "boundary interrogation," the space-made-over institutional critique ventures into the space between the macro-micro and into the "'zones of ambiguity,' or spaces that house change, difference or a clash of values or meanings." Wondering About My impression is that this article and the premise it advances are much more compelling due to the group authorship. A team-authored article suggests a formidable solidarity, a banding together of credibility and forcethe very sort of coordinated leverage that makes institutional critique possible. As I read the essay, I had questions about whose agency is staked in the critique. Is rhetorical-discursive institutional critique most potent when it is pressed by clearly recognized members of the institution?
