The Summer Philosophy Institute of Colorado is a project modeled from the goals of two highly succesful programs: The Institute for the Advancement o f Philosophy for Children, and Indiana University's Summer Philosophy Institute. The Institute of Philosophy for Children trains philosophers to teach children and instructs secondary education teachers in philosophy. Indiana University developed its Summer Philosophy Institute to expose high school students to philosophy and critical thinking skills in a one week residential program that also introduces students to college life. Both programs share the commitment to increasing critical thinking skills among secondary education students. SPICO is committed to the same general goals as these successful programs.

Philosophy in Canada: Questions and Answers
Prepared by The Canadian Philosophical Association
P hilosophical inquiry has a history of nearly three thousand years and is pursued in all cultures. Almost every institution of higher learning includes a programme in philosophy, where it is viewed as important for a well rounded education. Formal instruction in philosophy is also offered at pre-university levels in many countries and some provinces, including in Quebec's Colleges (CEGEPs) and, more recently, in Ontario's secondary schools. This document of the Canadian Philosophical Association replies to questions often put to philosophers about their profession.
1. What is Philosophy?
Philosophy is critical and creative thinking about fundamental questions, such as:
  • What is a worthwhile life? Is there sense to the universe?

Dear Student:
Welcome to your Instructional Internet-based course.
YOUR INSTRUCTOR: John A. Doyle, Ph.D. As your instructor, I will be assisting you throughout the course.
My educational background includes B.A. level studies in philosophy at All Hallows College, Dublin, Ireland; M.A. degree in counseling psychology from Loyola University Los Angeles; and a Ph.D. degree in Social Ethics from the University of Southern California. I am also a California licensed marriage, family and child counselor. Thinking is a common human experience; the challenge is to think well. Much of our thinking, left unexamined, is imprecise, biased, distorted, uninformed, or plain prejudiced. Yet the quality of our academic and everyday life is dependent upon the quality of our thought. The focus of this course will be to sharpen your thinking skills to where you can formulate issues and problems more clearly and precisely, and come to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions.
It is your responsibility to contact me by email (or telephone) when you need course information or assistance.

APA Committee on Pre-College Instruction in Philosophy
One Approach: Critical Thinking Skills
While there are many competing models for teaching philosophy, including traditional historical or philosophically thematic approaches, courses in critical thinking skills have been extremely popular in the past two decades. The Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) supports an inductive approach. On the premise that it is better to teach students to "do philosophy" than "study philosophy", IAPC challenges the assumption that philosophy classes must include all the "great names" and their vocabulary and theory. IAPC stresses the study of daily situations and the thinking skills and processes which individuals and groups must develop to solve problems. Two other organizations that promote critical thinking skills are the

Short history of Logic
If we take Logic to be the activity of drawing inferences (conclusions) from a body of information, then no doubt humans have been using logic for as long as they have been thinking, or at least consciously thinking. The first Neanderthal to formulate the thought "All members of the Cave-Bear clan are our enemies" along with "Thag is a member of the Cave-Bear clan" very likely put the 2 and the 2 together and reached the conclusion "Thag is our enemy". Nor is there any particular reason to suppose that the logic of these primitives was primitive logic that is, they probably drew logically correct conclusions from their data about as often as folks do nowadays (i.e. maybe 62.3% of the time). (Besides, chances are that natural selection quickly weeded out the Neanderthals who tended to draw the conclusion "Thag is our friend" from the above data!) On the other hand, if we take Logic to be the analysis of concepts involved in making inferences, and the identification of standards and patterns of correct inference, Logic can be traced only back to the days of Aristotle (350 years B.C. or so), with some parallel development in early Hindu writings. It's not clear that this increase in logical self-consciousness improved the accuracy of reasoning processes for humankind in general, but knowing what Aristotle knew about logic can definitely help you be a better reasoner.

Habermas and Critical Thinking
Ben Endres

Before explaining Habermas's theory, it is helpful to place his work in the context of recent social and ethical theories directed at problematizing the Enlightenment. Many philosophers have provided powerful critiques of the way that the Enlightenment's appeal to universal truth and reason in the name of freedom can lead to exclusion and oppression. These writers see themselves bringing to light the false pretensions of traditional conceptions of Truth and Reason. While Habermas acknowledges some of the oppressive tendencies in the Enlightenment tradition that postmodernists address, and rejects transcendental and idealistic accounts of reason, he wants to preserve a conception of reason that will enable the evaluation of social norms. He wants to provide some criteria for the arbitration of moral issues in order to avoid the extreme relativism that a complete renunciation of reason and truth might produce. Yet in order to avoid the pitfalls of traditional theories, Habermas's criteria for reasoning about normative issues must be grounded in historically defined human activity rather than ideal, transcendental systems of rules. Habermas attempts to provide criteria for ethical decisions that are grounded in contextually-defined human interaction through his argument for "discourse ethics." Discourse ethics consists essentially of a single abstract principle which underlies the pragmatic requirements of any argument. This central tenet of discourse ethics is that in order for any norm to be considered valid, it must meet the condition that: "all affected can accept the consequences and side effects its

"Kevin Possin (Winona State University) has developed a program for students in critical thinking courses with an aim of giving them as much assisted practice as they need to master informal logic skills.... Having sampled the program, I say that this project should be...put into the hands of as many...undergraduate students as possible. Developing and maintaining critical thinking skills is essential to our national health. Dr. Possin has produced a means to that end." Home Education Philosophy Health Education Health Fitness Resume Educational Philosophy HES 237 Learning is a lifelong process that requires knowledge and skills needed to adapt to our ever-changing society. As a learner, it is important to see the connection between education and vocational opportunities. To become a capable lifelong learner, education should center around three skills: critical thinking, effective communication, and the ability to incorporate such skills.
Critical thinking allows students to make educated decision. They should become aware of the many paths that derive from one problem. Critical thinking requires the students to think on their own, analyze problems, consider options, and make a well-informed decision. To improve critical thinking, the learner needs to experience life-like scenarios and practice problem solving. Knowledge is essential to critical thinking because it gives students more options and choices, which facilitates careful reasoning. Through active learning strategies, students can practice and evaluate critical thinking skills.
In order to solve problems successfully, critical thinking must coincide with effective communication. Being able to communicate is one of the most valuable life skills. It can be best attained through student centered learning and a relaxed, safe environment. When students work together, they learn to present ideas in a way that can be easily understood, and they practice listening skills. Working together teaches collaboration and helps students develop closer relationships. Communication, collaborative learning and critical thinking work together to create lifelong learners.
