New Brunswick Suicide Prevention Program
Introduction Suicide in New Brunswick is a fact of life. Approximately 100 New Brunswickers die by suicide each year. As in most other provinces, the risk of suicide is highest among men 20 to 40 years old, young people, seniors, and those who have lost a close friend or family member through suicide. The New Brunswick Mental Health Services Division recognizes three basic principles:
  • suicide is a social problem that has multiple causes; providing alternative ways of addressing psychological or physical suffering is an important responsibility; and resources and services to help vulnerable persons are available and accessible.
  • The New Brunswick Suicide Prevention Program mobilizes agencies and individuals that work provincially and locally. The goal of the program is to reduce New Brunswick’s suicide rate per 100,000 population, by increasing the population's awareness and improving access to services. A provincial committee was established in 1991 to advise the Mental Health Services Division on strategies to be developed, implemented, or reviewed with regard to suicide prevention. In addition, it engages in liaison and co-ordination at the provincial level in order to develop an optimum common approach.

      CRISIS INTERVENTION OF HOUSTON
What it is? Crisis Intervention of Houston provides 24-hour telephone and Web-based counseling, suicide prevention and intervention, links to community resources and community education.
How are funds used? United Way funding assists community education programs and the confidential Crisis Hotline. The hot line provides services to Spanish-speaking residents and teens as well as free emergency transportation to domestic-violence victims and people in need of mental health services.
Community education includes the Survivors of Suicide support group, youth suicide prevention programs and a crisis response team to help people after traumatic events.
Need: In 2002, 2,214 Texans committed suicide; suicide outnumbered homicide by a rate of 3 to 2, according to the Texas Department of Health. The Houston Area Suicide Prevention Coalition reports that suicide is the third leading cause of death for people age 15 to 24. The suicide rate in Texas is highest for people 75 and older.

Would you laugh it off? Would you assume that the threat was just a joke or a way of getting attention? Would you be shocked and tell him not to say things like that? Would you ignore it? If you reacted in any of those ways you might be missing an opportunity to save a life, perhaps the life of someone who is very close and important to you. You might later find yourself saying, "I didn't believe she was serious," or "I never thought he'd really do it." Suicide is a major cause of death among teenagers. Among 14 to 24 year olds in the United States, there are at least 18 completed suicides per day and over 6,500 per year. There are 57 attempts per hour and over 1,000 attempts per day. Although it is difficult to get an accurate count because many suicides are covered up or reported as accidents, suicide is now thought to be the second leading cause of death among young people.
