In 1970, Crisis Hotline was born with one phone line and a one-page list of referral agencies, a small group of volunteers were determined to provide 24-hour telephone crisis counseling and information. Both caller and volunteers were anonymous, one human being to another in a moment of need. Crisis Intervention of Houston continues to meet our mission to serve people in crisis by providing 24-hour telephone and web-based counseling; suicide prevention and intervention education; links to community resources; and community education. The goal of CIH is to serve persons in crisis and overcome the barriers to help due to fear, isolation, abuse, physical disability, health, language, age, income, location, problem type or timing of the crisis. Survivors of Suicide Losing a loved one through suicide is an especially devastating loss. The loved ones left behind (survivors) have a difficult array of emotions to overcome on their journey of grief. There are many reasons for this. First of all, the death is usually unexpected and sudden, even if the person had been talking about suicide in the past. The method is often violent and it is difficult for survivors to think about their loved one inflicting this violence on themselves. Unfortunately, suicide carries a stigma in our society, friends and family members are at a loss for knowing what to say. Then, of course, survivors are plagued with the constant questions of "Why did she or he do it?", "Why didn't I see it coming?", and "What could I have done to stop it?" For many people, losing a loved one to suicide causes a feeling of abandonment thinking, "My loved one chose to leave me!" All of these issues are difficult to deal with during the grieving process. Fortunately, the Houston area has a self-help/support group called "Survivors of Suicide" for family members and friends of persons who have completed suicide. This free and confidential group is sponsored by Crisis Intervention of Houston, Inc.
