A good time to study crime By Carolyn Kleiner Butler W The study of crime and punishment has come a long way from the Middle Ages notion that deviance is tied to demonic possession. Building on precedents going back to the 18th and 19th centuriesincluding Italian physician Cesare Lombroso's work on the biological roots of lawbreaking and French philosopher Emile Durkheim's sociological take that crime results from "anomie," or confusion about normsacademics in this country have historically studied the subject under the twin guises of sociology and political science. In the 1930s and 1940s, for example, sociologist Edwin Sutherland established the idea of "differential association," which suggests that criminal behavior is learned through social interactions, while in the early 1980s political scientist James Q. Wilson and coauthor George Kelling developed the influential "broken windows" theory, which ties the physical decay of a neighborhood to increased criminal behavior.

with a Criminal Justice Option
Different graduate programs in criminal justice have different emphases. There are programs that emphasize criminal justice policy, others that emphasize either law enforcement or corrections, and yet others that are research oriented. When you consider a graduate program, be sure to find out what their special emphasis is. Listed below are all the colleges and universities in the United States with graduate programs in criminal justice / criminology known to the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). You can email the ACJS and ask if they have the most recent listing. To speed your research, use these tips: Once you’ve arrived at the home page for the school you’re interest in, click on "Contact Us" or a similar email button and ask for a copy of their Graduate Catalog and tell them you want information on their criminal justice / criminology program. The WWW is nice, but a printed catalog is best. Then, at your leisure, you can investigate the nature of their program.
Then, while still on the school’s home page, click on a menu item that suggests "Departments" or "Academics" or, if there’s an option for a keyword search, type in "department" and GO. What I want you to do is to find is a listing of all the departments on campus.

Criminology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Criminology comprises the body of knowledge dealing with the causes and consequences of crime as a social phenomenon. Criminology also involves study of criminal behavior, and the impact of laws on human behavior (and vice versa). Though both deal with crime, criminology differs from criminal justice in that criminal justice focuses on the components of the justice system including police courts , and corrections Criminology is an inter-disciplinary field; criminologists may have degrees in criminology, criminal justice sociology psychology economics ... anthropology , and others. It includes sub-fields such as crime statistics criminal psychology forensic science law enforcement , and investigative methods. Research in criminology applies the scientific method to test hypotheses and ultimately develop theories that help explain the causes and other aspects of crime.

35. FSU.com :: FSU Center For Criminology And Public Policy Research Helps Cut Crime
Act standards in juvenile justice schools throughout all 50 states. Blombergpoints to the chasm between criminology research and public policy in areas
http://www.fsu.com/pages/2005/07/13/public_policy.html
THOMAS BLOMBERG FSU Center for Criminology and Public Policy Research helps cut crime in all 50 states
BY LIBBY FAIRHURST
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, every year for the past 10 the victim costs of crime in America have exceeded $450 billion, a staggering figure that doesn't calculate the human misery or the dollars needed to run the nation's juvenile and adult justice systems. Each year, 600,000 prisoners are released; within three, roughly two-thirds return. Nearly 70 percent have alcohol and drug problems; about 40 percent land back behind bars.
Meanwhile, Florida State University's Center for Criminology and Public Policy Research is leading a quiet revolution to give academic scholarship a vital role in the control of crime and put FSU at the forefront of public policy and practice.
Because when it comes to cutting crime's terrible toll, "It's not that nothing works. We know there are things that do," said Thomas Blomberg, since 2004 the dean of FSU's venerable College of Criminology and Criminal Justice and director of the burgeoning research center affiliated with it.
The center's mission: expand the role of research to promote evidence-based instead of emotion- and belief-based policy-making at all levels of the criminal justice system; create a centralized data warehouse open to all and second to none; and boost the already distinguished College of Criminology to national prominence.

School Overview
No matter where one looks today, it is clear that our society is confronted with great opportunities but also is facing very complex problems. Health care, crime, environmental degradation, family violence, limited or inadequate child care, poverty, unaffordable housing, urban sprawl, government that sometimes seems unresponsive and inefficient, conflict that is as local as street gangs and as global as ethnic strife in far-away nations these and other problems seem so complex that citizens wonder where they can turn for answers. Universities, with their faculty expertise, can be valuable partners in the search for solutions to these problems, and yet the problems are so complex that no single academic department can provide the answers. The School of Social Ecology offers a multidisciplinary perspective on these issues. The School's faculty have won numerous prestigious awards and are committed to high-quality research and teaching, while at the same time making a strong commitment to community outreach and engagement for the betterment of society. This distinctive feature of the School has brought it international acclaim as an innovative leader in combining multiple disciplines in the conduct of research on complex problems.
Academic Offerings
Applied Ecology

The M.A. in Criminology and Justice
The world of crime is changing rapidly. While still encompassing the traditional realm of burglars and robbers, it now includes new forms of criminality, including: terrorists, international drug traffickers, computer criminals, multi-national white-collar criminals, and international organized crime groups. To better understand these trends, the Master of Arts in Criminology and Justice provides preparation in both traditional theories and descriptions of crime as well as newer interpretations and methodologies. The latter includes training in computer-based statistical applications, as well as forensic analysis of physical and psychological evidence.
The program is designed to prepare students for:
  • Careers in research and analysis for government agencies and private consulting firms

Criminology as a Career
Criminology has long been taught in academic departments but in the last two decades interest in the subject has increased as the criminal justice system has expanded dramatically. Between 1982 and 1999, state, federal and local government expenditures on criminal justice increased by 300% and the number of persons employed by the system grew by 72%. In New York State alone, over 168,000 people are employed in criminal justice agencies.
(Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics, 2000) This growth is also reflected in statistics on professional criminological organizations. In 1972, the American Society of Criminology (ASC) had just 529 members. By 1996, the group's ranks had increased by over 500% to 2,731 members.
(The Criminologist, 1997)
