Commercial Lists These lists allow the buying and selling of books.
  • BooksCanada - A forum for the discussion, buying, and selling of antiquarian, out of print, and secondhand books in Canada. Postings of books wanted, books for sale, discussions on book collecting, authors, titles, book care and repair, bibliographic information, book fair announcements, etc. are examples of welcome topics. (Besides, it's my list, so that means it has to be good, right?)
  • Bibliophile - Most of the traffic on this list is postings of books for sale, or books wanted with a bit of information on book care, collecting, and miscellaneous events thrown in. This is - to the best of my knowledge - the longest running of all of the commercial lists. The volume is very, very high, so be sure you can handle a couple of hundred messages per day! There is a subscription fee, but there is a three week free trial period.

Criminology Department appoints first M.S. director Former Department of Justice official to head new program By jon passaro February 10, 2004
The appointment of Laurie Robinson as director of the master's of science in Criminology program marked another step forward in the development of Penn's new Criminology Department. Robinson, who has worked for the U.S. Department of Justice and the American Bar Association, will lead the Ivy League's only M.S. in Criminology program when matriculants arrive in September 2004. The program consists of eight courses over two semesters and will eventually see about 25 students per year. According to Lawrence Sherman, director of the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology, Robinson was the natural choice as she has been a key player in the development of the criminology program since the department was created in June 2003. "This is an expansion of the duties that she's been performing since she came to the Jerry Lee Center," Sherman said.

http://www.law.warwick.ac.uk/ltj/3-2f.html
Law Lists on the Internet Lyonette Louis-Jacques, University of Chicago What is a "Law List"? A "law list" is an electronic mailing list for substantive discussions of law-related issues. A law list can also focus on dissemination of information about print and electronic law-related resources, computing and librarianship. It can be an electronic newsletter or journal on a law-related topic. A list can be called a listserv, mailing list, electronic discussion group, forum, e-mail list, e-conferences, and sometimes, "bulletin board" (though that confuses it with bulletin board systems or BBSs - see guides below for clarification). Lists are similar to, but not the same as Usenet newsgroups (though some lists have a Usenet gateway; newsgroups are discussed in general guides to law-related resources, and will not be covered in this article). Law lists are run on various software, the most popular being the Eric Thomas LISTSERV and the Anastasios Kotsikonas ListProcessor or LISTPROC. Subscribers can usually send commands to the list software to request a list of subscribers by name, e-mail address, and sometimes country. Other list features include the ability to postpone mail, receive a digest of list messages (one mailing of the messages for a day with routing information stripped, to reduce the length and frequency of receipt of messages), search list archives, etc. There are special lists to support owners of lists running a particular software such as LSTOWN-L@SEARN.BITNET (for LISTSERV lists) and UNIX-LISTPROC@avs.com. And there are lists to help beginning users of law lists become more familiar with listservs and the Internet generally such as HELP-NET@TEMPLEVM.BITNET.

The Hidden Control of Code
To give you a better understanding of control through code, I have excerpted bits and pieces of e-mail I received in one 24-hour period. Someone, as it turns out, if I can believe the information in the e-mail flow, someone whose hobby includes porno and whose English is far below standard, got hold of the e-mail list of the American Society of Criminology and created a huge listserv, sending to this large group of criminologists all at once. Most professionals are already on more mailing lists, and have more correspondence than they can keep up with. None of us were too happy with this state of affairs. I saw the problem at about 10:00 on Sunday night. Downloaded the messages, since I run an ASC listserv, thinking that someone had somehow misused my own listsev. I decided to deal with it Monday. Monday morning I had 156 e-mails, most of them the new listserv (turned out they hadn't got to mine), and most of them angry, with my poor students' e-mails sandwiched in between. I read one. It purported to tell me how to unsubscribe.
