Since its founding in 1910 by Dean John Henry Wigmore, The Journal of Criminal Law and Criminology (JCLC) has played a unique role in the history of criminology in America. JCLC continues to provide a forum for dialogue and debate on such topics as white-collar crime, constitutional questions, international law, evidence, jurisdiction, and securities regulation. The Journal remains one of the most widely circulated law journals in the country with a broad readership that includes judges and legal academics, as well as practitioners, criminologists, and police officers. Welcome to the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice
at Southern Oregon University
This criminal justice program, one of the oldest in the nation, provides a learning environment of superior education in the finest tradition of small public liberal arts colleges. The faculty is an optimum blend of scholars with broad practical experience and diverse academic credentials from different disciplines who support and practice the concept of individual personal attention for each one of our majors; the faculty regularly knows students by their first name. This criminal justice program is large enough to offer all the amenities of a well-funded program but small enough to remain personal and sociable. Graduates of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at SOU frequently go to work immediately after graduation; many find careers in the same agency where they completed their student internship. Most graduates are employed at municipal, county, state, and federal levels of government throughout the United States but mostly in the Pacific-Northwest serving in positions such as probation officers, parole officers, police officers, law enforcement personnel, juvenile workers, lawyers, private security, and correctional institutions.

What is The New School of Convict Criminology? "That's the reality, and to hell with what the class-room bred, degree toting, grant-hustling 'experts' say from their well-funded, air-conditioned offices far removed from the grubby realities of the prisoners' lives."
Rideau and Wikberg, 1992: 59
[Introduction, "What is the New School of Convict Criminology?"]
If legislators, practitioners, researchers, and scholars are serious about addressing the corrections crisis (e.g., Clear, 1994; Welch, 1996, 1999; Austin et al., 2001; Austin and Irwin, 2001; Ross and Richards, 2002; Richards, 2003), we need to be more honest and creative with respect to the research we conduct and the policies we advocate, implement, and evaluate. In an effort to promote this objective, this chapter introduces what we are calling "Convict Criminology," and reviews the theoretical and historical grounding, current initiatives, and dominant themes of this emerging school of social thought and movement.

For best viewing experience, please enable Javascripts! You are in: CRIMINAL MIND/ CRIMINAL PROFILING PREDICTING THE DANGEROUSNESS OF A CRIMINAL
By Wayne Petherick
An Imperfect Science
"The authority to detain a particular defendant to protect society is naturally premised on the idea that it is at least reasonably possible for the courts to make predictions regarding the possibility that particular defendants, if released, would act in ways that would endanger other individuals or the community in general” [D. N. Adair]. Over time, there has been a need for professionals to assess the level of dangerousness a certain individual poses to society. This may take the form of assessing an individual for his tendency to commit violent acts, either now or in the future, or it may be assessing an inmate's suitability for release back into the community; that is, whether or not he will continue to pose a danger upon release. Given that an inaccurate prediction could mean the difference between liberation and incarceration, these assessments must be conducted with great caution. This is especially true when one considers that the rate of false positives, that is, those assessments that incorrectly identify an individual as a danger when he is not, is incredibly high.

Criminology and Penology Abstracts
Analysis prepared by Joyce L. Ogburn June 1990 A. ISSUES REVIEWED: Vol.1-8, 1961-1968 titled Excerpta Criminologica, published by Excerpta Criminologica Foundation. Vol. 9-19, 1969-1979 titled Abstracts on Criminology and Penology, published by Kluwer. Vol. 20-, 1980- published as Criminology and Penology Abstracts by Kugler Publications. B. FREQUENCY: Bimonthly. C. INTRODUCTION: GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Criminology and Penology Abstracts is "An international abstracting service covering the etiology of crime and juvenile delinquency, the control and treatment of offenders, criminal procedure, and the administration of justice." USABILITY: This abstract service is not difficult to use, although it would be improved by the addition of a five year cumulative index or an index for each of the first two titles. The existing annual indexes are extensive and detailed, requiring the scanning of each index entry for effective use. The subdivisions of the main sections of the abstracts are quite specific and helpful in getting to the right section. There are no instructions to the user. D. SCOPE:
