Criminal Justice Career Opion: Probation and Parole Officer
CJC Staff
Many people who are convicted of crimes are placed on probation instead of being sent to prison. During probation, offenders must stay out of trouble and meet requirements dictated by the court. Probation officers supervise offenders who have been placed on probation. Parole officers perform many of the same duties that probation officers perform; however, parole officers supervise offenders who have been released from prison to ensure that they comply with the conditions of their parole.
Often the job of probation and parole officer is combined in small communities. Probation and parole officers supervise offenders on probation or parole through personal contact with the offender and his or her family. Some offenders are required to wear an electronic device so that probation officers can monitor their activities. Officers may arrange for offenders to get substance abuse rehabilitation or job training. They also attend court hearings to update the court on the offender's compliance with the terms of his or her sentence and on the offender's efforts at rehabilitation.
Duties: Probation and parole officers may perform some or all of the following:
Review and evaluate legal and social history of offender or inmate
Determine nature and extent of inmate's or offender's criminal record
Determine current social problems
Inform offender or inmate of requirements of conditional release such as office visits, restitution payments, or educational and employment stipulations

COUNSELORS AND SOCIAL WORKERS
Sometimes a rewarding career can mean more than just financial success; there are many jobs where personal satisfaction far outweighs the quest for the almighty dollar. If you like to help people work out problems and plan for the future, perhaps you should consider a job as a counselor or social worker.
The main job of a counselor is to help people make informed personal, family, social, career and educational decisions, or deal with specific problems or concerns in these areas. The four main types of counselors are: school and college counselors, college career counselors, rehabilitation counselors, and employment counselors.
Social service workers (sometimes known as human services workers) often help people by working for various organizations such as government agencies, halfway houses, health agencies, group homes and prisons.

Probation Officer Career and Job Highlights
  • Most are employed by local and State governments.
  • A four-year college degree in the fields of criminal justice, social work, or some other relevant area is normally required.
  • Job growth is directly connected to public funding, and is expected to grow at an average rate.
Probation Officer Career Overview
Instead of serving prison time, many criminals are placed on probation. Convicts must steer clear of trouble and comply with other regulations while on probation. People on probation are supervised by probation officers, or community supervision officers as they are known in some States. Prison inmates receive counsel and assistance in planning for their release from imprisonment from correctional treatment specialists, or case managers.
Pretrial service officers and parole officers function very similarly to probation officers. One major difference is that parole officers ensure criminals who have served jail time and have been released comply with all the requirements of their parole. Some States combine the roles of probation and parole officers. When police arrests suspects, pretrial services officers conduct investigations on them. Based on these investigations it is determined whether to release the suspects before their trial. Pretrial officers must supervise suspects if they are released to ensure they appear in court for the trial and that they comply with other stipulations of their release. In some Federal courts pretrial services officers and probation officers do the same job.

Career Options CAREER OPTIONS
Careers in Sociology BSOS 398C Job Prospects for The B.A. Careers in Sociology Back To Top Sociology also studies the ways in which people give meaning to their experience. All human behavior is social. The subject matter of sociology ranges from the intimate family to the hostile mob, from crime to religion, from divisions of race, gender and social class to the shared beliefs of a common culture, from the sociology of work to the sociology of sport. Few fields have such broad scope and relevance. Because sociology seems to offer something for everyone, it may seem surprising that its career potential is just beginning to be tapped. Thirty years ago, there was really only one visibly prominent career in sociology. To be a sociologist was to be a professor, or at least a teacher of some sort. Although teaching remains the dominant activity among the more than eighteen thousand professional sociologists today, other forms of employment are growing in both numbers and significance. Not all of these jobs are reserved exclusively for sociologists. In some sectors, sociologists are joined by economists, social workers, psychologists and others. All of this represents a growing appreciation of sociology's real and potential contributions.
