Irvin D. Rutman
Editorial You may recall that in the most recent issue of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal there was an editorial lamenting the inadequacy of the "Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity" plea as used in contemporary legal proceedings. The editorial noted that the major elements defining the NGBRI plea were in many respects ambiguous, inconsistent from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, and seriously antiquated. The McNaughton ruling, on which the NGBRI plea is primarily based, stated that the defendant should be judged insane if he/she could not distinguish between right and wrong at the time the criminal act was committed. The McNaughton ruling was first issued in England in 1843.

This area provides information about various law jobs including their tasks, educational requirements and role of lawyers.
Want to get married, drive a car, run a business, make a will, or get a job? Do you want to have protection from thieves, drug dealers, and those who would do you harm? Laws govern all of these areas and many more. Some would say that there is a law for every aspect of our lives. Creating, interpreting, enforcing, and educating people about those laws provides millions of jobs for people across the globe.
What is Law?
A law is a rule that governs specific actions, relationships, and establishments that is enforceable and includes punishment for those who violate the rule. Laws can be enacted on a local, state, federal or international level. This wide expanse of law gives rise to a large number of careers that are related to the law. In general they fall into one of the following categories.
  • Legislative – those who make the law Law Enforcement – those who enforce the law
  • Legal system – those who interpret the law and provide the structure for accountability and defense Corrections – those responsible for the punishment and rehabilitation of lawbreakers Educators – those who teach others about laws and the other law categories
Although the different career areas have a common theme in that they all deal with laws of a society, they involve different job duties and tasks.

Introduction The Criminal Justice Certificate Program (CJCP) is a specific sequence of courses and field work for students wanting to learn about the dynamics of America's criminal and juvenile justice systems. In consultation with a program advisor, CJCP students select courses from nine academic departments to gain a broad understanding of the philosophy, theories, and operation of the adult and juvenile justice systems. Classes may be chosen in any sequence but classes in Group I, II, and III are prerequisites to Group VII, Field Work. Courses are derived from the departments of Sociology, Political Science, Social Work, Psychology, Statistics, Counseling Psychology, Communication Arts, Women's Studies, and Rehabilitation Psychology and Special Education. CJCP studies focus on the causes of crime and delinquency, examine fundamental concepts underlying the practice of justice, and analyze the impact of crime on our society. The inner workings of criminal justice agencies are reviewed and options for controlling crime are surveyed. Students are challenged to consider new ways of preventing and handling crime. Studies are completed in tandem with a chosen major. Upon completion of all requirements and graduation, students are awarded an inscribed Certificate in Criminal Justice for personal use.

    Careers in Criminal Justice
Criminal justice is the system of law enforcement, the bar, the judiciary, corrections and probation that is directly involved in the apprehension, prosecution, defense, sentencing, incarceration and supervision of those suspected of or charged with criminal offenses. The term criminal justice refers to an interdisciplinary field that draws upon the knowledge bases of criminology, sociology, psychology, law, public policy, computer technology and other related disciplines to develop insights into the causes and prevention of criminal behavior. It is an area of knowledge concerned with understanding and controlling crime. The contemporary criminal justice system in the United States is monumental in size. It includes more than 55,000 public agencies employing more than 1.5 million people. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, it has a budget of more than $60 billion for agencies, 6,000 correctional operations. There are approximately 18,000 police agencies, 17,000 courts, 8,000 prosecutorial agencies, 6,000 correctional institutions and almost 4,000 probation and parole departments. If you are not sure if this is the right major for you, you may want to enroll in "Careers in Criminal Justice," an introductory course into the numerous careers available as a criminal justice graduate.
