Criminal justice is the system of law enforcement, the bar, the judiciary, corrections and probation that is directly involved in the apprehension, prosecution, defense, sentencing, incarceration and supervision of those suspected of or charged with criminal offenses. The term criminal justice refers to an interdisciplinary field that draws upon the knowledge bases of criminology, sociology, psychology, law, public policy, computer technology and other related disciplines to develop insights into the causes and prevention of criminal behavior. Message From The Dean
The undergraduate Criminal Justice program introduces students to the theory and practice of the United States criminal justice system. The educational program emphasizes the study of the various sub-systems of the criminal justice system. Course emphases include: adult and juvenile crime causation theory; constitutional and criminal law; the courts; institutional and community-based corrections; and municipal and federal law enforcement. Possible careers include the practice of law; federal, state, and municipal law enforcement; professional human services, including counseling, probation, and parole; and criminal justice agency administration. Students receive instruction from a wide variety of experienced criminal justice system practitioners, including judges, attorneys, justice system agency administrators, as well as a highly-qualified professional academic faculty. Our first goal is to develop a fully educated person. We therefore provide professional education combined with an integrated liberal arts core curriculum. The University's Core Curriculum provides students with broad exposure to the liberal arts and helps them acquire the capacity for critical thought, which is needed to pursue detailed analysis of the United States Justice System. Our second goal is to prepare highly qualified potential criminal justice system employees. Consequently, the Criminal Justice program offers courses that emphasize the development of students' capacity for creative thought, analytical reasoning, and reading and writing ability. Moreover, because criminal justice is an applied discipline, the faculty has implemented a strong internship program as an essential part of the academic program. Roger Williams University Criminal Justice program students have recently completed internships with numerous regional criminal justice system agencies, including the United States Secret Service, the United States Marshal's Service, the Rhode Island State Police, the Rhode Island Department of the Attorney General, and numerous municipal and local police departments.

Is it ethical or are you flogging a dead horse?
Lying can put a strain on everything right from the word go. You will be nipping and tucking every misshaped statement to cover the non-existent excuses until it becomes a farce, matched only by the French classics of the late 19th century. Hark! I hear you shout. What is he going on about? I am referring to the fine line that many people play around when it comes to disclosing personal information about themselves. You may be in a good job with good prospects but at the back of your mind lies a doubt. Before applying for your current position you had a run in with a drunken lout outside a pub one night. It wasn't your fault but you got into a fight and he ended up in hospital leaving you with a charge of GBH. Your life before and since has been a picture of perfection as you ride up the corporate ladder. Success is so good that you don't mention the conviction when you are asked. A persons past invariably affects that persons future. A failed education can restrict a persons ability to move on when potential employers are looking for good GCSE's as opposed to bad trips on LSD. Civil actions and criminal records can restrict people in getting the job that they want. Its Monday morning and back to work after another non-eventful weekend. You meet the same faces with the added excitement of meeting possibly new ones. Cup of coffee to start the day and you have your banter ready for the go. But your mate, who normally gets in before you, isn't at his desk. The steam from the hot coffee and the skewed chair tells you he is about. But where? You think nothing more and carry on with your chores for the day. A few minutes tick by and a shadow draws over your desk from the other side, where your missing colleague normally sits. But he is missing no more. He is accompanied, not by the sexy PA but by the security man from downstairs, about to escort him out of the building.

The master of arts and master of science degrees with a major in applied anthropology are grounded in the theory and methods of anthropology. While designed to prepare students for employment outside academia, students are also prepared in theory and method to transfer to a doctoral program. Graduates apply anthropological knowledge in private and public sectors, foundations and businesses in local, regional and international arenas. They address compelling social problems and operate and administer agencies charged with addressing those problems. They have the knowledge necessary to undertake informed and thoughtful action as practitioners, administrators, agency-based researchers and program evaluators. The program is designed to give students an excellent grounding in anthropology and the opportunity through internships to apply their knowledge.
