This model has been adopted widely by Ph.D. programs in clinical psychology nationwide. This model maintains the primacy of research training while also providing the necessary clinical preparation. The program will educate students both to provide professional psychological services to and within the law enforcement field and the criminal and civil justice systems and to contribute to the development of knowledge in the field. The educational goals of the PhD program are as follows:
  • To prepare students to develop and conduct independent research in the field of forensic psychology.

Criminal Profiling
What is Criminal Profiling?
Criminal profiling consists of analyzing a crime scene and using the information to determine the identity of the perpetrator. While this doesn't directly give you the perpetrator's name, it is very helpful in narrowing down suspects. For example, a profile based on a crime scene provides information that may include the perpetrator's personality , sex, age, ethnic background, and possible physical features such as disfigurements or height and weight. This information can then be used to identify possible suspects, depending on who fits the profile. Personality is one of the most important parts of a criminal profile. A Forensic Science website puts it precisely: "Behavior reflects personality. And that is what profiling is all about" ( ForPsych, 1997
How Does Criminal Profiling Work?
Personality profiles of criminals are based on the way in which a crime is committed, also known as the 'method of operations' or m.o. The m.o. includes the identity of the victim(s), what the victims (in the case of a serial offender) have in common, the weapon(s) used, the degree of hostility, the existence (or lack) of any torture and/or sexual molestation, and so on. Analyzing these aspects of the crime scene, an investigator (usually a trained forensic psychologist) can determine the motives of the perpetrator, which leads to a description of the perpetrator's personality, or the personality profile

A HISTORY AND OVERVIEW OF FORENSIC PSYCHOLOGY
"The most effective way to organize human energy is thru rivalry, specialization, and social control" (Charles Cooley) Forensic psychology is a well-established, yet often misunderstood, practice area of psychology and law. Historically , the field predates the sociological jurisprudence movement of 1930-1950, and goes back at least to 1908 when Hugo Munsterberg (the founder of applied psychology) published the book On the Witness Stand , now online and mostly about eyewitness testimony and juries, but arguably the first book on forensic psychology. Others cite historical benchmarks in Germany with the psychiatrist Albert von Schrenck-Notzing offering testimony in court about pretrial publicity as far back as 1896 or William Stern's publication (also in Germany) of the first journal or periodical dealing with forensic psychology, called Betrage zur Psychologie der Aussage . In the United States, the first psychological experiment on the psychology of testimony was conducted by J. McKeen Cattell

Forensic Psychology
The Law-Psychiatry Program at UMMS trains both forensic psychology and forensic psychiatry fellows. While the applied forensic experience and supervision are somewhat different for these two sets of fellows, they participate in one didactic program which includes clinical and legal components.
The Program's objectives are consistent with recent trends in graduate training in psychology, which encourage a general pre-doctoral internship followed by a post-doctoral year of training in a specialty. In many states, these two years satisfy the experience requirements for licensing as a psychologist. The Program is also designed to provide the necessary supervised experience for certification as "designated forensic psychologist," which is required by state regulations for public sector forensic mental health positions in Massachusetts.
"Forensic psychology" refers to the application of clinical psychology in service to the legal system, to individuals about whom the legal system must make decisions, and to other clinical populations for whom clinical decisions may be of legal importance. These populations include, for example, adults with mental illnesses in criminal and civil cases, disturbed and delinquent juveniles, and children and families who come before the courts on questions of child welfare. The focus of the clinical experiences for the fellows in the Program is on adults within the criminal justice system as well as those facing civil commitment.
