Forensic Psychology
S peaking the truth, I do not personally know any criminal profilers, like I do psychologists who do research, teaching, and consultation in the general field of psychology and law. I, like many others, have learnt about the profilers' line of work through movies and TV shows. For example, I was fascinated by what Jodie Foster's character did in the movie Silence of the Lambs. She was the protégé in the BSU (Behavioral Science Unit). The head of the BSU was modeled after John E. Douglas, a real-life former FBI profiler. Thanks to the popular media, criminal profilers became probably the only forensic psychologists we are familiar with. For people who are interested in some serious discussions about criminal profiling its start, its use, its theoretical models and validity, the facts and the myths I compiled some links in the Criminal Profiling page. Forensic Psychology: The misunderstood beast
Note: For students and laymen alike forensics appears to be one of the most misunderstood psychological disciplines. People cannot be blamed for their misconceptions. In my four year undergraduate program forensics was mentioned only once. And what was mentioned was a useless definition that really did not explain at all the intricacies of the field. The most common definition is that, "Forensic Psychology is the application of psychological knowledge to the criminal justice system." Well what does that tell us? Not much. When I read that definition I asked myself, what psychological knowledge is being applied and what exactly is the criminal justice system? The answers as I eventually found out are very diverse. The easiest way to explain the field is to break down the criminal justice system into its own sub- components and see where psychological knowledge can be applied to these areas. The Beginning - Criminal Investigation Round Two - The Court System
Frequently, people forget about the applications of forensic psychology to civil law. Often a forensic psychologist is asked to make evaluations of defendants or plaintiffs disability or level of trauma. From these evaluations the court can decide whether compensatory damages should be provided. Civil-Forensic Psychologists also work on child custody, sexual harassment, and immigration cases. Virtually any civil matter that requires psychological evaluation may include the work of a Forensic Psychologist. It is important to remember that not all Forensic Psychologists work with violent criminals.

The word "forensic" comes from the Latin word "forensis," meaning "of the forum," where the law courts of ancient Rome were held. Today forensic refers to the application of scientific principles and practices to the adversary process where specially knowledgeable scientists play a role. The Diplomate in Forensic Psychology The credential for identifying competence at the highest level in forensic psychology is the Diplomate. The receipt of the Diploma in Forensic Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) attests to the fact that and established organization of peers has examined and accepted the Diplomate as functioning at the highest level of excellence in his or her field of forensic competence. The ABPP diploma has been recognized by judicial decisions, regulations, and statutes in some jurisdictions as the standard of professional competence in forensic psychology.

Anthony J. Pinizzotto, PhD, Federal Bureau of Investigation

Since my entrance on duty with the FBI in 1988, I have researched various areas of law enforcement safety. This research resulted in a number of articles, training guides, and publications including Killed in the Line of Duty and In the Line of Fire.
My original focus in forensic psychology, since the publication of my dissertation in 1988, has been on the application of principles of psychology to crime scenes and the subsequent interview and interrogation of the offender. This led to the interest and eventual practice of investigative or forensic hypnosis.
