Education Chief Targets Colleges

Sep 19 2005 - Detroit News
Education Secretary Margaret Spellings plans to announce a major initiative today to improve higher education. The country “needs a coordinated approach to meet rising enrollment numbers and new economic demands,” Spellings noted. Spellings’ plan consists of creating a commission that will be charged with developing “a comprehensive national strategy for post-secondary education.” The commission will likely tackle issues like affordability and how well colleges prepare students for the global economy. It may also focus on the lack of solid information about what colleges are and are not doing well.
Is AP Too Good To Be True?

As the Advanced Placement program hits a frenzied peak, some experts wonder whether the program’s wild proliferation has begun to dilute its quality. Several new academic studies indicate that taking AP classes, as opposed to passing the end-of-year examinations run by the College Board, is not a good predictor of college success. Some high schools are complicating matters by pasting the AP label onto subpar courses. A few highly selective schools have become sufficiently alarmed over the quality of AP classes that they are getting picky about awarding credit even to those who have passed the exam. A dozen high-profile prep schools have dropped AP altogether.

http://www.fsmb.org/consumer.htm
What is a State Medical Board? The primary responsibility and obligation of a state medical board is to protect consumers of health care through proper licensing and regulation of physicians and, in some jurisdictions, other health care professionals T he practice of medicine is not an inherent right of an individual, but a privilege granted by the people of a state acting through their elected representatives. To protect the public from the unprofessional, improper and incompetent practice of medicine, it is necessary for the state to provide laws and regulations that outline the practice of medicine and the responsibility of the medical board to regulate that practice. This guidance is outlined in a state statute, usually called a medical practice act. Medical board structure Board membership is composed of volunteers who are charged with upholding the medical practice act in their jurisdictions. A state medical board is usually composed of physician and public members who are, in most instances, appointed by the governor. Some boards are independent in structure, exercising all licensing and disciplinary powers, while others are part of a larger umbrella agency, such as the Department of Health, exercising varied levels of responsibilities or functioning in an advisory capacity. Funding for medical board activities comes from licensing and registration fees. Most boards employ an administrative staff, which includes an executive officer, attorneys and investigators, with some legal services provided by the state's office of the attorney general.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESOURCES
Drugs and Crime "At a cost of approximately $28,000 per person, the State of Michigan currently spends in excess of $160 million dollars each year to incarcerate drug offenders. The actual cost to Michigan taxpayers is much higher because costs of incarceration do not include costs associated with crime investigations, prosecution, and defense of individuals charged with drug offenses."
