Welcome to the Washington Young Lawyers Division!
The purpose of the Washington Young Lawyers Division (WYLD) shall be to encourage the interest and participation of young lawyers in WSBA activities, to develop and conduct programs of value to young lawyers and the public, to improve the legal system, and to enhance the quality of the legal profession in our state and our country.
Volunteer Opportunity: Mock Trials
Each year, the Washington State Bar Association Young Lawyers Division coordinates a Trial Advocacy Program. It is taught by many well-respected practitioners from the Seattle/Tacoma area and provides two weekends of intensive hands-on training that covers all aspects of litigation from pre-trial preparation to closing arguments. Course outline
As the outline reflects, the second weekend of the program consist of mock trials at the King County Courthouse in Seattle. They are conducted entirely in character as if they were real trials, with King, Pierce, and Snohomish County judges presiding. The judges also provide constructive oral feedback on the participants' performance immediately following the trial.
We are recruiting young lawyers and law students to act as jury members in the mock trials. This is an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with a "live" courtroom setting, observe a trial from a juror's perspective, and to listen as judges comment on what works and what doesn't during trial.

KCBA Drug Policy Project
    The King County Bar Association is leading a high-level partnership of lawyers, doctors, pharmacists and other professionals in Washington to find more effective ways to reduce the harm and costs of drug abuse, and of the “War on Drugs” itself. What began over four years ago as a transitory study of current drug laws has evolved into a comprehensive, long-term effort to bring about meaningful reform of drug policy on many levels. The principal objectives of this effort are: reductions in crime and public disorder improvement of the public health better protection of children ; and wiser use of scarce public resources Through its Drug Policy Project, the King County Bar Association has been examining a public health approach to drug abuse, promoting:
    • increases in the scope and effectiveness of drug addiction treatment programs, including expanded access to treatment, improved case management systems and the broadening of treatment opportunities to include mental health care, work-readiness and vocational training, literacy training, housing and the fostering of peer and family supports;
    • reforms and improvements to drug abuse prevention and drug education programs that ensure the implementation of evidence-based methods, stressing youth development in general and the maintenance of healthy behaviors and healthy relationships rather than a fear-based approach to drug use that too often relies on misinformation or partial information;

PROTECT Newswire The real price of gas Sep 20, 2005 Just last week, the Florida Department of Children and Families reminded the world that it cannot and will not reform on its own. After years of national media exposure for its failure to watch over foster children, a memo surfaced authorizing workers to cut out visits to foster children to save money on gasoline in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. While that new scandal was unfolding, another reminder of the real cost of Florida's failure to protect was sitting in a Miami courtroom, charged with killing her child. During a bond hearing Friday, Yusimil Herrera , 22, exploded at her prosecutor, threatening to jump over a railing and "beat the s- out of that man."
Herrera, now 22-years old, is charged with beating to death her 3-year old daughter, Angel in a fit of rage. Herrera made national news in the 90's , when she won a multi-million dollar jury verdict against the state. According to CBS News, Herrera and her sister were "born to a drug-addicted mother" and abandoned at the ages of two and four on a street corner in Miami. She was placed in foster care, where she says she was "moved 65 times among almost 40 different foster homes and institutions." The CBS program 60 Minutes combed through 15,000 pages of medical and DCF records. Among their findings: Herrera was placed in one foster home that "already had a complaint of 'bizarre' physical abuse," was sexually assaulted at age three in her first foster home, found with cigarette burns and scars, reported to be scavenging through the garbage at school for food and treated for syphillis at age 9 or 10. She was found to be suicidal by age nine. She has also been diagnosed with a serious mental illness and is on psychiatric medication. In 1999, a jury awarded her $4.4 million in compensation by the State, an amount later reduced to $80,000.

PSA Board
The PSA is overseen by a seven-member board committed to maintaining vigilant and cost-effective management of the public-private partnership for developing and operating the stadium. Governor Gary Locke appointed the board in July 1997 in cooperation with the majority and minority party leaders of the Washington State Legislature. The members of the PSA Board are:
Lorraine Hine, Chair
Lorraine Hine was appointed to the PSA Board when it was first created in 1997. She believes the successful completion of the Washington State Football/Soccer Stadium and Exhibition Center is a real testimony of a public-private partnership that worked.
"The multi-use capability of these facilities was one of our goals. We are pleased to see the stadium is able to host not just football or soccer but also concerts, celebrations and charitable events of all kinds. The Exhibition Center is also expanded by the swing space in the completed stadium. I believe the project has met the public's expectations and will contribute to the enjoyment and economic vitality of our state for many years to come." Hine lives in Olympia. Her appointment to the PSA Board continues through the year 2005. Lorraine's public service includes being chief of staff for Governor Mike Lowry and serving 12 years in the Washington State House of Representatives, achieving the office of majority leader. Prior to state service, Hine was mayor of the City of Des Moines.

The Iowa Nurses Association is the professional organization of registered nurses in Iowa. The mission is to promote professional nursing, to provide a unified voice in Iowa, and to advocate for the health and well-being of all people.
In the Iowa headlines
Call to Convention 2005 Colleagues, We don’t have to look far to find examples of unity and its benefits. Any choir, sports team, play, or family will work far better if there’s unity among its members. The Iowa Nurses Association also depends on unity. The 101st meeting of the Iowa Nurses Association invites us to unify with the theme:“Taking Care of Business”. You are the voice of nursing today. You care for a patient’s health in good times and bad. You are a vital part of their life and death. No matter what practice area or experience level, you are sure to find information that you need and can use. The convention committee and staff have been hard at making this event special. The keynote speaker is Dr. Humor. I recently read in Prevention magazine, “Your doctor may soon be prescribing 15 minutes of chuckling a day. A new study finds that laughter can improve blood flow, which over time may protect against heart disease.” Make a new friend or re-discover an old one. Meet nurses from around Iowa who can share your challenges and joys. Re-energize yourself as nurses come together to unify the profession.
