The Thin Red Line
An eyewitness history of the Crimean War
Julian Spilsbury
A FORGOTTEN VOICES for Victoria's Redcoats Reviews The Crimean War was the first 'modern' war for the British forces: journalists reported home via the telegraph, a device that also tempted the government to micro-manage the war from the comfort of Whitehall. It is most famous for the charge of the Light Brigade, celebrated in poetry and film as a classic British military disaster. It also gave us 'The Thin Red Line', when a handful of British infantry saw off a horde of Russian cavalry.
It was the first war in which ordinary British soldiers recorded their experiences - and Julian Spilsbury brings their story to life, together with the very different world of their officers and assorted mistresses. The army in the Crimea was a microcosm of Victorian society with all its strengths and weaknesses.

New York, St. Martin's Press, 2000. xix, 564 pp. $35.00 U.S. (cloth). Everyone interested in history has an impression of the Crimean war, if only of the awesome destruction of the British Light Brigade, mistakenly charging the Russian cannon at the battle of Baklava in the aftermath of the Heavy Brigade's triumph in breaking the Russian line. The latter passed into oblivion but the former took on immortality after Alfred Tennyson, doing a good day's work as Poet Laureate, transformed boneheaded tragedy into a paean to unhesitating duty in the memorable verses of "The Charge of the Light Brigade": Was there a man dismay'd?

70. The Ottomans: European Imperialism And Crisis
Ottoman history in the nineteenth century was dominated by European wars and The crimean war initiated a decline in Ottoman morale and a helplessness.
http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~dee/OTTOMAN/EUROPE.HTM
Ottoman history in the nineteenth century was dominated by European wars and expansion. The Europeans madly scrambled for territory throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century. Some of this was European territory, but far and away, the bulk of the territory that Europeans desired was non-European. Human history has never seen such rapid and frenetic annexation of territory as occurred in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The end result for the Ottomans was the loss of Empire, and, finally, the loss of the Ottoman dynasty itself.
The Crimean War
The first major Ottoman war, the Crimean War
This war is unique in Ottoman history in that the outcome wasn't heavily influenced by the Ottomans themselves. The war soon became a European war when Britain and France allied with the Ottomans in order to protect their lucrative trade interests in the region. The war ended badly for the Russians, and the Paris peace of 1856 was unfavorable to them. In textbooks, the Crimean War is presented entirely from the perspective of the Europeans, for it brought home the fact that more European powers were willing to overthrow the old order than to maintain it. It had, though, important consequences for the Ottoman Empire, as well. From this point onwards, the Ottoman Empire saw itself as being heavily controlled by Europeans. The Crimean War initiated a decline in Ottoman morale and a helplessness. Europeans, for their part, no longer saw the Ottomans as an equal force to be reckoned with, but as a tool to be used in larger European concerns.

Florence Nightingale is best remembered for her work as a nurse during the Crimean War and her contribution towards the reform of the sanitary conditions in military field hospitals. However, what is less well known about this amazing woman is her love of mathematics, especially statistics, and how this love played an important part in her life's work. Named after the city of her birth, Nightingale was born at the Villa Colombia in Florence, Italy, on 12 May 1820. Her parents, William Edward Nightingale and his wife Frances Smith, were touring Europe for the first two years of their marriage. Nightingale's elder sister had been born in Naples the year before. The Nightingales gave their first born the Greek name for the city, which was Parthenope. William Nightingale had been born with the surname Shore but he had changed it to Nightingale after inheriting from a rich relative, Peter Nightingale of Lea, near Matlock, Derbyshire. The girls grew up in the country spending much of their time at Lea Hurst in Derbyshire. When Nightingale was about five years old her father bought a house called Embley near Romsey in Hampshire. This now meant that the family spent the summer months in Derbyshire, while the rest of the year was spent at Embley. Between these moves there were trips to London, the Isle of Wight, and to relatives.

At that time, Russia was particularly interested, as usual, in warm-water open-water ports. That, combined with the mid-19th century growth of Pan-Slavism, made the lands of the weakening Ottoman Empire, also then known as "the sick man of Europe," an attractive target to Russian imperial expansionists.

On the 150th anniversary of the Charge of the Light Brigade, why should anyone still be interested in what was a relatively minor military blunder in a war long since overshadowed by the slaughter of the First and Second World Wars?
How the charge unfolded in facts, figures and maps
In detail
Thanks in no small part to the lines of Tennyson's poem - "Into the Valley of Death/Rode the six hundred... Cannon to the right of them/ Cannon to the left of them" - the Charge of the Light Brigade has long held its place in the public imagination. It is a symbol of heroic failure, a high-Victorian icon of self-sacrifice and devotion to duty.

I am new to this site, but my previous experiances have led me to believe that in history forums it seems that we historians get far too wrapped up in the 2nd World War, and forget the importance of other influential wars of the not so distant past. I was wondering your takes on the Crimean War. After the Napoleonic war, the Crimean War was the largest conflict in the 19th century. It seems to me that the war began through a series of misconceptions.
What do you think caused it?
Thanks,
-Bryce Apr 11 2005, 08:06 PM pelgus Apr 11 2005, 09:20 PM Apparently it started out as argum over influence in Holy Land, more specifically whether Catholics (France) or Orthodoxs (Russia) should rule the temples in Jerusalem. Which, at the time, was under Turkish control. Being the between the rock and a hard place, and with much more pressing problems, Turkey did not take a position, but French took Jerusalem. Tsar was pissed off, and to save face and restore balance of inluence demanded protectorship over Orthodox population in Turkey (mainly Balkan).
So, to make his point more exact, Tsar send his troops to occupy part of Moldavia. European nations said that it was not good, and Russians were preparing to withdraw, since after all it was just a gesture, anyway, when Turkey declared war. At this point nobody was backing Turkey militarily, but a small Anglo-French naval contingent did reach Constanople quite unknowingly of the unwinding crisis. This violation of the Straits Convention between the major powers (ment also to contain Russian fleet in Black Sea) gave the pretext to Russians to attack and destroy a Turkish flotilla.

Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale is the founder of modern nursing. She transformed nursing into a respectable profession and set the standards for clean, safe hospitals in the world. Florence is honored as the first great nurse of the world. Her picture hangs on the wall in many hospitals. Florence Nightingale was born on May 12, 1820, in Florence, Italy. She was named Florence after her city of birth. Florence's sister was born in Naples and is named Parthenope. Parthenope is the Greek name for Naples. Top of Page Florence's Calling
When Florence was 24 years old, she had a "calling" from God. She wrote in her journal, "God spoke to me and called me to His service." Florence decided her calling was to help the sick and the poor by becoming a nurse.
