Security Personnel
Campus Security officers of Dixie State College are peace officers of the State of Utah and are empowered as Category 1 Certified Officers. It is also a requirement of Dixie State College that all ful-time security personnel be EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certified either at the time of hire or within one year of their hire date.
In accordance with state law, the college security office works closely with local and state law enforcement agencies. The authority of officers of all three agencies may be called upon to assist one another as dictated by manpower needs and, if the occasion arises, where agents see the need for cooperative assistance and information. These may also relate to needs of the Washington County Attorney's Office or the circuit court.

Significant Points
  • Science technicians in production jobs can be employed on day, evening, or night shifts.
  • Many employers prefer applicants who have at least 2 years of specialized training or an associate degree.
  • Job opportunities are expected to be best for graduates of applied science technology programs.
  • Job growth will be concentrated in pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical manufacturing, and biotechnological research and development firms.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Science technicians use the principles and theories of science and mathematics to solve problems in research and development and to help invent and improve products and processes. However, their jobs are more practically oriented than those of scientists. Technicians set up, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments, monitor experiments, make observations, calculate and record results, and often develop conclusions. They must keep detailed logs of all of their work-related activities. Those who work in production monitor manufacturing processes and may be involved in ensuring quality by testing products for proper proportions of ingredients, for purity, or for strength and durability.

Police Union Disputes D.C. Crime Statistics
About 200 Cases Allegedly Set Aside
By Del Quentin Wilber Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, October 4, 2004; Page B02 The D.C. police union has asked the District's inspector general to investigate how the department gathers crime statistics, saying that it has uncovered problems in one of the city's busiest police districts. Union officials said they received a complaint that about 200 crime reports were set aside at the 7th Police District and never counted in crime statistics or were downgraded to lesser offenses. They said they have photocopies of these reports, which allegedly were stashed in a box at the station.
Police chief Charles H. Ramsey and Winston Robinson, above, former commander of the 7th District, say they have confidence in the statistics.

Crime stats reveal few major incidents
Elizabeth Grimsley
News Reporter Though many students may feel uneasy about crime on campus, the most recent campus crime statistics said there were 59 incidents of reported crimes at SIUE last year. The fact is that rates of crime on campus are very low, according to the Student Right to Know Web Site, admin.siue.edu/studentrightto. This site, published each year by the office of risk management by the authority of the vice chancellor of administration, lists statistics about reported incidences since 1990. The latest information was released this week for 1999. Almost all categories indicate fewer than 10 reported cases per year. The one exception to this is burglary from a motor vehicle which occurred 45 times in 1999. "The opportunity for such a crime is greater on a campus like this," Hugh Barlow, chairman of the sociology department, said. He explained that the number of cars on campus at any given time increases the chances for a thief to find one that is unlocked or one that contains something of value. "It would also be easy for someone to get away relatively unnoticed," Barlow said. Given the number of students walking around, it would be easy for someone to blend in and not look suspicious.

Why Statistics? The University of Northern Iowa believes strongly in allowing the community members to make informed decisions about their personal safety. One element is providing the statistical information about crime. Crime statistics take a variety of forms to tell the story of how crime occurs in a community. UNI has placed statistics based on the Federal Campus Crime Report as the basis of our statistics available to the public. The Federally mandated Campus Crime Report allows students to roughly compare between institutions. Annually, the campus crime statistics and policies are distributed in the "College Life: Issues and Answers" made available to all potential students, faculty and staff by the Office of Associate Vice President for Educational and Student Services, 200 Gilchrist Hall, University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, Iowa 50614-0010. General Crime Statistics Resources Campus Security Act The Campus Public Safety policies and statistics are provided in accordance with the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990 ( Clery Act ), required for higher educational institutions receiving Federal Student aid. The University of Northern Iowa publishes and distributes this information yearly, however, we encourage you to call and set up an appointment to speak with our staff. Many times statistics over or understate the actual threats in a community.

Highlights from 20 Years of Surveying Crime Victims
Bureau of Justice Statistics, (NCJ-144525)
  • The steepest declines are in household burglary and theft.
  • Blacks are substantially more likely to be violent crime victims than whites. Handguns are used in about 10% of all violent crimes.
  • Young minority males in central cities are violent crime victims at the highest rates the survey ever reported.
  • Males are much more likely to be victims of violence inflicted by strangers than by family members or other close associates, whereas females are likely to be hurt by family members and close associates as by strangers.
  • 30% of all violent crimes and 25% of home burglaries occur when the victim or victims are away from home on a leisure activity.
  • In approximately half of all female rapes the victim knew the offender. Strangers used some type of weapon in 29% of the offenses, compared to 17% by non stranger rapes.
  • During the last two decades an estimated 37 million victims were injured, and more than 1/3 of those injured had no health insurance or were not eligible for public health benefits.
