Crime Prevention: The anticipation, recognition, and appraisal of crime risk and the initiation of action to remove or reduce it. We anticipate that people will break the law. It is incumbent upon all of us to take preventive measures for preventing crime. Most crime is a crime of opportunity. If you take away the opportunity (close and lock doors and windows, do not leave valuable items in plain view) crime decreases. Our crime prevention programs provide usable information on risk and fear reduction. Prevention also includes addressing community deterioration and changing the environment of the neighborhood to improve the quality of life. Our crime prevention office promotes joint enterprise with private industry and community groups. We recognize the need to form partnerships that will encourage the community to grow and help support our crime prevention programs. Crime prevention acts as a community liaison and conduit for problem solving and prevention. We rely on community involvement. Crime Prevention
Your campus police department works hard to ensure that everyone in the SDSU community is aware of safety issues that may affect them. The Campus Safety Act, also known as the Jeanne Clery Act , requires universities to report annual crime statistics, provide timely warnings of serious crimes when there may be a threat to others, and to keep a public log of campus incidents. SDSU is in full compliance with this federal mandate, and our Safety and Security Report is available to the entire campus community. The Clery Act also requires universities to offer prevention programs to the campus community. Again, SDSU is in full compliance, providing a variety of programs including:
  • the Escort Service (escorts assist 100 persons each evening, from dusk to dawn)
  • Safety programs in the residence halls and at campus orientations
  • RAD courses (Rape Aggression Defense training for women)
  • Security surveys
You are encouraged to make use of these valuable safety precautions. Our Public Safety officers would much rather meet you in one of our prevention programs than take a crime report from you regarding an incident that might have been prevented.

Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch Program is organized to enable the police and the community to work together to make specific geographical areas more crime resistant. It is a citizen involvement, neighborhood and community- based effort, designed to help citizens and the police reduce crime and concerns regarding crime in neighborhoods. One of the most effective ways to promote citizen interaction with police is the sharing of information. Neighborhood groups determine specific needs or problems and then share this information with the police through community meetings, merchant meetings or condo association meetings. The police then act on this information and report back to the group on their progress. An effective Neighborhood Watch requires consistent, independent group participation.
Electronic Neighborhood Watch
Like the traditional Neighborhood Watch Program, the Electronic Neighborhood Watch Program is an innovative supplement that is aimed at reducing crime in the community at the grass roots level. Safety messages will be sent to participating e-mail recipients. Citizens can be alerted to criminal activity in their neighborhoods. Businesses can be notified of scam artists, thieves, and other criminal activity in the area. By being aware of potential crimes and being willing to look out for another’s interests, the police and citizens can collectively combat crime in our community. Simply go to the Village of Homewood’s web site (homesweethomewood.org) to sign-up for the Electronic Neighborhood Watch.

In order for Crime to occur, three elements must be present. These are
  • Desire Ability Opportunity
These elements of crime are usually depicted in a triangle.
As with any triangle, if a single leg is missing, a triangle cannot be formed. This holds true in regard to crime as well. If any one of these is missing, no crime will occur. The main objective of Crime Prevention is to reduce the opportunity for crime, thereby reducing the likelihood that crime will occur. In our " Elements of Crime" Triangle, by removing any one of the legs of the triangle, one removes the crime. One can remove the desire to commit a crime by educating. One can remove the ability to commit a crime by incarcerating, and one can remove the opportunity to commit a crime by target-hardening. Effective Crime Prevention incorporates all of these things.
