Benefits of a Neighborhood Watch Program
  • Neighborhoods working together create a greater sense of security and well-being. Knowing you "Look out for each other" lessens the fear of crime. You become the eyes and ears for the Sheriff's Office.
  • Reduces the risk of being a crime victim. The preventive measures you are taught can substantially decrease the risk of being burglarized, as well as lowering the chance of vandalism, graffiti, and other crimes.
  • You'll learn what to observe and report to your neighbors and to law enforcement. You'll learn what law enforcement needs to know when you report a crime.
  • Knowing your neighbors is an important part of this program. You'll get to know who to contact, be aware of who belongs and who does not, and create a stronger sense of community. It simply comes down to our motto "We look out for each other"!
  • Posting Neighborhood Watch signs on your street and Operation ID stickers on your windows tells criminals your neighborhood is watching. You inform the bad guys that you are not the easy victims and you know what you own and will report any crimes to law enforcement.

Neighborhood Watch Neighborhood Watch was created to obtain citizen involvement in discouraging and preventing residential crime. The program uses citizen involvement to secure their own homes and personal property and to report any suspicious activity to the police. Since its creation in 1972, it has brought a dramatic drop in the local residential crime rate. Neighborhood Crime Facts * Burglary, auto theft, rape, child molestation and arson are the most prevalent neighborhood crimes. * Household burglary is one of the easiest crimes to commit and prevent, but one of the hardest to solve. * A great deal of time is spent on investigating burglaries. * Household burglary is one of the most rapidly increasing major crimes in the nation. * Most home burglars are young amateurs looking for easy targets. * Statistics show that in over one-half of household burglaries, there was not any force involved.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH REGIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM
To encourage neighborhood crime prevention efforts and partnerships, the OAG is hosting regional training sessions for civic leaders, activists, law enforcement personnel and allied professionals. These seminars present community group leaders and others with the opportunity to network and learn from experts in their own "backyard" about new strategies and resources to build stronger communities. The first session was held in Buffalo at the Kleinhan's Music Hall. Attendees heard from speakers addressing the following issues: understanding and combating gang violence including prevention, intervention, and suppression; and, maintaining and strengthening community activism including strategies to engage volunteers and attract support. The second leadership training program was held in Syracuse on June 28, 2005. The program, "

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION:
Neighborhood watch, Block watch, town watchwhatever the title, this initiative is one of the most effective ways to prevent crime, attend to home and personal security, address the safety of our children and the elderly and reduce fear and isolation. Civic involvement, collaborative problem-solving and mutual commitment have helped cities and neighborhoods reduce crime by significant numbers. In early 1972, the National Sheriffs' Association created a model program for today’s neighborhood watch. At that time, the Chiefs were searching for ways to attack the increasing burglary rate across the country. It was recognized that communities able to secure the assistance of their residents in observing, recognizing and reporting suspicious or criminal activities were better able to keep the burglary rate down and reduce other crimes. Today, neighborhood watch is the largest single organized crime prevention project in the nation. We know that neighborhood watch forges strong bonds among residents. Watch groups create a sense of community and pride by forming a unified group of citizens dedicated to improving their neighborhood. Partnering with law enforcement, citizens become their eyes and ears. These groups also serve as an empowering outlet for victims of crime. It helps give victims a greater sense of controlensuring that what happened to them will be less likely to happen to others. A neighborhood watch program can also be a springboard for many other efforts to address the causes of crime, reduce crime and improve neighborhood conditions including youth recreation, child care, economic development, senior citizen activities, affordable housing and community beautification.

Neighborhood Watch Logs View the logs for your area. What is Neighborhood Watch? Neighborhood Watch is a group of neighbors looking out for neighbors. It is getting to know each other and becoming familiar with your neighbor's habits and vehicles so that you will know when something is suspicious or out of the ordinary. In addition to recognizing potential suspicious activities, Neighborhood Watch participants report such activity by calling 911. After calling 911, also notify your Watch Chairperson. All of this doesn't make you a nosy neighbor - it makes you a good neighbor in the old-fashioned sense of the word. Many people don't want to bother the police because they are afraid that it may not be a real emergency or that they may be embarrassed if their suspicions turn out to be unfounded. The police would much rather be called out to investigate than to be called after a crime has been committed. When in doubt, always call 911. The 911 dispatch center is staffed with trained operators who will evaluate your call, rank its priority, and dispatch it to the appropriate officer.

Neighborhood Watch, Block Watch, Town Watch, Crime Watch – whatever the name, it's one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear in your neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch Programs fight the isolation and separation that crime creates and feeds upon. It forges bonds among area residents and businesses, helps reduce burglaries and robberies, and improves relations between police and the communities they serve. Neighborhood Watch Program Neighborhood Watch is the cornerstone of the LAPD's crime prevention strategy. It enlists the active participation of residents, in cooperation with law enforcement, to reduce crime in communities throughout the city. The Neighborhood Watch program was pioneered by the Los Angeles Police Department to educate community residents regarding their roles and responsibilities in the prevention of crime, and to encourage them to take active measures to prevent crime. The program calls upon residents to step forward and assist the police in organizing the community into a cohesive unit working toward the goal of building a safer, crime-free neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch groups discuss neighborhood crime problems with the objective of developing solutions to local problems. Los Angeles Police Officers supply crime information to neighborhood watch organizations and instruct these groups in various crime prevention techniques.

Neighborhood Watch:
A Community Crime Prevention Program AN INTRODUCTION TO NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH Join the Fairfax County Police Department in preventing crime and become a member of our Neighborhood Watch program. When we band together, we can help each other and effectively reduce crime in our neighborhoods. Neighborhood Watch began in 1979 and has flourished steadily with over 900 community programs established throughout the county. The success of the program is due to the cooperative involvement of police and citizens. By donating a small amount of your time to observe and report suspicious activities in your neighborhood, you can be one of thousands of citizens who are contributing to the prevention of crime. The objective of Neighborhood Watch is to organize communities where residents are trained to be alert to potential crimes in their neighborhoods. Citizens are trained to keep watchful eyes on neighbors' homes and be alert to any suspicious or unusual activity that is occurring close to home. Patrol of neighborhoods can be accomplished by citizens-band radio-equipped vehicles or foot patrol. With the quick identification of a potential problem in your area, we can provide a prompt response and the trained personnel to investigate any reported incident or suspicion.

The Neighborhood Watch, Community Action and Problem-Solving Program is one of the most effective means available for resolving issues within your community. It utilizes the best crime prevention device around: a good neighbor . Through organized problem-solving activities, you can help remove crime from your residential area and address any community issue that concerns residents. Neighborhood Watch is not guard duty. It is getting to know your neighbors, focusing on community issues, forming action groups and finding resolutions to neighborhood problems. It’s a partnership between the Office of the Sheriff and the communities we serve. It involves:
    • citizens being trained to recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods and
    • implementation of crime prevention techniques such as home security and Operation Identification (engraving driver’s license or ID number on valuable items).
