Police Dep. CRIME PREVENTION Ask Lenexa Here are general tips for staying safe in a variety of situations, including walking, jogging, shopping, or riding elevators: Stay alert at all times and tuned in to your surroundings, wherever you are. The wearing of headphones while walking or jogging can reduce your level of alertness. Plan your route in advance, and vary your routes whenever possible. Get to know the neighborhoods and neighbors where you live and work. Find out what stores and restaurants are open late and where police and fire stations are located. When walking or jogging, use busy streets, and avoid shortcuts through deserted parks, vacant lots, and unlit passages. At night, walk or jog only on streets with plenty of light and traffic, and avoid walking alone if possible. Walk on the part of the sidewalk close to the street and away from shrubbery, trees, or doorways. On less busy streets at night, it is sometimes safer to walk in the street rather than on the sidewalk. * Stand tall and walk confidently. Don't make it obvious if you are in unfamiliar territory. Trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable in a place or situation, leave right away and get help if necessary.

General Tips on Crime Prevention
Prevent Theft
You can make a thief's job significantly more difficult by obeying these guidelines:
  • Lock your bike where there's heavy foot traffic. Always use a kryptonite-type lock. If you set down your purse or backpack, know where it is at all times. Never leave your belongings unattended.

Prevent Burglary
  • Always keep the door to your apartment or dorm room locked. Dead bolts and other such safety lock devices provide added protection. Never let strangers inside your home. Do not leave spare keys under the doormat or in other obvious hiding places. Inscribe items of value with your driver's license number.

Car Safety
  • Park in well-lit areas close to foot traffic. Lock all doors and roll up windows when exiting your car and again after you enter your car. Never leave valuables in plain sight. Have your keys in hand when returning to your car at night and walk with someone if possible. If car jacked, surrender your vehicle immediately.

Appointments Include Director of Newly Created Office of Victims' Services April 27, 1999
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Sacramento) Attorney General Bill Lockyer today announced the appointments of Kathy Jett as Director of the Crime and Violence Prevention Center and Nina Salarno as Director of the newly created Office of Victims' Services in the California Department of Justice.
"California has been a leader for the country in the development of tough sentencing laws like 3-Strikes and mandatory life-terms for illegal use of guns," Lockyer said. "But in order to improve public safety we need to pay as much attention to prevention as we have to detention. Kathy Jett and Nina Salarno will help make California a leader in the fight to prevent more crimes and improve services to victims."
As director of the Crime and Violence Prevention Center (CVPC), Jett will oversee a staff of 27 and be responsible for developing effective crime prevention and education strategies for law enforcement and the public. She brings to the job more than 20 years of experience as a passionate advocate and recognized leader in crime and violence prevention, the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse and developing improved health care services for women.
Since 1997, Jett has served as Chief of the Office of Women's Health in the California Department of Health Services. She earlier was a Crime Prevention Adviser within the Attorney General's CVPC and managed the state's drug prevention services program within the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT CRIME PREVENTION INITIATIVES
Welcome to the Australian Government's crime prevention and community safety website. Crime and the fear of crime consistently rate amongst the highest concerns of the Australian public. The Australian Institute of Criminology has estimated that crime costs Australia around $32 billion per year. The Australian Government shares the community's concern about crime and violence and their impact on people's lives. Although the States and Territories have primary responsibility for the criminal justice system, since 1996 the Australian Government has undertaken a range of substantial initiatives aimed at reducing the incidence of violence and other crime in Australia. This website outlines some of the Australian Government's major initiatives in this area.
