How to spend one day in Heraklion
You have a day or two to spend in Heraklion, the main city and key business centre of Crete. The city is also a major cruise destination. Beyond the crazed progress of moped riders, noisy scooters and a battered, out-of-control look to the city, there is much to do and plenty of things worth seeing. Apart from shopping and the designer clothes on Daedalou Street ("DaydAloo"), there are many small shops off all the main streets which sell those local products which normally are used when you live in Crete. Just have a look along 1866 Street and more so its side streets - you may find a curio distinctly different from more typical "gifts" offered to visitors in gift shops.
The famous tourist attraction, the Saturday market that was by the port, an almost kilometre long display of fruit and vegetables and sundry items - has now sadly moved to an obscure suburb. See in our blog: Saturday market in Heraklion: moved!

Apart from museums and galleries I cannot keep a regular update of events. Unfortunately, the sites that have taken on this task such as the site of the Municipality of Chania don't seem to bother with updates so you will have to find out once you are in Crete by asking around. Museums are the main repositories of culture in Crete and where most visitors head for when wanting a little bit of culture, if only because it is easier to find them than other cultural events and exhibitions. Galleries there are a few galleries in Chania listed below
  • Tzamia Kristalla - Skalidi Street - private gallery with exhibitions by Greek artists Milonogianni - Trikoupi Street - private gallery with exhibitions by Greek artists Omma - El. Venizelos Street- private gallery with exhibitions by Greek and foreign artists Pinakothiki - Halidon Street - municipal gallery with a set exhibition of paintings as well as special exhibitions Giali Tsamii - the mosque on Chania harbour sporadically hosts exhibitions Mediterranean Institute of Architecture on the harbour front is a new exhibition space with occasional exhibitions
Artists (please email if you want to be listed) Cultural events the site of the Municipality of Chania lists cultural events, even has a search page, but the updates seem very rare making the page virtually useless.

An island of southeast Greece in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Its Minoan civilization, centered at the city of Knossos on the northern coast, was one of the earliest in the world and reached the height of its wealth and power c. 1600 B.C. Crete subsequently fell to the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. The islanders proclaimed their union with modern Greece in 1908. CHAPTER V
Crete as the Lost Atlantis
p. 98 [paragraph continues] Schliemann gave serious consideration to these clues, and had endeavoured, as has been stated, to make arrangements to excavate at Knossos. He also conducted researches with Virchow at Sais, in northern Egypt, but no discovery was made to indicate that pre-Hellenic civilization had emanated from the land of the Pharaohs in its fully-developed form. The larger problem appears to have engaged his mind: Where did Egyptian civilization originate? Ere he died Schliemann formulated a bold theory to account not only for early northern European and North African civilization but also that of Central America as well. It was based on Plato's myth of the Lost Atlantis. He was convinced that this great island had had real existence, and that colonies of its inhabitants settled in Mexico, Egypt, and Greece at a remote period, introducing into these countries a full-blown culture. Here, again, as will be shown, Schliemann had intuitive perception of a basis of fact embedded in the debris of tradition. Had he lived long enough he would no doubt have adjusted his view in the light of those discoveries which have been made during recent years, and accepted Crete as the mysterious island referred to by Plato. NOTE: Schliemann's Atlantis bequest was a hoax, created for a Hearst newspaper. For more information, refer to

Thousands of people flock to Crete each year to hike the Samaria Gorge. Then they head to the tourist taverns that usually pump out souflaki and frozen chips instead of wonderful, local fresh food. Crete has three major mountain ranges, 3,000 caves, dozens of secluded gorges and hundreds of miles of coastline to explore.

Description
About the Editors "This marvelous and uniquely comprehensive book sets a new, high standard of excellence in the study of Greek archaeology."Ronald S. Stroud, University of California, Berkeley DESCRIPTION (back to top) This book marks an astonishing achievement in ancient Greek archaeology. Using twin cameras suspended from a 33-foot, four-finned balloon, Wilson and Ellie Myers have been able to photograph 44 archaeological sites on Crete from a much lower altitude than is possible from helicopters or airplanes. The result is stunning. The breathtaking high-resolution photographs reveal new information and correct mistaken assumptions about these ancient sites. The Atlas will cause scholars to rethink their notions about the Minoan culture of Crete, which with its linear A writing, widespread sea trade, elaborate palaces, and unique art was crucial to the development of western civilization. For archaeologists of the future, the

Introduction to Crete
Overview of the Region
Crete is located to the southern end of Europe, it is the closest European Region to the equator and almost equidistant from mainland Europe (110 km), Asia (175 km) and Africa (300 km). These geographic characteristics of the island provide Crete with a unique chance to play a key role in the international scene.
Crete is Greece’s largest island and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean basin. It covers an area of 8.336 square km, which is 6.3% of the total area of Greece. It’s population of 603.000 houses 5,5 % of the country’s people. Crete is the 13th Region of Greece and is divided into four regional councils. The two biggest cities of Crete, Heraklion and Chania , are also the two main gateways for people and trade.
The terrain of the land stamps from mountainy capacities with trace about the 50% of the total area and create inter-se fertile flats area (22.5 % of the total). However Crete has important more than the average of the country agricultural land (37.8%) and rangelands (53.1%) but a few forest .The greater part of the agricultural land is situated to the prefecture of Heraklion (44%) and the least to the prefecture of Chania (17%), which however is the second extension (28,5 % of the total land). The water potential of the Region is limited and it is of unequal parts allotted. The role of Crete in the Eastern Mediterranean was particularly important in ancient times. Lying at the crossroads of three continents and many routes, it was a meeting point for different peoples, a melting pot over the centuries, for the most ancient and diverse civilisations from East and West. A Greek land, a unique amalgam of elements derived from the creative assimilation of multifarious cultural forms. A junction of the roads of civilisation, the roads followed by conquerors, merchants and travellers, the road of collision and synthesis which marked Crete’s long history and spurred the development of Europe’s oldest civilisation.
