The Greek island of Crete
In a varied but wonderful climate, the bridge between Europe and Africa, the crossroads of three continents, has kept inside green forests and steep gorges all that nature has to offer. This island, the largest of Greece, is a place with tall mountains, fertile valleys and clean beaches.
Crete offers many surprises in its changing nature...forests of palm trees meet tall mountains, then majestic plateaus and then the sea. But it is a sea you have never seen before. Because this one will make you feel you are a part of its hidden world, the beaches will place you on gentle waves that carry elements of ancient cultures from distant places. And then you can visit the famous gorges and the deep forests with the living wild life.
Crete also carries a long history that goes back to the 7th millennium BC. It is the island that brought us the Minoan civilization with buildings of perfect architecture, and where later came the religious Byzantium years from which many monasteries are still preserved today. Crete also cultivated a rich culture that offered us El Greco and Nikos Kazantzakis, that developed unique customs, dances and music visible even in the present modernized life.
A big part of what makes Crete a very special place is its people. The proud men and women of Crete, the hospitable locals that under romantic nights will welcome you inside a little cafe or an ouzery of a picturesque village and offer you Greek coffee or tsikoudia with meze (raki with spicy snacks).

Minoan Culture
Many authors have commented on the imagery of nature in Minoan Art. Jane Ellen Harrison has related this observation to the goal of primitive religion which is the conservation and promotion of life. This goal is served by getting rid of whatever is conceived to be hostile and enhancing whatever is conceived as favorable to life. The primary action taken are mimetic dances. In this way the primitive person tries to get what he wants by doing it. The dances are generally of two sorts. One looks back to the ancestors and re-enacts their doings. The dances reinforce the tradition of the group. The other looks forward and attempts to simulate what is desired to sustain life. Another aspect of the art of the Minoans is the representation of dancing. So important is this expression that some have said that most of the time of the Minoans must have been spent in dancing processions. Every young male needs to be initiated perhaps but there is a question whether every male can serve in the fertility capacity. Likewise with the women. The best needs to be chosen. Minoan art focuses on the initiation of the chosen woman. Greek myth provides a number of mechainisms of choice. Sometimes inheritance is used, but also a footrace, or a beauty contest. Sometimes Aphrodite arranges for love to provide the match.

Introduction to Crete
Few travelers need to be sold on the glories of the Minoan culture of Crete. But how many know that Crete also offers visitors cities with layers of at least 4,000 years of continuous inhabitation, including the vibrant heritage of centuries of Orthodox Christianity and the distinctive imprint left by almost 700 years of Venetian and Turkish rule? Not to mention endless beaches and magnificent mountains, intriguing caves and resonant gorges, and countless villages and sites that provide unexpected and unforgettable experiences. Per square mile, Crete must be one of the most "loaded" places in the world loaded, that is, in the diversity of history, archaeological sites, natural attractions, tourist amenities, and more. In a world where increasing numbers of travelers have "been there, done that," Crete remains an endlessly fascinating and satisfying destination. An elaborate service industry has grown up to please the thousands of foreigners who visit Crete each year. There are facilities now for everyone's taste, ranging from luxury resorts to guest rooms in villages that have hardly changed over several centuries. You can spend a delightful day in a remote mountain environment where you're treated to fresh goat cheese and olives; then be back at your hotel within an hour, lying on the beach and enjoying a cool drink.

We Cretans, are permanently in love with our island and what it stands for. This very special spirit transcends the limits of culture; we have learnt to distinguish it in all aspects of our life. It runs through "rizitika" folk songs and "

http://www.africawithin.com/black_history/overview_chapter8.htm
An Overview of Black History
Crete and Phoenicia
The ancient Crete civilization has been referred to as the Minoan culture, named after King Minos. The ancestors of the Cretans were natives of Africa, a colony of western Ethiopians, who dwelt in the grasslands of North Africa before that area became a desert. As the Sahara expanded, these Africans took to the sea, and in Crete and the neighboring islands, set up maritime culture. By 1700 B.C., this civilization had reached its peak. The Sea Kings of Crete at Knossus ruled over the region that became the cultural center of the eastern Mediterranean. The Palace of Minos contained a throne room, a chapel, storerooms, and bathrooms with terra cotta bathtubs, fitted with drains quite modern in construction. They were made of faucet-joined pipes superior to any known to the later Romans and unequaled until the nineteenth century. The Minoan palace royalty was but a replica of Egyptian royalty, and the very name of Minos seem to be only a slight alteration of the name of the first Egyptian Pharaoh, Aha Mena or Menes. In 1420 B.C., the eruption of the volcano on the Santorini Island had a catastrophic effect on the people of Crete. All the Islands in the sea of Aegea and Crete were covered with a layer of volcanic dust ten centimeters thick. A cloud covered the area for several days and the tidal wave (tsunami) destroyed the entire coastline. The cities of Cnossus, Mallia, Hagia, Amonisos, Gournia, and Triada were destroyed. The gas fumes poisoned the population, causing illnesses such as bronchitis and digestive disorders.
