Crete: Portrait of a Changing Culture
October 12, 2001 - March 31, 2002 Crete: Portrait of a Changing Culture is a black and white photographic and oral narrative series produced during Nancy Backas' recent travels to the Greek Island of Crete. Backas, a native Illinois artist, began studying photography in college, and has seriously pursued this art form for the past six years. This interest, in addition to her twenty-years of experience as a writer, editor and researcher, have gracefully converged into this artistic undertaking. In this exhibition, Nancy Backas passionately explores the spirit of life on the Greek Island of Crete. She examines the ways in which the distant Minoan past is reflected in the simple life here. Yet, this is approached with an awareness of how, as a result of entry into the European Union, this way of life is changing and possibly vanishing. Her photographs, as well as her accompanying personal narratives, tell the story of this shifting culture. Crete

The rich history of Crete has left the island strewn with hundreds of archaeological sites, large and small. The island reached its zenith during prehistoric times when the Minoan civilization dominated the Aegean and produced a fascinating culture which in turn has left behind a plethora of beautiful art and architecture. Once the Minoan culture fell into decline, the Mycenaean powers of mainland Greece controlled the island, and later the Greeks during the Classical and Hellenistic eras. In turn, the Romans established their authority and ruled Crete

http://www.levity.com/mavericks/minoan.htm
Minoan Culture , Bronze Age culture that developed on the island of Crete prior to the coming of the Greeks. It is one of three principal cultures of Aegean civilization; the other two are the Cycladic culture, which developed in the Cyclades, and the Mycenaean, which developed on mainland Greece in late Helladic times. Minoan culture reached its height in the 2nd millennium BC at Knossos, Phaestos, Mallia, and other flourishing centers. The kings of Knossos attained their greatest power about 1600 BC, when they controlled the entire Aegean area and traded extensively with Egypt. The destruction of Knossos and the collapse of Minoan culture coincided with the beginning of the most flourishing period of Mycenaean civilization in Greece; this coincidence suggests that the warlike Mycenaeans attacked and destroyed the Minoan civilization. Excavations on Crete after 1900 revealed some 3000 clay tablets inscribed with two scripts, called Linear A and Linear B. The earlier of the two, employed by the Minoans, was Linear A and it was already flourishing about 1750 BC; it has not been deciphered. Minoans also added inked Linear A inscriptions to stone and terra-cotta vessels. A unique clay disk found at the site of Phaestos is often adduced as the earliest example of printing—that is, reproducing written text by using "letter" stamps; the disk was stamped on both sides, while still wet, with a series of sealstones comprising a set of 45 symbols. Linear B tablets were found on Crete and also at Pylos and Mycenae on the Greek mainland; the majority of tablets are dated between 1400 BC and 1150 BC. In 1952 the British architect and cryptographer Michael Ventris and John Chadwick deciphered Linear B and identified the language it transcribes as an early Greek dialect.

Picture Galleries Accommodations About us ... What's New?
Culture of Crete
We, Cretans, are permanently in love with our island and what it stands for. We are in love with its spirit which evolved from vivacious Minoan times through perpetual and eventful contacts with different races and civilizations, the Dorians, the Egyptians, the Byzantines, the Arabs, the Venetians, the Turks... This very special spirit transcends the limits of culture; we have learnt to distinguish it in all aspects of our life. It runs through the "rizitika" folk songs; it resides in plant motifs of ancient earthenware; it characterizes the way a shepherd drives its flock of sheep to the slopes of the Sfakian mountains; it is diffused in the aroma of "diktamos" herb and adds fire to the eyes of a solitary priest saying mass at a small country church, a handgun passed in it's belt...
FAMOUS CRETANS
NIKOLAOS KAZANTZAKIS One of the most significant Greek novelists, poets, drama writers and scholars. He was born in Heraklio, in 1833 and studied Law in Athens and Philosophy in Paris. He was influenced by the theories of Ion Dragoumis and Eleftherios Venizelos. His trip to Russia in 1919, acting as General Manager of the Ministry of Welfare, was the introduction of his exciting odyssey: Vienna, Berlin, Italy, Crete, Russia, Cyprus, Spain, Egypt, mount Sinah, Goethesgub (Tsechoslovakia), Nice (France). He died in Germany, in 1957. His first novel was "The Snake and the Lilly", in 1906, followed by "Foreman", "Ascetic Life", the translation of Dante's "Divina Comedy". His prime was evident by the works "Life of Alexis Zorbas", "Christ is crossed again", "Captain Michael", "The Last Temptation", "God's Poor Man" and "Reference to Greco".

The History of Plumbing - CRETE
A cross the Mediterranean Sea from Mesopotamia, the ancient people of Crete and their Minoan sea-kings were leaving their mark on the early annals of history. Between 3000-1500 B.C., their early plumbers had laid elaborate systems of sewage disposal and drainage that resemble one of today. In fact, archaeologists have discovered underground channels that remained virtually unchanged for several centuries, except for extensions to include structures built over the original ones. Some vestiges of the pipes still carry off the heavy rains. Unlike hot and dry Mesopotamia, Crete suffered from extremes of variable climate and geography. Some say those forces provided the catalyst to design systems for the inhabitants' comfort. Likewise, the sharp and jagged slopes of the country provided an early understanding into the principles of hydraulics.
